In this edition Issue 13 Spring 2015 On 21 st April 2015 The Automotive Council UK successfully held the Low Volume Premium Product Manufacturers Event at Williams F1 Conference Centre, with the purpose of attracting new suppliers into the automotive sector through cross sector collaboration. The Event, a joint collaboration between Industry Forum, The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd (SMMT),The British Marine Federation (BMF), The Aerospace, Defence, Securtiy and Space Industries (ADS) and The Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), saw invitations sent out to association members who have specialist craft skills in areas such as leather wrapping, leather stitching, wood craft skills, wood finishes, technical painting, chroming, carbon fibre and many more, inviting them to register their interest to attend the event and meet with representatives from premier automotive OEMs such as Jaguar LandRover, Aston Martin, Bentley Motors and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Over 75 companies registered their interest to attend the event with 60 companies being selected by representatives from the OEMs for a series of fifteen minute ‘one to one’ meetings where each supplier company could introduce itself to the OEM and the possibility of a future business relationship being explored. The event began with presentations from Aston Martin, Bentley Motors, Jaguar LandRover and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars where each OEM laid out their requirements from the suppliers and the opportunities that exist with them for a new relationship to develop. These presentations were followed by a presentation from Mark Garner, Senior Engineer at Industry Forum, who, after consultation with the OEMs, had drawn up a set of guidelines aimed at helping new suppliers into the automotive industry. After serving my time as a mechanical engineer I was taken on at one of their chemical sites where I stayed in a maintenance role for the next 6 years. I soon realised that there were other opportunities available in the local area and I moved into a role within an edible oil manufacturing company. It was here that I first had a taste of Continuous Improvement when the company involved the technicians in a CI training programme. I was hooked but it wasn’t until much later in my career that I realised how the topics of CI and change suited my skill set. Instead, I moved in to a role teaching apprentices. I joined an organisation called Humberside Engineering Training Association (HETA) in 2004 as a lecturer teaching the BTEC National Certificate in Engineering. To say I was thrown in at the deep end is an understatement but it was the best way to learn how to teach and I thoroughly enjoyed helping young people develop and being able to pass on my knowledge of engineering to others. I was soon promoted and was eventually in charge of a team of lecturers. From HETA I moved to Howdens Joinery as a Training Manager which allowed me to gain much more experience in a manufacturing environment. Whilst at Howdens I was responsible for implementing a large transformation Meet the Team... 1 4 programme within manufacturing which involved developing a number of people at all levels in Lean and CI. It was here that I first encountered Industry Forum (IF) as I used IF to deliver the training across our 2 manufacturing sites. I soon realised that the engineers from IF were the best in their field and it reignited my love of Lean. My renewed interest in CI saw me progressing in Howdens to the role of Commercial Continuous Improvement Manager, where I was responsible for Supply Chain Development within the purchasing function. Again this was a great learning curve for me and I got the opportunity to travel all over the world helping key suppliers improve in order to leverage cost down opportunities for Howdens. For its fourth consecutive year Industry Forum exhibited at Maintec, this year showcasing its capabilities in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).

To help explain the potential benefits that TPM can bring to an organisation, Industry Forum showcased its new iPad app. The app enabled delegates to test their knowledge of TPM in given scenarios and to discuss with Industry Forum TPM experts the rationale of pillar implementation and the effects that implementation would have.

If you would like to know more information on Total Productive Maintenance visit the Industry Forum website, www.industryforum.co.uk

Industry Forum have launched a new Module G VDA 6.3 Certified Auditor 2 day Refresher Training Course in response to the changes implemented by VDA.

VDA now require that all certified VDA 6.3 auditors (not internal auditors) must have completed a minimum of five supplier audits in a three year period with one of the audits covering sections P2 to P7.

Auditors that have not completed the minimum number of audits are required by VDA to undertake some refresher training (Module G).

Industry forum will be running a series of Module G courses throughout 2015, details of which can be found on the Industry Forum website, https://www.industryforum.co.uk/training/vda-6-3-process-audit-module-g/

Maintec 2015 a great success!

Industry Forum becomes a Channel Partner with APICS supply chain management

Industry Forum is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Channel Partner status by APICS, the premier professional association for supply chain and operations management.

On receiving the accreditation from Radhika Jensen of APICS, Andy Lane, Marketing & Business Development Director, said “This partnership helps to strengthen Industry Forum’s supply chain management offerings by enabling it to now offer a range of solutions from shop floor interventions through to globally recognised professional qualifications through the APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) qualification.”

The CPIM programme takes an in-depth look at the production and inventory activities within the internal operations of a company and provides a comprehensive view of materials management. CPIM qualified employees can help to contribute to a successful bottom line of companies.

The qualification is broken down in to five modules, each completed separately and awarded via an exam. The five modules are:1. Basics of Supply Chain Management2. Master Planning of Resources3. Detailed Scheduled and Planning4. Execution and Control of Operations5. Strategic Management of Resources

Industry Forum will be running an ‘open’ CPIM programme at its Learning Centre later in 2015. For more details, or to reserve your place, please email [email protected] putting APICS CPIM in the subject line.

Best Practice Programme launched

In November 2015, Industry Forum will host a group of 20 delegates in Japan, to experience and understand Best Practice first-hand.

Now in its eleventh year, The Industry Forum Best Practice Programme gives delegates the opportunity to join subject matter experts to explore, visit, observe and understand Japan’s most effective manufacturing and process operations. The Programme enables delegates to participate in lectures and shop floor visits and learn from leading experts and practitioners in Kaizen and TPM.

The Best Practice Programme is specifically developed for large manufacturing and engineering businesses, typically within the automotive and aeronautical supply chains. Delegates over the last eleven years range from managers to C-level board executives.

For more information on the Programme, or to reserve your place, please visit www.industryforum.co.uk. A 10% discount fee applies to those who book before 31st May 2015.

of funding mechanisms currently available in the automotive and aerospace industries, presented by Dr Chris Owen of Industry Forum, and Malcolm James of Sharing in Growth respectively. The final presentation of the day was made by NatWest who illustrated the different types of funding

available to small businesses with the message that the banks are ‘here to help’.

Industry Forum is pleased to announce the launch if its new blog feature to the Industry Forum website.

The blog, written by Christine Brown, an accomplished Engineer with 17 years experience in manufacturing and consulting, aims to tackle issues from the ‘shop floor’ perspective, giving a practical insight and view on topics that people face themselves challenged by on a daily basis.

Commenting on the launch of the blog, Christine said “I am really excited to have the opportunity to share the knowledge and practical deployment tips I have accumulated over the years, with people who are looking to make improvements in their manufacturing environment. Not only do blogs allow you to put

across your information, but they are great opportunity to engage in two way communication with like minded individuals and build a beneficial working relationship..”

Feedback from delegates on the day was positive with delegates requesting that the Automotive Council organise future collaborative events in the near future.

“Excellent, was surprised that a single introductory meeting could be so successful!”
