West African drumming teacher, Laura Mihalinec, moved from Melbourne to Darwin last year and decided to start classes for anyone wanting to learn. ‘‘I noticed there wasn’t much of a drumming community up here. There was nothing happening here – I wanted to start something,’’ she said. Ms Mihalinec learnt drumming down south and fell in love with it. ‘‘I always loved the rhythm. I was progressing well and in the advanced class. When I moved up to Darwin, I decided to teach others,’’ she said. Ms Mihalinec played piano from age five and, at 16, she started singing. Before finding drumming, she was also in a Latin band. ‘‘Music has always been in my life,’’ Ms Mihalinec said. Ms Mihalinec said African drumming was becoming more popular. ‘‘People seem to be really enjoying it – it’s something to share as a group,’’ Ms Mihalinec said. ‘‘You can learn something new and make new friends. ‘‘The community spirit that it brings makes you feel good. ‘‘It lifts your mood, it’s self- expression. Drumming is something anyone can tap on. It’s an approachable instrument.’’ West African drumming, Alawa Scout Hall, Mondays, at 6pm. Cost $20 a lesson. TOP Enders looking for rhythm

West African drumming

teacher, Laura Mihalinec, moved

from Melbourne to Darwin last

year and decided to start classes

for anyone wanting to learn.

Ms Mihalinec learnt drumming
