Scientists have known about free radicals for some time. Free radicals are a result of metabolism; in other words every living person and every living animal produces free radicals. One can compare free radicals living beings produce to the exhaust produced by a combustion engine. As long as a combustion engine is running it is producing exhaust; similarly, as long as we are living we will be producing free radicals. A free radical is any atom or molecule with a single unpaired electron as an outer shell. Technically a free radical is a molecule or atom missing an electron and, since it is missing an electron, its chemical makeup demands it find an electron to fill the void. Electrons are easy to come by. They are available in adjacent molecules or adjacent tissue. It takes a millionth of a second to solve the problem. To solve their problem, free radicals reach out and grab an electron from a surrounding molecule, usually from within the same cell or from a surrounding cell. When it steals the electron from the adjacent molecule, it impacts the molecule. It’s just a little effect—but it’s effected nonetheless; and when the damaged cell reproduces itself and forms a new cell, the new cell is not quite the same as the old cell. It’s a little less robust, it’s not quite the same. And this is how the aging process works. It is estimated there are

approximately four new free radicals created in every cell in our bodies every second. Since our bodies have approximately 36 trillion cells, there are hundreds of trillions of free radicals being produced in our bodies every minute—a constant barrage of free radicals can impact our bodies over time.

It stands to reason if we can reduce the number of free radical transactions in our bodies, we may slow the aging process.

The life of a free radical is about one millionth of a second. It takes about that much time for one molecule to rob another molecule of an electron. As soon as the robbery is complete, the original molecule is no longer a free radical, but the molecule from which the electron was robbed is now missing an electron and has become a free radical and will reach out and steal an electron from an adjacent molecule. Then that molecule will steal an electron from an adjacent molecule and so forth, creating a cascading chain reaction until a free radical meets up with an antioxidant. An antioxidant molecule sacrifices itself to stop the

chain reaction. When a free radical steals an electon from an antioxidant, the antioxidant molecule does not steal an electron from an adjacent molecule, and so the chain reaction stops. That’s why nutritionists constantly advise us to make sure there is an adequate supply of antioxidants within our blood at all times. Researchers have indicated free radicals may also be responsible for other serious health problems. We will never be able to shut down all free radical activity; that is simply not possible. Metabolism, digesting food, and breathing will all produce free radicals. But if we can stop the chain reaction, if we can stop that first free radical from creating a second and a third and then thousands and ultimately trillions of free radicals, we can hope to slow down the impact of free radicals.

Like a single free radical, a single raindrop seems to do little. The effect of trillions of raindrops over time.

The impact of free radicals throughout the body is random. Trillions of molecules are affected every second. But the impact of any single free radical is minimal.

While a single raindrop on the rock face of a mountain has no affect—and even a single rainshower has no perceptible effect—a million rainstorms begin to take a toll. Come back a million years later and you can see over time, raindrops have begun to change the landscape. Several million years later, the mountain is eroded and ceases to exist. So it is with free radicals. A single free radical has no perceptible effect, but trillions of free radicals—over time—may cause the aging process. By reducing the amount of free radicals, we can improve our health and slow down the aging process.

A closer look at the long-term effects of FREE RADICALS.

IMPROVED

Heart Health: the measured resultsCholesterol and triglyceride levels decreased; documenting the pack may help:

• Maintain healthy cholesterol levels • Maintain healthy triglyceride levels

Blood pressure—both systolic and diastolic—remained stable for those already in a healthy range and reduced for those studied with elevated but normal levels. The major metabolite responsible for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels—nitric oxide, a known vasodilator—nearly doubled; documenting the pack may help:

• Maintain healthy blood pressure • Boost the healthy production of

circulating nitric oxide in the blood

Though further research is in progress, the Peak Performance Pack has demonstrated measurable benefits in categories of holistic health.

Freiburg Study: Peak Performance Pack delivers results.

IMPROVED

Cellular Health: the measured resultsAs participants continued taking the Peak Performance Pack, their ability to efficiently produce energy increased. To exert the same amount of physical effort to perform physical activity, heart rate decreased, and all cells were able to produce the required amount of energy without demanding additional oxygen. At the same time, we observed the spike of free radicals typically accompanies physical exertion decreased. Additionally, inflammatory activity decreased while resistance to inflammation improved; documenting the pack may help:

• Support efficient cellular energy utilization

• Maintain healthy free radical balance in the body

• Promote a healthy inflammatory response

• Boost the healthy production of circulating nitric oxide in the blood

IMPROVED

Metabolic Health: the measured resultsThe spike of blood glucose after a high-carbohydrate meal lowered after participants started taking the Peak Performance Pack, as did the body’s insulin response; documenting the pack may help:

• Support normal insulin response • Your body more efficiently manage

blood sugar

do not overstate or

results of the Freiburg

Study.

The Freiburg Study suggests using the Peak Performance Pack will help our bodies operate, without the effect of excessive free radicals, and may help us stay well.

The battle with free radicals. There is simply no way we can shut down all free radical activity in our bodies. However, reducing the total number of free radicals is a very worthwhile endeavor. It may slow down the aging process, after all, the fewer free radicals we have, the better. However, reducing the likelihood is just that. It is not absolute prevention. And it is not a cure. We simply hope to lengthen our lives and stay well. We believe the Freiburg Study is the first time it has been documented that a nutritional supplement has been shown to reduce free radicals in humans.

A Marketing Executive who uses the information from the Freiburg Study to suggest the Peak Performance Pack will prevent or cure any disease will be found to be outside the bounds of our Marketing Executive Agreement, and the Marketing Executive will be disciplined, up to and including termination.

The Freiburg Study provides evidence that the Peak Performance Pack may reduce free radical activity in our bodies.

Looking to the future. The Freiburg Study was conducted on only 48 subjects. There is no guarantee everyone will experience the same results as the test subjects did. Many more studies need to be done in order to get a more complete picture of how the entire population will respond to the Peak Performance Pack. In the next two years, Melaleuca will complete several additional studies, with many more subjects, in order to more fully understand the promising benefits of the Peak Performance Pack. We will continue to make data available to the public. For now, we know through proper nutrition, exercise, and a healthy diet complemented by the Peak Performance Pack, we can hope to slow down the aging process. But we should be careful not to suggest the Peak Performance Pack will prevent, treat, or cure these diseases.

It’s all about staying well! We wish you well on your journey to good health!

Results increase our responsibility for accuracy in our message.

May improve wellness, but not a cure.None of the 48 subjects in the Freiburg Study had been diagnosed with any disease. We cannot and should not represent that it cured them of any disease. To do so would be irresponsible, wrong, and, in fact, illegal. COFEPRIS, appropriately, does not, should not, and will not allow such claims. There is no evidence suggesting the Peak Performance Pack will cure or prevent any disease. Again, to claim it does would be irresponsible, inaccurate, and illegal. Persons who have been diagnosed with any disease or suspect they may have a degenerative disease should consult with their doctor. They should take their doctor’s advice. No one should ever suggest the Peak Performance Pack should be substituted for any medication prescribed by a doctor.

Scientists weigh in on the Freiburg Study results! After 22 years of research within various divisions of Procter & Gamble, from Cincinnati to Brussels, Belgium, Dr. Nasser Fredj* is no stranger to the world of product testing and development. Yet when he saw the conclusions of the research on the Peak Performance Pack, Dr. Fredj, who is now the Vice President of Melaleuca’s Research and Development Department, was taken back. “Going into the study, we felt really good about the product formulation, which was based on a lot of research about the different supplements,” he says. “But what surprised us was the synergy—what all those supplements did together.”

What makes the effects of the Peak Performance Pack truly intriguing is the fact that they don’t need to be limited to the laboratory. Customers from all walks of life can begin using the Peak Performance Pack today and document and report their own results. To give you more details on what this research could mean, we sat down with Dr. Fredj and his two colleagues, Dr. Alex Rabovsky* and Dr. Begonia Ho*. Here’s a little of what they told us about the difference the Peak Performance Pack might make for you.

“In my experience, I have never seen any results reported on the benefits of any supplement after one hour!”

Metabolic HealthWhen the study on the Peak Performance Pack began, Dr. Begonia Ho* was still working at Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, where she collected more than 12 years of experience in product research. She came to Melaleuca only a short while ago, and when she did, she too was amazed at the emerging results of the Freiburg Study. The big shocker was the Peak Performance Pack seemed to lower the response to a high-carbohydrate meal by increasing insulin sensitivity and allowing the body to process more energy in healthy individuals. “The metabolic benefits, to me, were surprising,” says Dr. Ho. When you consume something high in carbohydrates, the hormone insulin tells your cells to absorb the energy from that food. But when your body is constantly secreting insulin, your cells become less sensitive to it and stop obeying the signal to absorb the energy from carbohydrates. When that happens, your blood sugar rapidly increases (as those carbs circulate in your blood instead of being absorbed), kicking off a number of negative physiological conditions that collectively contribute to metabolic syndrome. “Metabolic syndrome is not actually a disease, but part of your body’s reaction to excess calories and

lack of activity,” Dr. Fredj* says. “When we eat too much glucose, our bodies have a lot of wonderful mechanisms to handle it. But every time your body does this, you pay a huge price.” In the Peak Performance study, test subjects who ate a bread roll high in carbs had predictably high blood sugar. But when those same test subjects later used the Peak Performance Pack and then ate another roll, their blood sugar spike was lower—indicating the cells were better utilizing the glucose. “With the Peak Performance Pack, the cells are producing energy much more efficiently,” Dr. Rabovsky* says. “While we do not know the exact reason, we theorize the cells aren’t as distracted in fighting free radicals, so they’re better at converting glucose to the kind of energy cells use: ATP or adenosine triphosphate.” Those results were not limited to people who

struggle with their metabolism and weight. There was good news for athletes and regular exercisers. “One hour after taking the Peak Performance Pack, subjects displayed a reduction in heart rate during exercise!” Dr. Fredj says. “Taking the Peak Performance Pack one hour before exercise may help your body’s systems be more efficient during exercise.”

Inflammatory HealthInflammation, Dr. Rabovsky points out, comes from the word “inflame” or “to light up with flames.” Inflammation is always present in your body in one way or another. It’s a natural part of your immune system, and even digesting and processing food releases free radicals that may cause inflammation. “Inflammation is called a ‘cascade process’ because it sets off a chain of events in your body,” Dr. Fredj says. “Your body has three different mechanisms for dealing with inflammation. Each of these three mechanisms blocks this cascade process in a different way.” Dr. Ho relates it to a war zone: Your cells are constantly in combat with the enemy, but there’s often collateral damage or “friendly fire,” as she calls it. “Your body has natural antioxidants in

the form of enzymes to combat inflammation,” she says. “But sometimes you need additional antioxidants from your diet.” The Freiburg study results indicated the body’s cells appear to be processing energy better in subjects who use the Peak Performance Pack. One reason, Dr. Fredj surmises, is the cells aren’t focused on doing battle with free radicals. As Dr. Rabovsky explains, “If our cells are less distracted with fighting free radicals, they can focus more on producing energy. That’s apparently why people could do the same amount of exercise with the Peak Performance Pack at a less-elevated heart rate.” If you’re already struggling with your weight, having cells that can process more energy can make a big difference for your health. But the results weren’t limited to those individuals. It’s

an advantage for anyone who uses the Peak Performance Pack.* “The results are positive across the board,” Dr. Rabovsky says. “We hope performance will improve for everybody who uses the Peak Performance Pack.”

Heart HealthFor the study, the Melaleuca research team partnered with Dr. Bruno Fink, a member of the Society of Free Radical Biology and Medicine from Germany. At the beginning of the study, Dr. Fink questioned the measurable power of supplements. “He had the typical European attitude of, ‘We don’t need vitamins,’” Dr. Rabovsky says. “But after the study concluded and results became more clear, Dr. Fink’s attitude toward supplements changed.” Halfway through the study, he actually approached Melaleuca to find out how he could get some for his own use. He is now using the Peak Performance Pack daily. Intriguing was the broad spectrum of benefits experienced by the study participants. “What the Freiburg study found is the Peak Performance Pack may help maintain healthy levels of cholesterol and triglycerides” says Dr. Fredj. These benefits might start with Omega-3 EPA Boost, ProvexCV,® and Vitality Multivitamin & Mineral™ powered by Oligo,® but Dr. Fredj was quick to point out that it’s the interplay, the synergy of all of these proprietary supplements that makes it all work. A healthy inflammatory response promotes healthier blood vessels, and healthier blood vessels do a better job of carrying micronutrients throughout your body. Dr. Ho explains, “When I talk about the Peak Performance Pack, I draw a diagram of a human body and then overlay it with all the veins and arteries to show the complexity and detail of the circulatory system. Your circulatory system runs throughout your entire body, and when your heart and blood vessels work properly, every system in your body—your muscles, your bones, your brain, everything—benefits.”

This is just the beginning. In the months ahead, Melaleuca’s Research and Development Department will spend millions to do more research on the Peak Performance Pack to examine additional effects. The team is optimistic about what they’ll see, but they’re already fully confident in recommending every customer begin using the Peak Performance Pack.

Participants in the Freiburg Study took the Peak

Performance Pack supplements as directed every morning

and every evening. There is no evidence that taking the supplements only once daily

will produce the same results.

The Peak Performance Pack has benefits for everyone.

In April 2014, Melaleuca commissioned the Freiburg Study to determine the measurable impact of nutritional supplements on the human body. It was conducted with 48 healthy human subjects of various ages. To be included in the study, participants were evaluated on their cholesterol measurements, triglycerides, blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI. As with the us general population, half exhibited elevated levels but were still within a normal range.

The test used a collection of Melaleuca’s daily nutritional supplements known as the Peak Performance Pack.

Testing was conducted before taking the Peak Performance Pack, one hour after taking the supplements, after taking the supplements for 6 weeks consistently, and after taking the supplements for 12 weeks consistently.

The Freiburg Study Preliminary Findings

Results Key:

Indicates an extremely significant change from the baseline

(higher than 99.9% confidence).

Study ProtocolThe Freiburg Study was conducted with 48 healthy human subjects of various ages. None of the test subjects had been diagnosed with any disease prior to the study. None were taking any type of medication. However, according to their health markers, 24 of the subjects had elevated levels—in blood pressure, cholesterol, or body weight, but all still within what doctors would consider a normal range. The other 24 subjects had healthy markers closer to what would be considered ideal.

48TEST SUBJECTS

24 had metabolic syndrome

24 had healthy markers

MethodologyThe methodology of the study consisted of taking blood from each individual subject. Blood samples were tested for 25 different parameters, including free radical activity, cholesterol levels, blood lipid levels, C-reactive protein (which is a good indicator of heart health), glucose levels and insulin response, and inflammation.

Heart rate and blood pressure were also recorded.

Measurements were taken before and immediately after a specific prescribed amount of exercise. Subjects were asked to come to the laboratory having fasted for eight hours. The tests went on for a period of 12 weeks. Each subject was asked to not change anything about their lifestyle or diet during those 12 weeks, except to take the supplements given to them.

FIRST, to establish each person’s baseline health metrics, extensive testing was conducted separately on each subject prior to taking the supplements.

The supplements were administered along with a small roll of bread to aid digestion and evaluate the body’s insulin response.

SECOND, the same measure-ments were taken one, two, and three hours after the subject first took the supplements. This was done with all 48 subjects.

THIRD, subjects were asked to take the supplements every day for a period of 6 weeks and return to the laboratory, where the identical tests were repeated.

FINALLY, the subjects were asked to continue taking the supplement for an additional 6 weeks and then return again to undergo the same blood tests.

The results of these tests can be studied on the following pages.

EXERCISE-INDUCED ROS

Free Radicals and Oxygen Metabolism: Resting vs. ExerciseIn the study, free radicals were measured as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). After one hour, study subjects recorded a 10% reduction in ROS during exercise. After six weeks of supplementation, the 48 subjects recorded an average of a 20.7% reduction in ROS while resting. This number dropped to an average 25.9% reduction in ROS during exercise.

Mitochondria are the energy centers of the cell. Free radicals interfere with mitochondrial function. A reduction in free radicals in mitochondria increases the efficiency of energy production.
