Table of ContentsMeet the Designer My name is Hannah Nix, and I am a Sophomore in the Interior Architecture Accelerated Master’s Program. I am Guyanese-American and have lived in South Florida all my life. I chose this career path because it was a fusion of all the things I was interested in- art, graphic design, and environmental science. With each project I hope to acquire more knowledge that will help me create better designs.

Project Profile
Miami Ironside Named after proximity to the Florida Eastcoast Railroad.
Italian Inspired Warehouse Village.
60+ showrooms, galleries, fitness studios, offices, and shops.
Located in Little River, near Miami’s Upper East Side.
Biodynamic and Sustainable site.
Business Hours: 8am-11pm.
Ofer MizrahiFounder and Visionary of Miami Ironside.
Leader in Miami real estate.
Made Ironside an attractive place for creative tenants and clients.
GeneratorThis project started with an idea of a stamp. The materials used in this creative artpiece were watercolor, graphic tape, and ink pen. These mediums were also used in the diagrams that analyzed the site of Miami Itonside.
Location Diagram
Edge CondtionsBiscayne Boulevard connects Ironside to the rest of Miami.
Site is located to the north of Little Haiti.
Florida Eastcoast Railroad lies directly west of Ironside.
Shares NE 4th court with a residential neighborhood. IssuesIsolated from traffic on NE 79th and Biscayne.
Bordering neighborhood does not fit Ironside clientele.
SolutionsAdvertising along 79th Street and Biscayne.
Hold public events to increase residential interest.

Sketches to convey different approaches.
Denote EntrancesMark entrances with a memorable graphic that will inform visitors as to where they are on the site.
Graphics allude to something they will see beyond the entrance, such as Berlin Wall pieces or the Bocce Court.
Specific Solutions
Clear CirculationUse ground patterns to guide visitors on a clear path.
Patterns will be “stamped” into the concrete using iron and other industrial materials.
Noticable NodesDraw attention to intersections.
Create a checkered pattern using materials sold on site once a node has been reached.
Bamboo PromenadeLeads to piazza.Main pathway from the primary parking lot.
IssuesDull, unintersting.
SolutionsRefurbish, re-design.
Bocce Ball Court Recreational area for clients.
IssuesIsolated, hidden.
SolutionsClarify path to bocce court.
Rainbow EucalyptusLargest collection at Ironside.
IssuesScattered, random.
SolutionsTurn into wayfinding instrument.
Ironside Garden ShowcaseThe main entrance.
IssuesHidden, overgrown.
SolutionsClear foliage, highlight entryway from 76th St.
Concept Statement In order to create a seamless wayfinding experience around Miami Ironside, environmental cues and graphics will be incorporated into the site.
This will be achieved by stamping a unique checkered pattern into the floor to mark entrances and direct wayfinding.
Additionaly, metalic lines will be imbedded into the concrete to denote major nodes- where they will rise up to become sculptural landmarks.

To better understand how wayfinding is implemented in other places around the world, I searched on Pinterest, a site where images are shared and linked to the original source. I came across many floor conditions that used metalic materials and enbedded them into the ground. I also looked at checkered patterns to see how they could be used in an urban landscape.
What is an node? An area of heightened activity along a circulation route; special places along a path.
Entrance Model A checkered pattern resembling Ironside’s logo.
Materials: various metals such as iron, brass, and copper will be used to enforce the industrial aesthetic Ironside promotes.
Node Model Embedded metal lines lead to nodes on site.
The color of these lines will directly correspond to the entrance.

Schematic Design Scheme 1: Italian Scheme 2: Artisan
Garden WallOffers fresh, handpicked herbs.
Daily MarketContains an array of locally-sourced produce
Cooking WorkshopLearn how to create healthy, authentic Italian cuisine.
Coffee and PastriesOffered at market entrance.
Iron Sculpture ShowcaseDisplay beautiful sculptures made from metal.
Artist’s MarketOffers artistic pieces from local Floridian artists.
Activity LoungeRelax with various artistic workshops.
Live MusicCreate inviting entrance by using music.
My first idea was an Italian themed market, since Ironside Miami had already displayed an interest in an European-style community. This marketplace would be an extension of pre-existing themes in Ironside. A fresh-herb wall would be available to the public, and an Italian cooking showcase would be held daily.
My second idea was centered around the idea of Ironside being an artisan community. This market would showcase artworks and other crafted items from local artists. Artisan foods, such as wine and cheese, would be sold as guests participated in craft workshops or art auctions.

Analysis
Butterfly Garden 2.0Link spaces by expanding the butterfly garden.
Prepared Foods MarketOffers jams, honey, and other ready-to-eat foods.
Flower ShopPurchase Italy’s favorite flowers and plants from local nurseries.
Open Event SpaceProvides space for vendors, foodtrucks, and seating.
Scheme 3: Environmental The last scheme was centered around Ironside’s eco-friendly message. A flower shop and garden workshop would be offered to guests who were interested in Italian landscape. The butterfly garden from the piazza would be extended to the outdoor event space.
The marketplace has a fairly linear circulation that cuts through the middle of the plan. Foliage surrounds the permiter of the open event space. There are two entrances- one that leads directly into the open event space, and another that leads to the entrance of the mercato.
