MPPS: Leader In Robotics
Principal’s Report
Last week, I attended a principal conference with colleagues from a variety of schools across New South Wales. The focus of the conference centred on the Department of Education’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022 and our role as leaders, teachers, learners and community members. The wider Department of Education goals include: All children make a strong start in life and learning and make a successful transition to school.
Every student is known, valued and cared for in our schools.
Every student, every teacher, every leader and every school improves every year.
Every student is engaged and challenged to continue to learn.
All young people have a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy; deep content knowledge; and confidence in their ability to learn, adapt and be responsible citizens.
All young people finish school well prepared for higher education, training and work.
Education is a great place to work and our workforce is of the highest calibre.
Our school infrastructure meets the needs of a growing population and enables future-focused learning and teaching.
Community confidence in public education is high.
Our education system reduces the impact of disadvantage.
These goals have been used to inform our school plan and strategic directions for 2018-2020.

Successful Students
Wellbeing – The Bounce Back Program All students across the school are continuing their journey of positive wellbeing through Bounce Back. The Bounce Back program provides student with opportunities to explore social-emotional competencies and develop self-management strategies to bounce back. Our Wellbeing Support Officers will be delivering the program in K-6 classes alongside class teachers.
Spotlight on Robotics Melrose Park PS was officially recognised as a Leader in Robotics and Mrs Grover accepted the Technology For Learning Award at a ceremony last week. We are very proud of this recognition as it represents the engagement of our students in robotics and their developing skills in programming, collaborating and problem solving. Our students attended the RoboCup yesterday and enjoyed the challenge of competitions against other schools.
Effective Practices Visible Learning The Learner Quality of the week is: I am Optimistic. To be optimistic, students need to think positively. They need to come up with solutions to problems and develop a growth mindset to make academic and personal improvements.
A Focus on Differentiation Differentiation is the way in which teachers meet the needs of the diversity of students in their class. Teachers may differentiate the content, processes, product and environment to support all learners in the classroom. They pose different questions and provide point in time feedback to ensure all students can engage in all learning activities in a personalised way. Our teachers are continually researching and developing their skills in differentiated practice.
Connected Communities
Tucker Time - Funds for A Farmer As we know, Australian farmers are in the middle of a drought. To support our Aussie Farmers, all proceeds from this week’s Tucker Time will be donated to https://afiverforafarmer.com.au/. For Tucker Time this week, Dairy Farmer’s Chocolate Milkshakes or Australian Grown Orange Juice will be on sale for a gold coin donation.
Website Thank you for your patience while our website is being updated. We are hoping all areas will be finalised soon.
Parent Teacher Interviews Parent Teacher interviews will be held next week. This provides you with an opportunity to discuss the social, emotional and academic progress of your child with the classroom teacher. In addition you will develop further understanding of your child’s achievements and next steps in learning.
Questions to ask your child about their day at school
What learning situation did you need to feel optimistic in?
What was something that made your brain hurt?
In what way/s were you kind to someone else today?

NSW Robocup Junior 2018 at UNSW
On the 20th of August a number of students went to the UNSW for the Junior Robocup tournament. The students competed in the different types of competitions such as dance, soccer, Simple Simon soccer, rescue and line following. The students did many fun activities like showing off there robots, playing soccer with their robots, programming there robots and designing costumes and as well as having lots of fun and laughs along the way. My group, Star Wars Realm did very well with our dance project, and all the other teams who were doing either simple Simon soccer or line following. Everyone had lots of fun going to the robocup and competing against the various schools and we really enjoyed our friends being with us too. On behalf of the school I would like to thank Mrs Grover and all the other teachers and parent helpers for helping us with our projects and robots. We enjoyed the day and we would love to do it next year as well. Ewan (6M)

Meadowbank Outdoor Youth and Family Recreation Space
For many years the people of Ryde have been trying to implement a skatepark and youth space in Meadowbank Park which would attract many young people and their families.
In 2017, my friends and family, had the opportunity to be part of various council meetings and design sessions to put through the idea of a skatepark to the Meadowbank Park area, and now in August 2018 construction started for the youth space. It will include: skate bowls, parkour areas rock climbing, a sitting area, lights, and security camera. It will be located on the stretch of the park on Constitution Road, next to the soccer fields.
