■ The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Rangesregion is well known for one railway: the Puff-ing Billy line owed by a devoted PreservationSociety from Belgrave to Emerald andGembrook.

Puffing Billy connects with the Melbourneemtropolitan electric system at Belgrave, andattracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annu-ally.

But, also in the region, another local railwayis being developed. Track works are a familiarsight at Yarra Glen, one of the mid-points on theHealesville-Lilydale line which is being retsoredby volunteers.

Folk around Yarra Glen are becoming ex-cited about the growing growing tourism pros-pects for the line.

A public meeting is being held at the old YarraGlen Railway Station on TGhursday, June 9, toinform the community of the proposedredevleopment of the Yarra Glen Station.

The line has become popular for short railmotor trips, especially in the Tarrawarra area,between Yarra Glen and Healesville.

■ There are a couple of 19th centurydrawings on the wall of a guest cot-tage at the picturesque little Borrodellon the Mount winery in the CentralWest of NSW, that remarkably domore to embrace the history of thisproperty than could any number ofinfinitely researched words.

One is a simple apple. The other abunch of grapes. And between themthey symbolise the transition ofBorrodell from an apple orchard twodecades ago, to one of NSW’s mostdelightful – and successful – boutiquewineries today.

When he bought the property fortyyears ago, Borry Gartrell simplyjoined the scores of others on the richvolcanic foothills of Mount Canobolasnear Orange, growing apples, cher-ries, peaches, pears, nectarines andplums that would be snapped-up fortheir quality and flavours by not onlybuyers in Australia, but around theworld.

Then 20 years ago, Borry and otherorchardists discovered that the soilson which they were growing theirmuch-sought-after market fruits heldsome other rich secrets: tests provedthat they would be ideal for branchingout into grape-growing.

But Borry and co didn’t rush intobulldozing their orchards to replacethem with vineyards. Rather they care-fully re-structured their acreages toembrace what had proven bountifulin the past, to create even greater

■ Riesling has dropped off the twigas a wine of preference for many thesedays, which truly is a shame becauseit can be a delightful choice withdishes ranging from spicy Asian andMexican, to salty shellfish.

And if there’s a region that’s a greatproducer of Australian Rieslings, itsSouth Australia’s Clare Valley whoserich soils, warm days and cool nightsare a perfect start for some of our mostintensely-flavoured of these wines.

Leasingham have long producedRieslings of outstanding flavour fromthe Clare, their Bin range achievingsomething of icon status. The recently-released 2010 Bin 7 shows just whythe Clare and its sub-region ofWatervale have earned a reputationas one of our premium regions for thevarietal.

This is a wine that’s got loads ofRiesling lemon and lime characters,great minerality and a touch of spice.At $23 you’ll find it a good match withspicy Asian and Mexican foods, yet atthe same time it can be just as delight-ful with shellfish such as Morton BayBugs in a lemon and lime Beurre blanc.

One For Lunch■ Another Clare Valley maker,Tim Adams and wife PamGoldsack have been makingwines in the Valley under theirown label for a quarter century,and while producing a range ofwonderful varietals and blends itis their Tim Adams Shiraz that’sone of their great mainstays. They’ve just released the 2008that’s made from fruit from a num-ber of mainly dryland vineyards –vineyards that are used to hardconditions, and certainly experi-enced how tough times can be,with the 2008 vintage culminatingin temperatures up to 38-degrees(just under 100F.) This is an elegant dry winewith lovely red-berry flavours andsubtle oak. Pay $28.50 and enjoywith Steak au Poivre – or Asian-basted BBQ pork spareribs. Orkeep it in the cellar to develop toits full potential over the next de-cade …

bounties in the future with a mix oforchard fruits and grapes – not for thetable, but for winemaking.

Publisher John Rozentals who pro-duces an interesting e-zine calledOzBabyBoomers for the active over-50s, came upon Borrodell on theMount on a recent research tripthrough inland NSW, and has en-thused ever since over its past, itspresent… and, as a wine writer of noteamongst his many other activities, itsfuture.(See www.ozbabyboomers.com.au)

Because, Rozentals says, Borryand wife Gaye Stuart-Nairne are turn-ing their Sauvignon Blanc,Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet,Gewurztraminer and Shiraz into someof Australia’s most rewarding still andsparkling wines.

And as well they’ve two guest cab-ins and two suites that nestle amongtheir trees and vines, together with arestaurant they call Sisters Rock inwhich the treasures from the kitchenare first-class and carefully designedto match the season: right now thatmeans entrées of tandoori fillet of wildrabbit or confit of duck leg, and maincourses such as slow-roast pork bellyor loin of local venison.

On top of all this, Borry and Gayehave also just successfully establishedthe rare black truffle on the slopes ofMount Canobolas just up the hill fromtheir restaurant — somewhat to thedelight of Chef Alan Meaney, whorelishes using local produce and saysyou can’t get much more local than“just up the hill.”

Not that Borry has neglected hisapples: in fact he’s now got more than170 varieties, including many classi-fied as “heirlooms.”

He swears they’re the bane of hislife, because his interest in them de-tracts from the emphasis he’d like toplace on the rest of he and Gaye’sbusiness, but guests realise from hisexuberance as he hands out samples,that he’s absolutely devoted to hispommes.

And that he’s also a dab hand atturning the juice of those into a veryrespectable cider.

And then there are his plums.Guests note that Borry gets a far-awaymuse in his eye as the late eveningconversation turns from his wines tohis cider… and possibly one day aplum brandy.
