Dear music-lover!
Welcome to Melodica Aarhus 2014. This year marks our fifth anniversary, and as we look back upon our first four years, we’re proud of the long string of Danish and foreign songwriters who have graced the festival stages. We’re also proud to pres-ent a 2014 program packed with musical morsels that showcase the quality, vitality and diversity of the singer-songwriter genre. Expect a festival where there is room for the classic troubadour with guitar and harmonica, the songwriter who creates an electronic universe of music – and everyone in between. We’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers who have been helping the festival run smoothly; to Sidsel Bech Kiilerich for creating a marvelous festival poster; and to Misha Hoekstra for translating the program.Last but not least we’d like to thank Aarhus Municipality, Akustikken, Engelsholm Folk High School, Backstage and Gyngen. Melodicah Aarhus 2014 would never have been possible without their backing and support. All that’s left to say is that we look forward to seeing you, the audience
ENJOY THE MUSIC!
Melodica Aarhus?
Melodica Aarhus is part of an international network of songwriter festivals. The first Melodica festival took place in Melbourne in 2007. After that it spread to Sydney, New York, Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Groningen, Aarhus and Reykjavik.Besides giving audiences a chance to become familiar with the variety and excel-lence of songwriting on the local and international scene, Melodica festivals are also dedicated to strengthening their network and promoting interactions between songwriters across national boundaries.

ENGELSHOLM HØJSKOLE // ENGELSHOLM FOLK HIGH SCHOOLEngelsholm provides its students with room to immerse themselves in creative expression, whether visual (painting, graphic art, jewelry, photography, VJing and sculpture) or musical (songwriting and electronica). This year Melodica is featuring three of Engelsholm’s songwriting students.
ANDREAS STENT LUNDBY Presenting an absorbing world of songs about love’s sharp edges, Andreas Lundby unfurls himself in a poetic borderland between giddy infatuation and the loneliness of loss. He communicates his lovely lyrics with the accessibility of pop, using his hovering falsetto melodies to lure listeners into a young man’s hopeful musical being.

INUIT FEET (GL/DK) TIME: Friday 20.10 – 20.50
LOCATION: BACKSTAGEWEB: inuitfeet.com
SANDRA MUSSI KRAG-CHRISTENSENSandra explores deep existential fields in her lyrics and intense music. Her compelling songs and voice hearken back to the great artists of the 90’s, unfolding movingly and distinctively.
RASMUS KIRKETERPAn original new voice in Danish rock, Rasmus’s powerfully raw songs about love’s many shapes form a fine addition to the Danish rock troubadour tradition,.Despite his tender 21 years of age, Rasmus wields the Danish tongue and the acoustic guitar with authority. Expect to hear a lot more of him in the future.
Drawing on his Green-landic roots, lead singer Kristian Mikkelsen writes subtle, imaginative lyrics in a mix of Danish and Greenlandic. The sound of Inuit Feet varies as its lineup shifts, but one thing remains certain: Kristian will stand front and center and make sure the music swings!.

interpretations of her songs, making melody,
atmosphere and rhythm melt together in a playful
manner.
IX is Marnix Dorrestein’s alter ego, a solo project.
Marnix grew up in a musi-cal family, with both parents
classically trained guitar players. Yet he didn’t start by picking up a guitar but by beating pots and pans
until he got his first drum kit at the age of five.
Marnix earned a degree from the Amsterdam con-servatory and has played
with numerous acts and artists in theatres through-
out Europe.

SNEJEGAST (DK) TIME: Friday 00.40 – 01:20 LOCATION: BACKSTAGEWEB: snejegast.dk
Danish-Norwegian Kjartan Bue writes poetic tales of encounters between and within human beings. As
a songwriter, he draws in-spiration from artists such as Townes Van Zandt and Leonard Cohen. His many
performances this past year have given Kjartan a reputation for compelling
live performance.
An Aarhusian folk-rock orchestra that pulls out all the stops no matter what
harbor it finds itself in. With maritime inspira-
tion and a lyric universe grounded in sea shanties and sailor life, you know visibility must be poor if
Snejegast is in port.

CO-WRITES
TIME: Saturday 17:00 – 18:40 LOCATION: BACKSTAGE
Josefine Skov is an Aarhus songwriter who moves stylistically within the melancholic sphere. She’s been both vocalist and songwriter for Pocket Prophets and Outdoor Cinema, but at present she plays with the rock group Duel & Death. At Melodica, Josefine will appear under her own name with her own band, featuring folky strings, double bass, drums and atmospheric electric guitar.
A co-write is created when two or more songwriters collaborate on a new song. This year, Melodica Aarhus has embraced this concept, in part to foster stronger ties among the participants. We’ve asked all the songwriters to pre-miere the resulting songs at the festival.
SO SO SOFIE (DK)TIME: Saturday 19.50 – 20.30 LOCATION: BACKSTAGEWEB: facebook.com/sososofie
AUTUMN BIRDS (DK)TIME: Saturday 20.40 – 21.10 LOCATION: GYNGEN WEB: facebook.com/k.hoelgaard
So so Sofie plays dreamy minimalist pop with a
focus on vocals, drawing listeners into an imagistic
universe in which the natural starting point is
love. Usually So so Sofie performs live as a duo,
but for this concert Sofie will play solo on piano,
omnichord and loop ma-chine.
A duo consisting of Britt Rasmussen and Kristine
Hoelgaard, who write songs based on the me-lodic Scandinavian blue tone. Their Danish and English lyrics describe
everyday experiences in a poetic light. Britt and Kris-
tine double up on guitar and vocals, to which they
add diverse percus-sion. Look forward to a
performance of intimacy and charm.
HJALTI ÞORKELSSON (IS)TIME: Saturday 22.10 – 22.50

PHIA (AUS)
TIME: Saturday 21.20 – 22.00LOCATION: BACKSTAGE

Phia, otherwise known as Sophia Exiner, was born in Melbourne, Australia. She studied classical and improvised piano at university until she grew restless and moved to Berlin.
Anonymous and liberated, she played every small bar in the city, toting an African kalimba and loop pedal in her bike basket to make her trademark pop – “hypnotic, joyful, and definitely danceable” (Match Musik).
Hjalti Þorkelsson had his start as frontman and songwriter for the Icelandic band Múgsefjun. He first performed solo at the 2009 Reykjavík Melodica Festival. The songs he played there laid the groundwork for Múgsefjun’s critically praised second album, which was nominated for best lyrics at the Icelandic Music Awards.
As this year’s North Atlan-tic guest, Hjalti will per-form his elaborate songs in his mother tongue.
FALLINN WOLFF (D)TIME: Saturday 23:50 – 00.30LOCATION: GYNGEN WEB: fallinnwolff.com
JAKOB SCHMITZ MOURIDSEN (DK) TIME: Saturday 19.50 – 20.30 LOCATION: BACKSTAGEWEB: soundcloud.com/jakobmou
With their strong narrative element, the songs of Jakob Mouridsen are
inspired by true events and related observa-
tions. His music extends from the stripped-down and authentic to more
expansive and dreamlike soundscapes with numer-
ous electronic elements that, in combination with
his distinctive lead vocals, serve to create a uniquely captivating sonic universe.
Fallinn Wolff weaves a fairytale from stories and melodies. Their musical
journey brings us to a magical world, combining
elements from genres that range from jazz to spheri-
cal indie pop.
The duo formed in 2009 while studying music in
the Netherlands.
