Preamble The church of the Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest

institution that the world has ever known. Christ established it during his personal ministry, and he is its Head (Matt. 16:18; Eph. 5:23; Col. 1:18). He promised that he would be with it through the ages and that the gates of hell should not prevail against it (Matt. 16:18; 28:20). To it he gave the Great Commission and the ordinances, and for it he went to the cross (Matt. 28:19-20; I Cor. 11:23-26; Eph. 5:25). He loved the church, and he wants his churches to honor and glorify him as his representatives on the earth (Eph. 3:21; 5:25-27).

The Lord’s church has the greatest task ever assigned to

any individual or group in the world’s history—carrying the glorious gospel of Christ the Savior to every nation and tongue. No other commission like that has ever been given or will ever be given. In carrying out this work, the churches have done more for the world than all the governments ever organized, all the other institutions ever established, or all the armies ever assembled. World history has been changed by the work of Christ through his churches.

We see then that we have a great privilege in being

members of the Holy Temple. It is much more important to be a Christian, to know Christ as personal Savior, than to be a member of a particular church. However, it is also important to be baptized and be a member of a church that closely follows Biblical teachings.

Membership also brings us great opportunities. These

include opportunity to fellowship in the finest company that can

be found, opportunity for Christian growth, and training through the various departments of the church. We have opportunity for Christian service through the church in the name of Christ to those at home and around the globe. Where else can we find such opportunities to live for God and our fellow men?

Membership places upon us an inescapable obligation—

an obligation to make the church and its work first in our lives. It is an obligation to use our time and our talents for the glory of God, an obligation to support the work with our presence4, our influence, and our means. Churches are never stronger than their membership; and there is no strong church without strong and committed members. There is need for every member to be consecrated, trained, and enlisted in active service. We are under obligation to be the very best members possible under the leading of the Lord.

We see then that membership is a privilege and an

opportunity that entails great obligations.

Our Church Christ established his church during his personal

ministry here on the earth. This is one of the things which he definitely said he would do: “Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18). Before Christ left the earth, he stated that the work he had come to do was finished (John 17:4; 19:30). The first members were the apostles (I Cor. 12:28). Jesus took these men, who had been baptized by John the Baptist, and formed them into his church. Before he left the earth, this church had a membership of about 120 (Acts 1:15), an organization, the ordinances, a commission, and a treasurer. On Pentecost the three thousand saved and baptized were “added” to the church, which was already in existence. This church was a local, visible body. 1 Cor. 3:16 Paul says “Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” We believe that we are the church that the Lord Jesus had built by His own blood. We do not give the title “founder of the church” to any man, although God used Dr. Jean-Gerard Delinois to start this ministry on January 7, 2007 in this great city of Wilmington, Delaware. However, no man can ever hold the title of founder of any church or ministry. For that reason we do not support any ministries that carry its leader’s name.

Our Church governs itself with accountability only to

the Lord (Acts 6:1-7, 15:1-35), i.e. it makes decisions and conducts business without control of any ruling person or denominational group.

Dear friend in Christ,You have been born again at the Holy Temple of God in

Christ. I praise the Lord for you. I also want to lift you up to the Almighty in prayer.

God loves you. He knows everything about you. The Bible says that there is joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth. Through His Son, He has made you a child and joint-heir of His riches. And like a good father, He takes great care of His children: He protects, comforts, provides, teaches, nurtures, guides, loves, and desires your good. God is your Father!

Because Jesus has paid the debt for your sin, you are now free to worship God and to get to know Him. If you want Him to, He will do the impossible in your life. The Christian life is not complicated at all when it is lived as found in the Bible which is God's holy word. Don't be mistaken, this is not the easy life, but it is one filled with joy and peace that comes from Almighty God Himself.

What is a Christian? Webster’s Dictionary defines a Christian as “a person

professing belief in Jesus as the Christ or in the religion based on the teaching of Jesus.” While this is a good starting point in understanding what a Christian is, like many secular definitions, it falls somewhat short of really communicating the biblical truth of what it means to be a Christian.

The word Christian is used three times in New

Testament (Acts 11:26; Acts 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16). Followers of Jesus Christ were first called “Christians” in Antioch (Acts 11:26) because their behavior, activity, and speech were like Christ. It was originally used by the unsaved people of Antioch as a kind of contemptuous nickname used to make fun of the Christians. It literally means, “Belonging to the party of Christ” or an “adherent or follower of Christ,” which is very similar to the way Webster’s Dictionary defines it.

Unfortunately over time, the word "Christian" has lost a

great deal of its significance and is often used of someone who is religious or has high moral values instead of a true born again follower of Jesus Christ. Many people who don’t believe and trust in Jesus Christ consider themselves Christians simply

Holy Temple of God in Christ Page 11

because they go to church or they live in a "Christian" nation. But going to church, serving those less fortunate than you, or being a good person does not make you a Christian. As one evangelist once said, “Going to church doesn’t make one a Christian anymore than going to a garage makes one an automobile.” Being a member of a church, attending services regularly, and giving to the work of the church cannot make you a Christian.

The Bible teaches us that the good works we do cannot

make us acceptable to God. Titus 3:5 tells us that it is “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.” So, a Christian is someone who has been born-again by God (John 3:3; John 3:7; 1 Peter 1:23) and has put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8 tells us that it is “by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” A true Christian is someone who has repented of his or her sin and put faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone. Their trust is not in following a religion or a set of moral codes, or a list of do’s and don’ts.

A true Christian is a person who has put his or her faith and trust in the person of Jesus Christ and fact that He died on the cross as payment for sins and rose again on the third day to obtain victory over death and to give eternal life to all who believe in Him. John 1:12 tells us: “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” A true Christian is indeed a child of God, a part of God’s true family, and one who has been given new life in Christ. The mark of a true Christian is love for others and obedience to God’s Word (1 John 2:4; 1 John 2:10).

You have a new life. Salvation from your past sins offers you a new lease on

life. "Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life" (Romans 6:3-4). Your old past life of living in sin for self, the flesh, the devil and the world is left behind in baptism's watery grave. Jesus died as a substitute for our sins on the cross. We die to the love and habitual practice of sin. Such is what got us into so much trouble and turmoil in the first place! Someone said, "What we once feared to give up is now a joy to surrender." Christ was raised up to a new resurrected life. We are raised up to a new life to glorify God. We're raised up "to walk two inches off the ground" in a spiritually transformed life. A faith that has not changed your life has not saved your soul. "You are converted to a new life when you changed from wanting what you want for yourself to wanting what God wants from yourself" This is how God designed the new life for us.

You are a new person. We become a new and better person by following the

Son of God. "We all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord" (2 Corinthians 3:18). If you lovingly look at the life of Christ in the gospel accounts, you cannot help but become a new and better person in every way. We become what we think about most. Jesus lived the greatest life ever lived. He is the

model of a true human being. With Christ, you are not just a human being -- you are a human becoming! He will change you from the inside out. It's told a socialist once said in a speech, "Socialism will put a new coat on a man." A person in the audience, recently born anew, shouted: "But Jesus Christ will put a new man in that coat!" The Lord of glory alone has the power to help change us into a new person.

You have a new purpose.Instead of getting caught up in the rat race of life, you

have can have new motivation. "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in Go" (Colossians 3:1-3). A new, spiritual attitude makes life worth living. We have a fresh perspective and see everyday things in light of eternity. Everything physical will one day burn up (2 Peter 3:10-12). We can say in the face of life's daily problems, "This too shall pass." In light of our new spiritual focus, our trials shrink to their true size. Living a Christ-centered life, we have new resources to deal with difficulties. The Lord is greater than any problem that we have.

Our new "citizenship is in heaven" (Philippians 3:20).

We are just passing through this old world below. "Everything that is not connected with eternity is eternally out of date" (C.S. Lewis). The spiritual is more enduring and satisfying than the material. In Christ's will, we find our greatest peace and highest happiness. Our life can count for something in the overall scheme of things. This world is the classroom of eternity. God put us here for the purpose of our moral development.

In this new start in the kingdom of new beginnings, we

know our work for Christ is imprinted with eternal

consequences. Many in the world do not grieve so much that they must one day die but that they never really knew why they were born. In Christ, we have a new start and a reason for getting out of bed in the morning. To believe in heaven is not running away from life. It is running to a reference point that here gives all of life meaning.

You have a new hope. You can have a new hope of a happy life beyond the

grave. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you" (1 Peter 1:3-5). We all came from somewhere and we are going somewhere. Heaven will ever be new. Death and decay cannot effect it. "He who sat on the throne said, `Behold, I make all things new'" (Revelation 21:5).

You have a new family. The Lord has given us fellow Christians as our new

spiritual family. "Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart" (1 Peter 1:22). There is a congregation of the Lord's people nearby. They, like you, yearned for a new start and found it in the gospel. They are part of this kingdom of new beginnings. We realize that none of us come from a spiritually perfect background. By a common obedience to the gospel of Christ, we are a new family of spiritual brothers and sisters. We need each other's love, understanding and support. We have banded together as a local

church of Christ. We enjoy revitalizing worship, patterned after the original simplicity and beauty of New Testament worship. Our new mission is to do the Lord's work in the Lord's way.

You don't have to get a new social security number to get a new identity. In a right relationship with Christ, you have the opportunity to start life anew. This new start can transform and guide your life.

Remember that you walk simultaneously in the realm of the spiritual and the temporal. You are in the presence and care of God whether you are cooking dinner or sitting in a church pew. Whether you are praying or washing your car. Being a Christian is a lifestyle that affects every area of your life. If you walk with God (do things His way), you will be blessed. Jesus said: “Whosoever loveth me keepeth my commandments." If you are a serious disciple of Jesus Christ, you will do His will. Here are some things that you must do to live victoriously in Jesus.

Read the Bible every day. The Bible is God's word. This is how He talks to you. It

is like no other book in the entire world--it is living. Pray before you pick it up. Some of you may not know how to pray. It is simply talking to God. Make sure you close your prayer "In Jesus Name" which Jesus told us to do.

You may not understand everything that you read the first time. The Holy Spirit will help you to understand what you need to know.

Start with the book of John which is the fourth book of the New Testament. If you get sleepy when you begin to read the Bible, continue anyway! The demons that had control over

you before you trusted Jesus don't want you to read the Bible--it is dangerous to them. Reading the Bible will change your life--it certainly changed mine. The Holy Spirit will teach you how to overcome temptation, gain wisdom, trust God, know His will, have peace regardless of your circumstances, and so much more.

Come to worship service, bible study and get baptized and get involved in your church ministries – you are saved to serve.

When you get baptized you are, 1) identifying with the death, burial and resurrection of

Jesus Christ 2) making a public profession of your belief in Jesus 3) showing the washing away of sins. Water baptism does not save you, but it is NOT an

option--Jesus commanded that we do it. It is one of your first steps of obedience in a life of obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Talk to God in prayer every day. Prayer is just talking to God about whatever is on your heart. Some of the things you can do in prayer: praise God's Holy Name for His goodness, thank Him for your daily provision, tell Him your concerns and problems, pray for others (your enemies, friends, associates and relatives), pray for yourself, pray for the government. This list is by no means exhaustive. As you read the Bible, you will find that your prayers will mature because you'll know the will of the Lord and His ways.

Tell someone about your decision to trust in Jesus Christ. Tell other people about Jesus. Forgive your enemies and anyone that you are embittered against. Bitterness in your heart can hinder your walk with Jesus. We are to love everyone, even our enemies (Matt 5:44). Don't forget, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." It is not our responsibility to take

revenge on anybody. God judges rightly and He will handle any wrongs perpetrated against us, we're His children. Love God supremely and love your neighbor (everybody you meet) as yourself.

NOTE: New Christians oftentimes experience spiritual attacks. You may experience more temptations and problems than usual, but do not be discouraged and do not let these things take your eyes off of the Lord. Do not be surprised if your tire blows out or someone gets mad at you for no apparent reason. Pray, read the Bible, trust in God and don't argue. Watch God work in your life.

What Actually Happened the Moment I Trusted

Christ?  Titus 3:5, 6 "He saved us, not on the basis of deeds

which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior." 1. I was received by a person (John 6:37). 2. I became accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6). 3. I received a person (Colossians 2:6). 4. I received the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). 5. I was incorporated into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). 6. I was born from above (Titus 3:6-7). 7. I became a child of God (John 1:12). 8. I became a partaker of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). 9. I became an heir of God (Romans 8:17). 10.I received an eternal inheritance (Colossians 1:12).

11. I received pardon (Ephesians 1:7). 12. I was justified in His sight (Romans 5:1). 13. I am accounted righteous before God (Romans 5:19). 14. I became free from condemnation (Romans 8:1). 15. I became a saint in Christ (Romans 1:7). 16. I received eternal life (1 John 5:11-12). 17. I became reconciled to God (Romans 5:11). 18. I became free from fear of death (Romans 8:2). 19. I was delivered from the law (Romans 7:6). 20. I became a spiritual priest (Revelation 1:6).

It is my hope that through a closer examination of each

of these truths we will be encouraged in our faith and gain a deeper understanding of the impact and wonder of being saved. May the Lord grant us a fuller and better understanding of the deep things that are true about being a child of God.

Statement of FaithWe believe the Bible to be the divinely inspired and

authoritative Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

We believe in one God, eternal, infinite, perfect, creator and sustainer of the universe.

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His atoning death through his shed blood, his bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father and his personal return in power and glory.

We believe the Church, the Body of Christ, consists of all believers and exists to fulfill Christ’s mission, making disciples of all nations and bringing healing and justice to human society, all to the glory of God.

We believe in the resurrection of the body, the everlasting punishment of unbelievers and the everlasting blessedness of believers in the presence of Christ.

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, with equality across racial, gender and class differences.

We believe in the Blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church of God, which is in Christ at His return.

We believe that regeneration by the Holy Ghost is absolutely essential for personal salvation.

We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross provides healing for the human body in answer to believing in prayer.

We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a Holy and separated life in this present world, Amen.

We believe that those who have trusted Christ as personal Savior can never lose their salvation, but are eternally secure in God’s care (John 3:16, John 5:24, Romans 8:38-39, I John 5:10-13).

Mission StatementThe mission of Holy Temple of God in Christ is to

Honor and glorify God. To proclaim the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in word and in deeds by cultivating a personal and passionate relationship with our Lord and helping others with compassion.

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28: 19-20

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”

Ephesians 4:11-13

glorified.

MissionBeing sent and sending individuals to serve and share

the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout every part of the world.Service Serving the saved, unsaved, hurting, and broken.

(Ministry) Basis Duties 1 – Duties to our GodEccl 12:13-14 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole

matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. (14) For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (KJV)

To fear God and keep His commandments is the duty of every living human being that has walked on planet earth. Moses also understood this basic two-fold spiritual principle.

Deut 10:12-13 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, (13) To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good? (KJV)

Moses understood that God’s basic human requirements are to fear the Lord God and love Him, and to keep His commandments. Notice the similarity between the exhortation of Moses with the teachings of Jesus.

Matt 22:37-40 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with

all thy mind. (38) This is the first and great commandment. (39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (KJV)

Jesus also presented the duty of man as a two-fold process of loving God and our neighbors. According to Jesus all the commandments found in the law and prophets find their root in these two spiritual principles. From the writings of the Old Testament to the teachings of Jesus the duty of man has not changed we must fear God and love Him, and keep his commandments. Now lets correlate these three variations of the same two-fold duty of man.

2 – Duties to the ChurchTo walk together in Christian love (John 13:34-35). To strive for the advancement of the Church and

promote its prosperity and spirituality (Phil. 1:27; II Tim. 2:15; II Cor. 7:1; II Peter 3:11).

To sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrine (Heb. 10:25; Matt. 28:19; I Cor. 11:23-26; Jude 3).

To give it pre-eminence in my life (Matt. 6:33). To contribute cheerfully and regularly (I Cor. 16:2; II

Cor. 8:6-7). To carry my membership when I move and be active in

Church work wherever I live (Acts 11:19-21; 18:24-28).  3 – Duties in Personal Christian LivingTo maintain family and secret devotions (I Thess. 5:17-

18; Acts 17:11). To religiously educate the children (II Tim. 3:15; Deut.

6:4-7).

To seek the salvation of the lost (Acts 1:8; Matt. 4:19; Psalm 126:5-6; Prov. 11:30).

To walk circumspectly in the world, and to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment (Eph. 5:15; Phil. 2:14-15; I Peter 2:11-12).

To avoid gossip and excessive anger (Eph. 4:31; I Peter 2:21; Col. 3:8; James 3:1-2).

To abstain from sale or use of liquors (Eph. 5:18; Hab. 2:15).

To be zealous in our efforts for Christ (Titus 2:14). 4 – Duties to Fellow MembersTo watch over one another in love (I Peter 1:22). To pray for one another (James 5:16). To aid in sickness and distress (Gal. 6:2; Ja 2:14-17). To cultivate sympathy and courtesy (I Peter 3:8). To be slow to take offense, always ready for

reconciliation (Eph. 4:30-32). 5- Duties to SocietyIn an increasingly secular and ungodly culture, many

Christians wonder about their role and duty. Should we lobby for rights that have traditionally belonged to us? Should we make every effort to implement a Christian agenda? Should we completely reform the government? The Bible speaks clearly about our duties and it's all about governing our character.

Submission and Obedience Remind them to be subject

to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be uncontentious, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. (Titus1. 1-2) We as Christians have obligations to a pagan society as well. When you live as God wants you to in an unbelieving culture, the

Holy Temple of God in Christ Page 25

Member’s Manual

Holy Spirit uses your life to draw the sinner by softening his attitude toward God (cf. 1 Peter 2:12). Submission to government and obedience to all human authority. Believers are not exempt from following civil laws and directives, unless such orders contradict the Word and will of God (see Acts 4:18-20; 5:40-42).

Readiness for Good WorksOur duty toward society is to have a readiness "for every

good deed." Here the apostle Paul is not referring to some minimal, reluctant adherence to doing what we already know is right, but to a sincere willingness and heart preparation to do good works to everyone, as we have the opportunity. No matter how antagonistic the people around us may be, we are to be kind servants to them when their lives intersect with ours. "So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith" (Galatians 6:10). God wants us to be recognized for what we might call "consistent and aggressive goodness"--good deeds done out of love for the Lord and love for other people.

Respectful in SpeechNext, we have the scriptural duty of not maligning

anyone, not even those unbelievers who are most antagonistic toward biblical standards. Titus 3:2 begins with Paul's command "to malign no one," and refers to cursing, slandering, and treating with contempt. In fact the Greek term rendered "malign" is the one from which we derive the English word blasphemy. We can never use such speech with a righteous motive. When they do that, they actually manifest a basic disregard of their responsibility toward authority and hinder God's redemptive plan. In another of Paul's pastoral letters, he urges us to pray for everyone's salvation, even for that of those

Holy Temple of God in Christ Page 26

Member’s Manual

who occupy official positions of authority (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Peaceful and GentleWe must be kind and peaceful toward the lost, not

belligerent and quarrelsome. In the ungodly, postmodern world we live in, it's easy to condemn those who contribute to the culture's demise and write them off as corrupt sinners who will never change. If God's love for the world was so broad and intense that His Son died for a multitude of sinners (John 3:16), how can we who have received that redeeming grace be harsh and unloving toward those who have not yet received it? Until God is pleased to save an individual, he or she is going to behave like an unbeliever, and it is wrong for us, meanwhile, to treat them contemptuously for acting according to their nature.

Secondly, Paul reminds us that we must be "gentle," a word in the Greek that means being fair, moderate, and forbearing toward others. Some have translated this term "sweet reasonableness," a definition denoting an attitude that does not hold grudges but gives others the benefit of the doubt.

Consideration for Others The final duty in the Apostle Paul's list of reminders to

believers is that they should be "showing every consideration for all men" (Titus1 v. 2). The word rendered "consideration" always has a New Testament meaning of genuine concern for others.

Scripture clearly describes Jesus as the One supremely characterized by humility, or consideration for everyone--the same trait that should identify His followers. Jesus used the word to depict Himself when He told His followers, "Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble

in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29, emphasis added).

All our dealings with unbelievers should display that kind of attitude, as the apostle Peter also wrote: "Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence" (1 Peter 3:15). Sincere, heartfelt consideration to all men is foundational for our Christian walk in a pagan society.

The FamilyGod has ordained the family as the foundational

institution of human society. It is composed of persons related to one another by marriage, blood, or adoption.

Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. It is God's unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel of sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race.

The husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in God's image. The marriage relationship models the way God relates to His people. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church. He has the God-given responsibility to provide for, to protect, and to lead his family. A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation.

Children, from the moment of conception, are a blessing and heritage from the Lord. Parents are to demonstrate to their children God's pattern for marriage. Parents are to teach their children spiritual and moral values and to lead them, through consistent lifestyle example and loving discipline, to make choices based on biblical truth. Children are to honor and obey their parents.

WeddingsThe Church believes strongly in the institution of holy

matrimony as outlined in the Bible. “And he answered and said unto them, ‘Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.’” Matthew 19:4-6

Scheduling Pre-marital counseling sessions must be completed

prior to the wedding date. The number of pre-marital counseling sessions ranges

from two to five. In order to accommodate pre-marital counseling,

sessions must be scheduled at least three months prior to the wedding date.

A Wedding Form will be completed by the staff member with whom the arrangements are made.

Holy Temple Ministers are not available to perform wedding ceremonies during Sunday worship hours.

Christian GrowthEvery child of God should desire to grow spiritually.

This is scriptural, for 2 Peter 3:18 says, “Grow in grace.” When we are saved, we do not immediately become full-grown Christians but are only “babes in Christ.” As “babes” we are commanded to “grow.” To remain a “babe” is a shame and a tragedy. Only by growing spiritually can we please God and glorify him in our lives.

How can a Christian grow in grace? A large book or a

Holy Temple of God in Christ Page 32

Page 33: Member’s Manual - file · Web viewHoly Temple of God in Christ “Small church with a big heart” Word of Sister Sarah Cooper. Jean-Gerard Delinois Th.D., Presiding Elder. Member’s

Member’s Manual

series of sermons could be written on this subject, so we cannot give a comprehensive discussion here. The following principles, however, can be outlined.

1. Be sure that you are born again. Certainly you cannot grow spiritually if you are not a child of God. The Lord said, “Ye must be born again.” We are born again when we repent of sin and commit ourselves to Christ as our personal Lord and Savior. Make sure of your salvation.

2. Unite with one of the Lord’s churches, and to work for him. Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. He wants us to love it and give ourselves to it. You cannot expect to grow spiritually if you do not obey the Lord’s first command to you as a Christian—to unite with his church. You cannot live as good a Christian life outside the church as in it. Make your church the most important interest of your life. Attend the services, and participate in the activities. Matthew 6:33 says, “See ye first” the work of the Lord. We must do this to grow.

3. Cultivate your devotional life through Bible study and prayer. The Bible is God’s Word to us. Read it daily. Read it through. Read it by books and by subjects. The more you read it, the more it will mean to you. You will thus be better equipped for service to the Lord. Prayer is God’s child in conversation with him. The Bible says, “Pray without ceasing.” Pray daily. Pray about everything. Pray as you work. Have a secret place of prayer. Establish a family altar in your home—a time when all the family is gathered together for Bible reading and prayer. We cannot grow spiritually if we do not develop the devotional life.

4. Make much of Christian fellowship. Let your closest friendships be with other Christians. Visit their homes and invite them to your home. Such fellowship is rich and blessed and will be a great strength for you in resisting temptation and growing spiritually.

Page 34: Member’s Manual - file · Web viewHoly Temple of God in Christ “Small church with a big heart” Word of Sister Sarah Cooper. Jean-Gerard Delinois Th.D., Presiding Elder. Member’s

Member’s Manual

5. Separate yourself from the world (II Cor. 6:14-18). The world is against God (I John 2:15-17). We are in the world, but we must not be of the world. Let us separate ourselves from everything that is worldly, everything that would hinder our work for Christ. As long as we hold on to worldly things we cannot grow spiritually.

6. Use and cultivate your talents for the Lord. Every Christian has abilities which he can use for God. Use your ability to speak, to sing, to handle business, to bring joy to needy hearts, to teach, to organize, or whatever your talent may be. The church needs that which each member can do. Dedicate yourself to Christ today (I Cor. 12:12-31).

7. Read good books and other Christian literature. Every home should have religious books and periodicals. Subscribe for the denominational weekly paper and mission journals. Do not let the wrong type of books and other literature have a place in your home.

8. Be honest toward God in the use of your money. Every Christian’s income belongs to God. At least a tenth of it should be brought to God’s house regularly. If you are dishonest toward God in matters relating to money, your spiritual growth will be stunted. Study carefully, “God’s Plan of Church Finance” in this handbook.

9. Exercise self-control. Satan is ever seeking to hinder our Christian lives and the Lord’s work by bringing jealousy, ill-temper, and selfishness into our hearts. Church work has often been hindered by some Christian who sought to be “bossy” or was non-co-operative. Such a spirit is of the devil. If it appears in your life, destroy it by Bible study and prayer.

10. Seek the counsel and help of your pastor. He is one of the best friends you can have. God has set him in the church to aid you, to teach you, and to lead you. Confide in him. Work with him. When you are in trouble, he will be ready to help you.

Member’s Manual

When you are tempted, he will fight with you in your battle with Satan. When you need spiritual counsel or guidance, you will find no better earthly friend than your pastor. As you walk with him, you will be walking closer to God; seek his fellowship.

11. Live for Christ one day at a time. Each morning you awake to find that God has given you a new day to use for him. Life for him every minute of it—in your business, at your job, in your home, in your social relationships, and wherever you are. Live for him in the quiet moments, those times when you are alone. This does not mean that you will neglect the responsibilities of your business or home, but it does mean that you will so live that the spirit of Christ is manifested in your life. Live for Christ twenty-four hours a day. If you fail, as you sometimes will, confess your sin in repentance and ask God to help you overcome it. Sometimes Christians give up when they fail once. That is not God’s way. His Word says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9). Peter denied the Lord, but he did not turn away in despair. He came to the Lord in repentance and was forgiven. Later he became the mighty preacher of Pentecost. Do your best to resist the tempter: but if you sometimes fail, do not give up. Get up, get right, and go on. As you love for Christ one day at a time, you will soon be living weeks and months and years for him. This is the way of victorious living.

12. Win others to Christ. The greatest work in the world is soul-winning. Every Christian can and should bring others to the Savior. This work saves souls from hell, brings joy on earth and in heaven, and is the greatest means of Christian growth. Dedicate yourself to it today, and ask God to guide you. Pray for lost persons that you know. As God leads you, talk to them about their spiritual needs. Tell them about your own experience

Holy Temple of God in Christ Page 35

of salvation. This was Paul’s method. Everywhere he went, he gave testimony of his glorious conversion. Us the Bible in talking to the lost. Pray with them. Lead them to pray for themselves. When they have found the Savior, lead them to confess him openly and unite with the church. This work will give you the greatest joy you have known as a Christian (Psalm 126:5-6).

Other things could be said about growing in the spiritual life…allow the Holy Spirit to guide you, and he will lead you into greater spiritual knowledge and blessings day by day. Spiritual growth is possible. Seek it!

Baptism and the Lord's SupperChristian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water

in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer's faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believer's death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord's Supper.

The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming. Matthew 3:13-17; 26:26-30; 28:19-20; Mark 1:9-11; 14:22-26; Luke 3:21-22; 22:19-20; John 3:23; Acts 2:41-42; 8:35-39; 16:30-33; 20:7; Romans 6:3-5; 1 Corinthians 10:16,21; 11:23-29; Colossians 2:12.

Sunday School 10:00 a.m.Sunday school is open to all. There are various classes

taking place during this time and the Sunday School Superintendant or New Member coordinator can direct you to the class best for you. Sunday school is designed to provide members with a deeper study of the Word to enhance our spiritual lives.

Worship Service 11:00 a.m.Worship will be the central aspect of Heaven. Thus, it

must be the central aspect of doing church, and of each Christian's life!

We honor God by reverence and awe as respecting and

reverence His Lordship and sovereignty. As a community of believers, we are to gatherer weekly or as often as we can to mentally focus on God, and pour our hearts out to Him (1 Samuel 15:22: Matthew 15:9: Luke. 11:41-42; John 4:23; Acts 20:27; Galatians 2:20-21; Hebrews 10:24-25; 12:28-29; Revelation 1:10). Ecclesiastes 5:1 says, Guard your steps when you go to the house of God.

We praise and worship Him by singing of hymns/praise songs, prayer and/or Psalter (reading or singing the Psalms)--(Isaiah 6:1-5; Luke 11:41-42; Psalm 19; 29:2; 95:6-7; 150; Ephesians 5:19). The type and style of songs are not as important as the heart and intention of the leader and congregation. The words need to be Biblical and point to the Glory of Christ. The focus is glory and honor; it is never to be entertainment to the congregation. God is the audience and we are the performers to honor Him. It is OK to be creative in worship, such has skits, plays, and various expressions, but not for the sake of entertainment. The question to ask is, does it

distract people from the reverence and glory of Christ? If not, it probably is OK. If it does, or could, then save the entertainment for the social times.

Fellowship Fellowship is an important part of our faith. Coming

together to support one another is an experience that allows us to learn, gain strength, and show the world exactly what God is.

Fellowship is to build up and honor one another in order to strengthen the church, the people of God (Eph. 4:12; cf. 1 Cor. 14:12).

It’s also a time for socializing and meeting with fellow Christians - time of food, fellowship, and prayer

words meaning “book,” a fitting name, since the Bible is the book for all people, for all time. It’s a book like no other, in a class by itself.

Sixty-six different books comprise the Bible. They include books of law, such as Leviticus and Deuteronomy; historical books, such as Ezra and Acts; books of poetry, such as Psalms and Ecclesiastes; books of prophecy, such as Isaiah and Revelation; biographies, such as Matthew and John; and epistles (formal letters) such as Titus and Hebrews.

 - The Authors About 40 different human authors contributed to the

Bible, which was written over a period of about 1500 years. The authors were kings, fishermen, priests, government officials, farmers, shepherds, and doctors. From all this diversity comes an incredible unity, with common themes woven throughout.

The Bible’s unity is due to the fact that, ultimately, it has one Author—God Himself. The Bible is “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16). The human authors wrote exactly what God wanted them to write, and the result was the perfect and holy Word of God (Psalm 12:6; 2 Peter 1:21).

The DivisionsThe Bible is divided into two main parts: the Old

Testament and the New Testament. In short, the Old Testament is the story of a nation, and the New Testament is the story of a Man. The nation was God’s way of bringing the Man—Jesus Christ—into the world.

The Old Testament describes the founding and preservation of the nation of Israel. God promised to use Israel to bless the whole world (Genesis 12:2-3). Once Israel was established as a nation, God raised up a family within that nation through whom the blessing would come: the family of

David (Psalm 89:3-4). Then, from the family of David was promised one Man who would bring the promised blessing (Isaiah 11:1-10).

The New Testament details the coming of that promised Man. His name was Jesus, and He fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament as He lived a perfect life, died to become the Savior, and rose from the dead.

The Central Character

Jesus is the central character in the Bible—the whole book is really about Him. The Old Testament predicts His coming and sets the stage for His entrance into the world. The New Testament describes His coming and His work to bring salvation to our sinful world.

Jesus is more than a historical figure; in fact, He is more than a man. He is God in the flesh, and His coming was the most important event in the history of the world. God Himself became a man in order to give us a clear, understandable picture of who He is. What is God like? He is like Jesus; Jesus is God in human form (John 1:14, 14:9).

(Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14) Scientific Facts in the Bible1. Only in recent years has science discovered that

everything we see is composed of invisible atoms. Here, Scripture tells us that the "things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

2. Medical science has only recently discovered that blood-clotting in a newborn reaches its peak on the eighth day, then drops. The Bible consistently says that a baby must be circumcised on the eighth day.

3. At a time when it was believed that the earth sat on a large animal or a giant (1500 B.C.), the Bible spoke of the earth’s free float in space: "He...hangs the earth upon nothing" (Job 26:7).

4. The prophet Isaiah also tells us that the earth is round: "It is he that sits upon the circle of the earth" (Isaiah 40:22). This is not a reference to a flat disk, as some skeptic maintain, but to a sphere. Secular man discovered this 2,400 years later. At a time when science believed that the earth was flat, is was the Scriptures that inspired Christopher Columbus to sail around the world (see Proverbs 3:6 footnote).

5. God told Job in 1500 B.C.: "Can you send lightnings, that they may go, and say to you, here we are?" (Job 38:35). The Bible here is making what appears to be a scientifically ludicrous statement—that light can be sent, and then manifest itself in speech. But did you know that radio waves travel at the speed of light? This is why you can have instantaneous wireless communication with someone on the other side of the earth. Science didn’t discover this until 1864 when "British scientist James Clerk Maxwell suggested that electricity and light waves were two forms of the same thing" (Modern Century Illustrated Encyclopedia).

6. Job 38:19 asks, "Where is the way where light dwells?" Modern man has only recently discovered that light (electromagnetic radiation) has a "way," traveling at 186,000 miles per second.

7. Science has discovered that stars emit radio waves, which are received on earth as a high pitch. God mentioned this in Job 38:7: "When the morning stars sang together..."

8. "Most cosmologists (scientists who study the structures and evolution of the universe) agree that the Genesis account of creation, in imagining an initial void, may be uncannily close to the truth" (Time, Dec. 1976).

9. Solomon described a "cycle" of air currents two thousand years before scientists "discovered" them. "The wind goes toward the south, and turns about unto the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to his circuits" (Ecclesiastes 1:6).

10. Science expresses the universe in five terms: time, space, matter, power, and motion. Genesis 1:1,2 revealed such truths to the Hebrews in 1450 B.C.: "In the beginning [time] God created [power] the heaven [space] and the earth [matter] . . . And the Spirit of God moved [motion] upon the face of the waters." The first thing God tells man is that He controls of all aspects of the universe.

11. The great biological truth concerning the importance of blood in our body’s mechanism has been fully comprehended only in recent years. Up until 120 years ago, sick people were "bled," and many died because of the practice. If you lose your blood, you lose your life. Yet Leviticus 17:11, written 3,000 years ago, declared that blood is the source of life: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood."

12. All things were made by Him (see John 1:3), including dinosaurs. Why then did the dinosaur disappear? The answer may be in Job 40:15–24. In this passage, God speaks

about a great creature called "behemoth." Some commentators think this was a hippopotamus. However, the hippo’s tail isn’t like a large tree, but a small twig. Following are the characteristics of this huge animal: It was the largest of all the creatures God made; was plant-eating (herbivorous); had its strength in its hips and a tail like a large tree. It had very strong bones, lived among the trees, drank massive amounts of water, and was not disturbed by a raging river. He appears impervious to attack because his nose could pierce through snares, but Scripture says, "He that made him can make his sword to approach unto him." In other words, God caused this, the largest of all the creatures He had made, to become extinct.

13. Encyclopedia Britannica documents that in 1845, a young doctor in Vienna named Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was horrified at the terrible death rate of women who gave birth in hospitals. As many as 30 percent died after giving birth. Semmelweis noted that doctors would examine the bodies of patients who died, then, without washing their hands, go straight to the next ward and examine expectant mothers. This was their normal practice, because the presence of microscopic diseases was unknown. Semmelweis insisted that doctors wash their hands before examinations, and the death rate immediately dropped to 2 percent. Look at the specific instructions God gave His people for when they encounter disease: "And when he that has an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself even days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean" (Leviticus 15:13). Until recent years, doctors washed their hands in a bowl of water, leaving invisible germs on their hands. However, the Bible says specifically to wash hands under "running water."

14. Luke 17:34–36 says the Second Coming of Jesus Christ will occur while some are asleep at night and others are working at daytime activities in the field. This is a clear

indication of a revolving earth, with day and night at the same time.

15. "During the devastating Black Death of the fourteenth century, patients who were sick or dead were kept in the same rooms as the rest of the family. People often wondered why the disease was affecting so many people at one time. They attributed these epidemics to ‘bad air’ or ‘evil spirits.’ However, careful attention to the medical commands of God as revealed in Leviticus would have saved untold millions of lives. Arturo Castiglione wrote about the overwhelming importance of this biblical medical law: ‘The laws against leprosyin Leviticus 13 may be regarded as the first model of sanitary legislation’ (A History of Medicine)." Grant R. Jeffery, The Signature of God With all these truths revealed in Scripture, how could a thinking person deny that the Bible is supernatural in origin? There is no other book in any of the world’s religions (Vedas, Bhagavad-Gita, Koran, Book of Mormon, etc.) that contains scientific truth. In fact, they contain statements that are clearly unscientific. Hank Hanegraaff said, "Faith in Christ is not some blind leap into a dark chasm, but a faith based on established evidence." (11:3 continued)

James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

 Prayer

We are a praying church. God speaks to us through His written word, the Bible. Christians speak to God through prayer. Prayer is an important part of the Christian’s life; we pray in words and sometimes we pray in song.

for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
