This was the rst time a Schools Forum has been held in NSW. I think it’s very important, especially when it comes to education, to go to people who are working day-to-day in our schools and ask them for their vie ws.  The Government will be conducting a series of such Forums around the country seeking input from School Principals, teachers and parents into the Gonski Review and its recommendations. People unable to attend the Forum were encouraged to participate via  T witter and online by questioning or commenting to the Prime Minister and the Minister .  All schools from the electorates of Banks and Watson were invited to attend and most were able to send representatives.  The Department of ducation, mployment and Workplace Relations lmed the event and the video is available at their website, together with a transcript.www. deewr.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx Local school community forum with the Prime Minister On 8 March I was honoured to invite the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and the Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett to a local forum to discuss educational reform. had to say about their day to day

experiences as carers, professionals

or those with disabilities. Senator

McLucas explained this forum

was part of the critical work to get

disability services NDIS-ready

– it includes developing a set

of common assessment tools

and establishing national quality

  959 job opportunities

were displayed on theJobs Boards, with many

vacancies only being

advised by xhibitors on

the day; and

  1,536 resumes were

lodged with exhibitors over

the course of the day.

BUdgE t 2012

This payment will replace the

Education Tax Refund from

1 January 2013.

Under the existing system, one

million families aren’t claimingwhat they’re entitled to – either

claiming less than the full

amount, or claiming nothing at

all. That’s 80% of eligible families.

In Banks that represents 7,450

local families who can expect

to receive a total of $410 a year

for each child in primary school

and $820 for each high school

child, totalling $7,832,350 worth

of assistance for families in ourelectorate.

 This new guaranteed payment will

help the families pay for uniforms,

books, school excursions,

stationery, and other costs

like music lessons and sports

registration fees.

Because the payment is

automatic and upfront, it means:

Parents don’t need to keep

receipts for months and

months – it’s a guaranteed

payment.

Parents will receive the full

amount every time, so familieswon’t miss out if they lose

receipts.

Parents don’t have to pay out

of their own pocket, then wait

months to get paid back. The

payment will be paid upfront,

twice a year, before the start

of Term 1 and Term 3.

No paperwork is required.

As part of the transition to the

new Schoolkids Bonus, the

ducation Tax Refund for 2011-12

will be paid out in full to all eligible

families as a lump sum payment in

June 2012.

Just like the ducation Tax

Refund, the Schoolkids Bonus will

be available to families receiving

Family Tax Benet Part A as at 8

May 2012, plus young people in

school receiving Youth Allowance.

SupportingbusinessThe Government will introduce loss

carry-back to help businesses return

to prot.

In 2012-13 companies will be able to

carry back tax losses of up to $1 million

against tax previously paid. From 2013-

14 companies will be able to carry back

losses for 2 years. This provides a tax

benet of up to $300,000 per year.

For example, a manufacturer makes a

prot in 2011-2012 and pays $300,000 in

tax. The next year they make a loss due

to depreciation on new investments. The

company qualies for loss carry-back andare able to get up to $300,000 back.

This will help companies to nance the

investments, training and restructuring that

is needed to improve competitiveness.

This initiative will support productivity and

promote employment.

 The 2012-13 Budget will direct

vital health dollars to additional

training to help boost the public

dental service workforce, and

improve dental infrastructure in

regional, rural and remote areas.

 This year’s Budget will see

$345.9 million directed to treating

patients on waiting lists over

the next 3 years, providing vital

services to around 400,000 adults

including support for Indigenous

 Australians.

This spending will see a blitz on

state government waiting lists

to help meet the emergency

treatment and prevention needs of people who are eligible for public

dental care.

What funding is the

Government committing

to the dental initiative?

Public dental waiting lists –

$345.9 million over 3 years.

xpansion of the voluntarydental graduate year program

– $35.7 million over 3 years.

Oral health therapist graduate

year program – $45.2 million

over 4 years.

Pro bono dental services pilot

– $450,000 over 3 years.

Relocation and infrastructure

grants for dentists – $77.7million over 4 years.

Oral health promotion – $10.5

million over 3 years.

 Arts fundingThe Government has provided

a funding boost for Australia’s

pre-eminent national collecting

institutions.

I am particularly pleased with this outcome

as it will protect those institutions from

the 4% efciency dividend which is being

brought in across the public service. I spoke

in parliament on this matter last year. Those national and cultural institutions

affected include: The National Maritime

Museum; Bundanon Trust; Museum of

Democracy at Old Parliament House;

National Film & Sound Archives; National

Gallery; National Library; National Museum;

and National Archives.

Funding will be provided to the National

Portrait Gallery to become an independent

statutory authority which brings it in line

with the other institutions.

There is also new funding for the War

Memorial and the Institute of Aboriginal

and Torres Strait Islander Studies.

Lest We Forget ANZAC Day

Each year, with many of you,

I attend various eventsacross the electorate tocommemorate ANZAC Day.

 These can take many forms

– a formal Service, a march, or

a commemoration at a school.

For others watching the traditional

ANZAC Day March in Sydney on

television is their way of recognising

our servicemen and servicewomen.

Whatever the form, the objective is

for us to remember those who served

our country and especially those

who made the ultimate sacrice.

This is particularly signicant as we

recognise the individuals currently

serving overseas. We also appreciate

the contribution of our service families

in their support of their loved ones.

One of the events I attended this

year was the Service conducted

by Riverwood Sub Branch at the

Riverwood Legion and Community

Club where I delivered the oration.

DarylMelhamwrites...In April, my personalwebsite was launched.

www.darylmelhammp.com

 The website will maintain the

theme that I incorporate into this

newsletter – a focus on what’s

happening in the community.

I intend to include reports of events

around the community; information

on how my ofce can assist you;

links to some useful governmentwebsites; some parliamentary

information; and information from

our community about what’s

coming up.

I’d be interested in your feedback

and input as to the type of things

you’d like to see that would be of

use to you.

If you have some upcoming events

that you would like publicised, thenplease send the information via the

website feedback form or ring my

ofce on 9774 2111.
