Seniors urged to be scam savvy■ Fair Trading officials are remind-ing seniors to be wary of randomphone calls, emails or letters they mayreceive requesting money or personaldetails as many of these are simply ascam.
Brian Bauer says seniors shouldexamine those issues that affect thisgroup in the community.
“From a consumer protection per-spective, one issue that seems to berelevant to seniors is the prevalenceof scams targeted towards them,” MrBauer said.
“Sadly seniors are commonly theunsuspecting victims of commonscams like the Nigerian money scam, inheritance scams and fake overseaslotteries.
“Therefore it is timely to remindseniors to be wary of these types ofscams which operate on the basis ofappearing to be legitimate request butin reality is just a ploy to gain accessto your hard earned savings or to ob-tain your identity to be used for fraudu-lent purposes.”
Mr Bauer said the well-knowncomputer virus con seems to be thescam of the moment with Fair Trad-ing offices around Australia receiv-ing many reports over the past fewmonths.
“In this scam, consumers receivea cold call from a person purportingto be from a reputable computer com-pany,” Mr Bauer said.
“The caller advises the person thatthey have a record showing their com-puter has been infected with a virusand by allowing remote access to theircomputer the company can run a scanto identify the virus.
“Usually a fake scan is done on
the computer with the caller inform-ing the consumer the scan has indeedconfirmed a virus however by pur-chasing a virus protection programover the phone they can install soft-ware to eradicate the virus.
“The caller requests bank detailsto purchase the software but sadly theonly thing that is removed is fundsfrom the consumer’s bank account. In some cases a person’s identity canalso be stolen from this type of scam.”
Mr Bauer said many seniors mayfall victim to this type of scam.
“If you receive a call from a per-son saying your computer has a virusour advice is simply hang up.
These callers are usually basedoverseas and are banking on you be-lieving their fabricated story is the truthand in order to protect yourself youmust give them access to your com-puter and buy their computer soft-ware,” Mr Bauer said.
“If you have some concerns aboutthe security of your computer takeyour machine to a reputable computerservice centre or arrange for them tovisit you in person at your home.
“Better still ask a family memberor trusted friend who may have someknowledge of computer security toinstall authentic virus and spywareprotection.
“Always be wary of any personwho contacts you out of the bluewhether it is via email, phone or letterrequesting an upfront payment or per-sonal details.
“There is a very good chance theirintentions are not as honourable as youmay think,” Mr Bauer said.

Green Hearts Recyclers wasfounded by the Melbourne business-man following his approach to formerSt Kilda Rd business Hospira duringtheir relocation process to the CBD.
Mr Sidebottom asked if he couldtake their unwanted office furniture, telephones, cables and even stationeryin the event they had no destination inmind.
He was given the go ahead to selltheir unwanted furniture and officeequipment and within four weeksraised $23,000 - 100 per centof theproceeds going directly to The ThinkPink Foundation.
Philip’s basic concept of intercept-ing goods destined for land fill to re-cycle back into the community soon
caught the attention of other liked-minded companies aroundMelbourne, inspiring him to take theconcept to a new level.
Philip is inundated with calls of-fering entire office strip outs, un-wanted furniture and recently re-ceived twenty reconditioned PC’s do-nated by ARRB Group Ltd in Ver-mont South that will be delivered tothe homes of underprivileged childrento assist with their education and homestudies.

“With the positive response andsupport we have received whilst es-tablishing Green Hearts Recyclers, Iam thrilled to be able to officiallylaunch in the lead-up to the holidayseason as we have immediate plansto collect and recycle clothing in thenew year and we are currentlyfinalising the infrastructure to enable
Green Hearts to turn scrap metal intomonetary value,” Mr Sidebottomsaid.
Green Hearts Recyclers is seekingsupport from a variety of sources in-cluding; large and small commercialstrip outs, individuals and corporatesponsorship.
Green Hearts Recyclers will soonprovide collection bins in a number ofcommercial and residential apartmentbuildings throughout the Melbournearea, for collection of small soft itemssuch as clothing.
Of recent years, Philip has beenthe driving force behind raising much-needed funds for several Melbournebased projects, having raised in ex-cess of $1.5 million in direct dona-tions, goods and services to meetproject objectives including: the de-velopment and completion of themulti-million dollar project; ‘TheThink Pink Living Centre’ on St KildaRd and the redevelopment of the out-door dining, entertainment and children’s play-ground area for Parkville’s RonaldMcDonald House.
“I am absolutely passionate aboutmaking a positive difference in thelives of others. I’ve enjoyed workingon various not-for-profit projects andbelieve Green Hearts Recyclers willappeal to like-minded companies andindividuals who want to help improvethe quality of lives of those facinghealth, financial or social challenges, whilst creating a sustainable environ-ment for future generations.”

■ If ever there’s a town that’s a‘must-visit’ for romantics orchocoholics it’s Perugia in Italy. And if you’re both, you’ll find your-self in Seventh Heaven: One of thetown’s biggest factories makes choco-lates called Kisses – and there’s astreet that’s so narrow it’s officiallynamed Woman Kisser Lane, andwhose tradition demands that you of-fer a kiss as you squeeze past anyonecoming in the opposite direction.
There’s no mention if you givethem a chocolate afterwards.
Perugia is the capital of Umbriaabout halfway between Rome and Flo-rence and it’s Perugina chocolate fac-tory makes the world-famous choco-lates called Baci – Italian for ‘kisses’.
As anyone with a sweet toothknows, these tasty little bundles ofchocolate incorporate nougat andground hazelnuts, and are then toppedwith a whole hazelnut, covered withanother coating of chocolate, and fi-nally wrapped in foil that carries anexpression of love in a half-dozen ormore languages.
Luisa Spagnoli started thePerugina chocolate factory with fel-low confectioner Giovanni Buitoni in1907 when she was 30 years old.
Locals say the pair fancied eachother and initially exchanged clandes-tine messages through their own hand-made chocolates – but historiansscotch that as fanciful urban myth.
The factory started with a hand-full of workers, but today is owned bythe multi-national Nestlé company
■ NSW’s Southern Highland Wineshas released a crackajack 2011Oldbury Reserve Sauvignon Blancthat’s very much in the style of its2009 – the most-awarded wine in thecompany’s young eight-yearwinemaking history.
Located in picturesque high-alti-tude and cool-climate country outsidethe little hamlet of Sutton Forest,Southern Highland Wines produces acredible eight white varietals andstyles, and five reds, under their S HW and Oldbury labels, the lattercrafted from the best fruit from their40ha of vineyards.
Winemaker Dominic Bosch usedskin contact, cold maceration and lowtemperature fermentation to create the2011 Oldbury Sauvignon Blanc, thatexudes a stylish personality with nicevarietal lychee, kiwi fruit, thyme, lem-ongrass, lime and asparagus aromasthat follow through with a smoothseamlessness on the palate.
If you’re into seafood, match thisone with banana prawns, oysters orpan-fried snapper, or try it with aherbed pork casserole, Japanesedishes or blue cheese; pay $28.
If you have trouble finding it lo-cally, it can be ordered online throughwww.shw.com.au, with freight costsadditional. Sutton Forest is 1.5hrsdrive from Sydney or Canberra;SHW’s Cellar Door is open daily10am-5pm and their restaurant forlunch Thursday to Monday.

At $19.99 this is a wine with abeautiful palate of forward Shirazblack-fruit flavours, making for anideal match with barbecued beefribs or grilled tuna.

●●●●● Tight fit may bring rewards in Perugia’s oddly-named Woman Kisser Lane
that ships its chocolates, candies andafter-dinner mints around the world.
Free tours of the factory, in thePerugian suburb of San Sisto are heldin specific languages daily, and in-clude a visit to the Museum of Choco-late, a video on how chocolate ismade, a guided walk along the pro-duction line, and a shop that sells thefull range of chocolates, candies, nougat and biscotti, T-shirts andmemorabilia.
And, yes, for chocoholics theguides offer free samples from silvertrays at different points throughout thetour.
And possibly the best time to visitPerugia is in October when the an-nual nine-day EuroChocolate Festi-val is held.
But be prepared for the crowds: itattracts more than one million tour-ists, and is one of the largest choco-late festivals in the world, with visi-tors able to buy such delights as choco-late-covered bananas, chocolate li-queur, chocolate moulds, and giantbricks of chocolate.
And wallow in a spa-full of choco-late.
But Luisa Spagnoli, the womanwhose talents spawned the town’sfame, didn’t stop at just chocolates.
She turned her business acumento the breeding of angora rabbits andin 1928 became the first person in theworld to turn the soft, silky fur intoshawls, boleros and fashion garmentsunder the name l’Angora Spagnoli.
Today some 100 Luisa Spagnolifashion stores are scattered aroundthe world, with headquarters firmlyentrenched in Perugia.
The townsfolk are also proud thatit was here that the famous Renais-sance painter Raphael learned histrade. He was apprenticed to anothermaster Perigino (who was born PietroVannucci, but took the name of thetown where he grew up).
Art lovers flock to Perugia’s Ex-change Guild to see one of the best-preserved Renaissance frescos inItaly, painted between 1498 and 1500by Perigino and some of his studentsincluding the young Raphael.
Art historians attribute the figureof Fortitude, seated on a cloud, as thework of Raphael – who, incidentally, the locals delight in telling visitors diedat an early age of 37 “from an over-indulgence in sex.”
Another must for anyone inter-ested in art is a visit to the town’sFranciscan Church to see a copy ofRaphael’s painting Entombment ofChrist.
The original caught the eye of Car-dinal Scipione Borghese, a wealthyand powerful nephew of Pope Paul V,while he was on a visit to Perugia in1607.
The painting wasn’t for sale butthe Cardinal had some men “acquireit,” and the original remains to thisday in the Borghese museum inRome.
And if you take a visit to Perugia, you just simply can’t miss a visit toVicolo Baciadonne (Woman KisserLane.)
But just remember – before youhead along the half-metre widelaneway, make sure you check whois coming the other way, and whetheror not you would enjoy the traditionalgreeting.
Carolinasusi Italian Tours have 3-week escorted tours to Umbria andTuscany every northern Spring andAutumn.
