Unsuk Chin - Six Piano Études (Premiere Recording) (b. 1961)
György Ligeti - Musica Ricercata (1923 - 2006)
Sofia Gubaidulina - Musical Toys (b. 1931)
Sofia Gubaidulina, Unsuk Chin and György Ligeti, giants of the world of
20th/21st century music, wrote extensively for every possible medium.
While acknowled- ging their compositional mastery, I also hope to illuminate
a different facet found in all three works in this recording - a facet less
monumental but more personal and elusive. Through my encounter with them,
I have come to discover a sense of humour that binds these works collectively;
once discovered, this quirky presence is difficult to stifle. Like a child playing with toys, one would listen with wit and curiosity through the labyrinth of 31
tracks. The child’s play here, however, is sophisticated. These composers take their musical toys seriously (all three works were, after all, written when their
creators were in their mature 30s) and it is by participating in this serious game
that the performer works, or more appropriately plays, with a
sense of mischief and irony.
2
So, should there be an order of play(fulness)? Can one toy with this recording approaching it from
different points? Here is one of my favourites:
The above merely serves as a uide and should in no way restrict the listener’s journey
through the recording. I find joy in discovering connections between movements, be
them linear or confrontational, and I hope the listener will find many different ways to
discover the colourful and beguiling intricacies of Sofia Gubaidulina, Unsuk Chin and
Gyorgy Ligeti.

Uniquely, the piano repertoire is full of musically significant didactic works
based on technical facets of performance and/or composition. It is a tradition
which stretches from Bach’s keyboard collections, encompassing works for
young players like Schumann’s Album for the Young and Bartók’s Mikrokosmos,
to the technically demanding concert études of the 19th century. Each of the
pieces here displays a different aspect of this didactic tradition.
Sofia Gubaidulina, Unsuk Chin and György Ligeti, born respectively in the
Tartar Republic, South Korea and Transylvania, were all separated from the
main centres of western music. For Chin it was a question of geographical
and cultural distance but for Ligeti and Gubaidulina there were the stringent
limitations imposed by communist regimes to contend with. That all three
composers moved to Germany to live and work is significant but certainly
does not indicate a desire for traditionalism.
Musical Toys (1969), like all of Gubaidulina’s solo keyboard music, dates from
relatively early in her career and before the time when her music became well
known in the west. This is a set of pieces located in the world of the young
student, each piece having a title redolent of childhood, often referring to
magical or fairy tale elements. As with much of her music there is a sensitivity
to the world of sounds, and many of the titles refer to musical instruments and
birds. These are very clearly musical toys.
Despite the relative simplicity of the pieces, Gubaidulina uses a rich palette
of harmonic sounds from the bare fifths which punctuate the Song of the
Fisherman to simple triads in The Woodpecker, spiky added-note harmony
in The Drummer and cluster chords in Mechanical Accordion and The
Trumpeter in the Forest. Melodies similarly range from quite simple modal
writing in Song of the Fisherman to the richly chromatic lines of April Day and
The Elk Clearing which use all 12 notes.
A number of the pieces are explicitly pictorial - the tapping repeated note of The
Woodpecker and the soft bell sounds of Sleigh with Little Bells. Some mimic
a musical style, like the boogie-woogie bass of A Bear Playing the Double
Bass and the Black Woman and the Shostakovich-like march of The Drummer.
Others are more abstract, or focus on a particular technical device as in The
Echo which uses the harmonic resonance achieved when keys are depressed
silently in the right hand and loud, short notes are played in the left hand.
Unsuk Chin’s Études (1995 - 2003) come from the other extreme of this
tradition, the virtuoso concert étude, a favourite of the composer-pianists of
the 19th century and a genre renewed in spectacular fashion in the last years
of the 20th century by Ligeti. Chin’s set of six pieces was begun in 1995 and
completed and revised in 2003.
The fifth piece can serve as an introduction to the soundworld of the whole
set. Its title Toccata might be appropriate for any of the pieces, with their
fast figurations and constant sense of ‘touch’. It begins simply: a single line,
implying a straightforward harmony, divided between the two hands in a
regular pulse but with irregular groupings and accent patterns. From this
opening, the music branches out and becomes a continuous stream of notes.
The initial pattern is never really lost but is also never quite regained. Like a
snowball, it picks up further material as it gathers momentum: more sustained
notes to make a line, chordal punctuations, and rhythms which conflict with
the basic pulse. It ends with a giant ‘X’ shape with simultaneous cascades of
notes going from top to bottom and bottom to top of the keyboard. Chin’s
work frequently shows her interest in non-western music but here there is a
very western approach to development and growth from a simple initial idea.
Non-western elements are clearer in the first piece, In C, which follows
Debussy’s example in invoking the gamelan with piano textures, using different
registers to create layers of sound akin to the resonance of different sizes
of gong. Natural harmonics are built around the pitch C, to create complex
sonorities, with a slow moving bass line and more filigree upper levels.
While in In C the different layers of sound are always clear, those in Sequenzen
are darker toned and more densely packed. After an introduction using a
whole tone pitch collection which gradually accumulates energy, the piece
has an arch-like shape. Two different fast textures are characterised by
irregular rhythmic groupings, first a tolling repeated note with simultaneous
ostinato-like figurations and then left hand patterns punctuated by ascending
gestures in the right hand. A more chordal section at the middle of the arch
provides some respite from the manic activity and predominantly lower
registers of the rest of the movement.
5
Both Scherzo ad libitum and Scalen use a virtuosic continuous pulse but
irregularly grouped in the manner of Bartók’s Bulgarian rhythms; in both
pieces there is a constant sense of the musical material being completely
consistent and yet in a state of constant flux. The music has a mechanical
precision but also the freedom of fantasy.
The final piece Grains relates to Chin’s experience in the electronic studio
and is somewhat distinct from the others in avoiding the moto perpetuo
style of figuration. Instead continuity is challenged by textures fragmented
into isolated gestures, the most insistent being the repeated G sharp which
is virtually omnipresent. In some ways it is a highly developed form of
Gubaidulina’s Woodpecker and perhaps also a relative of some of Bartók’s
nocturnal soundscapes but more than anything draws attention the very
mechanism of the piano itself. The piece is not pictorial but like the others in
the set delights in building complex structures from simple materials.
Musica ricercata is a set of compositional studies, written at a time (1951-53)
when Ligeti had no hope of hearing performances of music which challenged
the Soviet orthodoxies. By the time of the first performance (1969) he was living
in the west and an established figure in contemporary music.
In order to achieve his goal of producing a new type of music, Ligeti went
back to the bare essentials and experimented with building compositional
strategies from nothing. It is not surprising that he turned to the 12 notes of
the chromatic scale as a basic tool, but his approach was completely different
from the Second Viennese serialism, which at this stage he seems to have
known little about.
The eleven pieces each use a different collection of notes - the first using just
two pitches, the second, three and so on, till the final piece uses all 12 notes.
Ligeti’s desire to start from first principles can be seen easily in the first piece,
which is built almost entirely from the note A, the second pitch, D, appearing
only at the very end. With such limits to the pitch structure it is often the
textural and rhythmic aspects of the composition which take the burden of
the musical discourse.
Each piece has its own character. The third may use only four pitches, but
they are the notes of the C major and minor triads, and contrast with the
preceding piece made entirely out of semitones (E sharp, F sharp, G). The
final piece is an elaborate fugal structure using a 12 note theme. Rhythm is
often used to define character, whether in the barrel-organ waltz of No. 4 or
the insistent two bar rhythmic pattern of No. 8.
It is perhaps not surprising that Ligeti’s new musical world still had strong
echoes of Bartók; it would only be in Apparitions (1958-9) and Atmosphères
(1961) that he would truly find the new musical horizons he was seeking.
However it is the re-emergence of this Bartókian inheritance in the very
different context of his later music which contributes to making his piano
Études such a landmark, initiating a renewed interest in the genre by
composers such as Unsuk Chin.

Repubblica Tatara, in Sud Corea e in Transilvania, lontano dai centri principali
musica guadagnasse notorietà in occidente.
Accordion) e de Il trombettiere nella foresta (The Trumpeter in the Forest).
Canzone del pescatore (Song of the Fisherman) alle ricche linee cromatiche
di Giorno d’Aprile (April Day) e La radura dell’alce (The Elk Clearing), in cui
(Sleigh with Little Bells).
(A Bear Playing the Double Bass and the Black Woman) e la marcia in stile
Šostakovic in Il Tamburino.
7
Mentre in In C i diversi strati sonori restano sempre chiari, in Sequenzen
diesis ripetuto, virtualmente onnipresente.
All’epoca della prima esecuzione
sembra sapesse ben poco.

Jahrhunderts. Jedes der hier
vorliegenden Stücke offenbart unterschiedliche Aspekte dieser Lehrtradition.
Die Tatarin Sofia Gubaidulina, die Südkoreanerin Unsuk Chin und György
Ligeti, geboren in Transsylvanien, waren schon aufgrund ihrer Herkunft
sozialistischen Regime konfrontiert waren.
in The Woodpecker, außerdem durch hinzugefügte Töne entstehende
spitze Harmonien wie in The Drummer sowie Clusterakkorde in Mechanical
Accordion und The Trumpeter in the Forest.
The Elk Clearing, welche alle zwölf Töne verwenden.
The Woodpecker und die sanften Glockenschläge in Sleigh with Little Bells.
in A Bear Playing the Double Bass und The Black Woman, oder etwa der
an Schostakowitsch erinnernde Marsch in The Drummer. Andere wiederum
9
bogenförmigen Aufbau an.
Ton A aufbaut.
