Jackie Bell (pictured) has been announced as the new leader of Helloworld’s The Travel Brokers network, as the group talks up an increased focus on the broker space. Bell, formerly the head of operations at Helloworld’s corporate arm APX, is charged with growing the broker group from its current 100 members to 175 by 2020, ‘and there’s a focus on quality not quantity’, says Helloworld New Zealand boss Simon McKearney. “It’s a coup for us to get [Bell] on board and ac- tually we were in a very privileged position to have such a high of ap- plicants,” says McKear- ney. “The broker space is continuing to grow ex- ponentially and we are finalising plans to bring our new broker proposi- tion to the market.” Full details of that ‘new and im- proved’ broker offering are yet to be released—but McKearney did say the group is looking to roll out a ‘market-leading value proposition’ that delivers what he says will be a best in market model—from inquiry generation to marketing, and tech- nology. “We’ve been working on it, and we have a number of initiatives planned across a number of facets of the business— and we’re also keen to also recognise that there is a wide spectrum of brokers not just the traditional home based model, and cater to those dif- ferent segments,” he added. . . . Atlanta-Hartsfield-Jackson has retained its position as the world’s busiest airport last year, according to Airports Council International’s preliminary passenger traffic re-sults based on reports from 1144 airports worldwide. Growing by 5.5% year-over-year in passenger traffic to the record-break-ing total of over 100 million passen-gers in 2015, Atlanta has benefited from its location as a major connect-ing hub and port on entry into North America—it is within a two-hour flight of 80% of the US population. While Beijing was poised to close the gap on Atlanta by 2015, it no longer benefits from the double-digit growth it enjoyed in previous years, and as such remains in second position. The combination of a Chinese slowdown and capacity constraints has meant lower growth levels at the airport.

In total, it grew by 4.4% in total pas-senger traffic to just shy of 90 million passengers. Moving from the sixth busiest airport in 2014 to the third position in 2015 is Dubai. Total passenger traffic at the airport grew by 10.7% in 2015 to 78 million. It is also the world’s busiest in terms of international passengers, ahead of London Heathrow. Chicago O’Hare moved up to become the fourth-ranked airport in 2015 from seventh position in 2014, with 76.9 million passengers, a rise of 9.8%. After years of congestion, the airport is reaping the benefits of runway expansions and other capacity devel-opments. Rounding out the top five is Tokyo, with a 3.4% increase in passengers to 75 million.“It’s impressive to witness the dynam-ic character of the aviation industry and its evolution over time,” says ACI’s Angela Gittens. “In certain markets, we see both airlines and airport oper-ators expanding and optimising their capacity in order to accommodate the growing demand for air transport.”Even in the most mature markets, like the US and parts of Western Europe, several major hubs saw year-on-year growth rates in passenger traffic well above historical growth levels for these regions, says Gittens. “On the other hand, we continue to observe double-digit growth rates at major Middle Eastern and Asian hubs serv-ing long haul routes in emerging markets.”

World’s Busiest Airports In 2015

Vanuatu Runway DelayThe repairs on Vanuatu’s runway have been delayed but are 95% complete and should be finished in the com-ing weeks, says the Vanuatu Tourism Office. The repairs were scheduled to be completed yesterday, however due to ‘unforeseen shipping challenges in Fiji’ there was a slight delay with the arrival of specialist cold mix asphalt, says Fulton Hogan. All parties are working together to fast-track the delivery of materials to the runway and ensure the repairs are completed as soon as possible, says the VTO. Air Vanuatu, Fiji Airways, and Aircalin are continuing all scheduled flights as normal.Meanwhile, the VTO marketing team is preparing to launch Vanuatu’s big-gest consumer marketing campaign to date this May. “We look forward to launching the campaign which we hope will entice New Zealanders to book their next holiday in Vanuatu,” says VTO general manager Linda Kalpoi.

SQ/LH EnhancedThe Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa groups are expanding their codeshare deal to offer SQ customers access to over 20 new routes on LH- and Swiss-operated flights, to/from points in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Swit-zerland via Munich and Zurich, says SQ. In return, LH and Swiss customers will be able to access codeshare travel on SQ-operated flights on routes serv-ing destinations in Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific. The expanded deal is the result of a joint venture agreement signed be-tween the two airline groups last Nov, and is subject to regulatory approvals. The pair plan to jointly offer custom-ers from these markets ‘more seam-less access to flights, a broad range of joint fare products and aligned cor-porate programmes to strengthen the proposition to corporate customers, among other benefits’.

Fiji: Bula To The SunThe sun is out in Fiji and Tourism Fiji reports that there was actu-ally very little rainfall overnight as Tropical Cyclone Zena passed over the island nation. Fiji’s tour-ism industry is breathing a col-lective sigh of relief and the flood waters from earlier in the week are continuing to dissipate. Tour-ism Fiji regional manager Wayne Deed says there’s still clean-up underway in some areas like Nadi town, but that basically things are returning to normal—as per the photo taken at Plantation Island Resort this morning.

Un-Cruise Adventures Anniversary SavingsUn-Cruise Adventures is celebrating its 20th anniversary by offering savings of up to USD400 per couple on selected small-ship cruises booked and deposited by 20 May, advises World Journeys. The offer applies to Alaskan cruises such as the eight-day Discoverers Glacier Country as well as cruises along the Columbia & Snake Rivers, in Mexico’s Sea of Cortes, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii, adds the wholesaler.

Aranui Cruises has released two bonus sailings for 2017 in re-sponse to strong demand for its new ship Aranui 5.The cruise line will offer 19 depar-tures in 2017 and Aranui’s regional representative Australia New Zea-land Laurent Wong said the com-pany was thrilled with the reception Aranui 5 had received, especially out of this region where bookings were tipped to double this year.“While our new ship offers 25% more capacity than Aranui 3, most of the year’s cruises are already fully booked so we’ve decided to intro-duce two additional voyages in 2017 to help satisfy demand,” he says.

“Aranui 5 offers the same great val-ue 14-day adventure across three French Polynesian archipelagos but with all the mod cons and elegant island styling of a modern freighter it has attracted even more new and returning Aranui guests.”The cruises, roundtrip from Papeete, visit a range of islands in the Mar-quesas and Tuamotus as well as the famed Society Island of Bora Bora. Throughout the journey, clients can enjoy the comforts of a cruise ship including a restaurant, two confer-ence rooms, lounges, library, com-puter room, boutique, swimming pool, fitness room, spa and four bars. Earlybird rates for 2017 start from $6338 for Aranui 5’s 08 Jun 2017 departure including a 10% discount. Seniors can also take advantage of a discounted fare on the 30 Sep 2017 departure which is priced from $6338 for travellers aged over 60 years. The additional voyages will see a change in departure day from Sat to either a Tue or Thu in 2017, although the duration of the full Aranui cruise will remain unchanged. This is pos-sible due to the turnaround of the ship, which remains in port stock-ing cargo for several days between itineraries.

Strong Demand Sees More Aranui Sailings

travel is a broader definition of the workplace and a focus on risk man-agement, says APX.It changes the focus from the physi-cal workplace to what the business actually does and what it can control; and shifts from hazard spotting to managing critical risks (actions that reduce workplace harm rather than trivial hazards).“Although it’s unlikely that we’ll know the full significance of the new legisla-tion across all industries and busi-ness activities—including corporate travel—until specific cases have been tested through the court system, what is clear is that companies will need to demonstrate a proactive approach to health and safety for all employees and workers, irrespective of their physical workplace,” says APX.Businesses should consider whether they have a proactive risk manage-ment plan to work alongside their cor-porate travel programme, says APX.“Recent adverse events around the globe have reinforced how important information is when it comes to trav-eller safety—but regardless of health scares such as the Zika virus, ongoing conflicts, natural disasters, or acts of terrorism such as those in Belgium and France—New Zealand compa-nies still need to do business around the world to remain competitive.”

. . . Value Of AgentsFor corporate agents, a sound knowl-edge of the changes is another way they can display their value to clients.“[Businesses] need to be aware of the changes and what’s happened and what that means for them,” says FCM’s Andy Jack. “That’s one of the reasons to use a TMC like FCM—we have our crisis team in place, we have the knowledge and expertise, and we’re up to date with what the changes are.”For more on the new legislation, see worksafe.govt.nz/hswa
