MELISSA was founded back in 1921 by a lady in
Thessaloniki for taking in orphan children coming from
Pontos. In 1922, the Greek State offered the honoring
privilege to the Orphanage to raise all the Greek children
sent to Greece from the Orphanage of Smyrna, following
the Destruction of Smyrna.
Legal institution governed by private law
Governed by a Board of Directors of 10 individuals
The Orphanage takes in pre-teen and teen girls from
social services where they end up following a Prosecutor’s
order, aiming to protect the children from acts of abuse,
abandonment and parental neglect

MELISSA’s main problem today: The significant reduction of income

MELISSA Girls Orphanage Thessaloniki
For the residential Institution, resulting from the dramatic
reduction of state funding mainly due to the recession Greece
experiences for the 6th consecutive year. The reduction of the
state funding is also accompanied by a significant delay in terms
of payment. Due to the recession, we are totally unaware of
whether any amount of state funding will continue to be
granted to the institution.
For the Association, resulting from the reduction of the real
estate property income (inelastic reduction) due to a) high
taxation, b) reduced possibility to rent properties, c) reduction
of rents, again mainly due to the recession
The significant reduction of income for both the
institution and the association results in the
Orphanage’s economic weakness, questioning even its
viability and existence in the year of 2014, though
MELISSA has even survived the World War II
Such being the case, MELISSA is currently seeking new
sources of income, while also ways of recruiting new
supporters in order to be able to continue offering vital
services and protection to children having experienced
the worst in life from their own family environment
