Sector InitiativesThe Innovation team have met with over 200 companies this year and we can report the following:
CASE STUDY: Co-Formulate CASE STUDY: HistologiX
iNETMedilink East Midlands (EM) continues to deliver sector specific innovation support across the region, encouraging and enabling SMEs and individuals on their innovation journey from concept to market.
Amongst a host of activities, this support has facilitated collaborations, provided access to grant funding, guided and reassured new-to-the-sector innovators, as well as enhanced the opportunities for business growth. This activity has been supported in part by funding from the European Regional Development Fund, and this will continue into 2015.
An interim independent evaluation of this current phase of activity was undertaken in the summer of 2014. This concluded that the service delivered by Medilink EM continues to be of high quality, that the reach of the service continues to expand into the sector and that SMEs were optimistic about the impact of the activity on growth and jobs.
Co-Formulate is a contract pharmaceutical development organisation which translates product concepts into feasible commercial product technologies and has built an enviable reputation working with organisations from global blue chips to SMEs and academic groups.
A move into larger laboratories at MediCity provided an opportunity for service expansion and reduced the need for outsourcing services. The Co-Directors, Huw Jones and Nazim Kanji, approached Medilink EM for support and the programme provided grant funding to assist in the employment of a highly skilled analytical scientist to develop and manage an expanded analytical and stability testing service.
The creation of the Food Supplements Special Interest Group (SIG) has also proved timely for Co-Formulate, providing an ideal forum in which to commence their expansion into the food supplement arena.
Nazim commented, “Medilink EM continues to provide us with support and beneficial business opportunities. The grant de-risked our move
to bring more of our analytical services in-house while the SIG has enabled us to meet businesses and researchers associated with one of the markets we have targeted for expansion, as well as raise our profile in this area.”
HistologiX is one of Europe’s leading independent GLP - compliant contract histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and InSitu Hybridisation (ISH) service providers to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. It provides specialist human tissue based solutions in support of regulatory preclinical programmes, clinical trials and biomarker development and validation projects.
With digital technologies advancing rapidly within the histology field, David Fairley, Managing Director, saw an opportunity to expand its specialist services into complex digital image analysis that would support the drive by the Pharmaceutical industry to develop targeted therapies more quickly, more accurately and more efficiently allowing a personalised healthcare approach to many different diseases. An approach was made to Medilink EM to see if any funding might be available to support the costs of developing the new service. After a simple and rapid application process, HistologiX received a grant which enabled them to purchase a 12 month license to trial specialist software. This trial proved so successful that a longer term license will be sought, an additional member of staff was employed and it is anticipated that a further two jobs will be created.

The Science Industry Partnership (SIP) is a skills programme led by employers from companies for whom science and technology is critical to success.
Medilink East Midlands, Medilink West Midlands and the Association of British Healthcare Industries (ABHI) are collaborating to deliver a skills programme which specifically reflects the needs of the Medical Technologies (MedTech) sector. The two Midlands based Medilinks are leading this initiative on behalf of Medilink UK. This programme is in partnership with COGENT (the Sector Skills Council for Science Based Industries) and has funding support from HM Government’s Employer Ownership Pilot.
Overall, the full SIP programme encompasses a range of skill-related aspects in the science sectors including workforce development, careers, traineeships, apprenticeships, and higher education. The Medilinks will support and help inform on these elements as key industry representatives for the MedTech sector. As well as promoting the overall SIP programme, Medilink EM and Medilink WM are responsible for the delivery of programmes in Workforce Development and Traineeships specifically designed for the MedTech sector.
Workforce DevelopmentThis is an employer-led programme designed to support MedTech companies to develop their existing workforce and enable them to meet their skills needs that are important for business success.
Companies with less than 200 employees located in England can access a grant of up to £500 to cover a maximum of 50% of the training costs for each employee per learning intervention (training course).
TraineeshipsThe MedTech Traineeship Programme has been designed to prepare young people (16-18 year olds) for their future careers by helping them to become work - ready through a work experience placement. These pre-apprenticeship programmes have an emphasis on providing an appreciation of working in the MedTech industry. The pilot programme will include college learning, NHS and Industry placements.
What type of training is eligible?
They can be established training courses identified by a company or one of the Medilink run, SIP approved courses. However, they must fall into one of the 8 broad competency areas:

Artificial Pancreas wins at Gadget Show
SLS Donate Supplies for the Ebola Crisis
Nottingham’s Attenborough Dental has pioneered a “ground breaking” new medical procedure to create custom-made spinal implants for patients by transferring the digital 3D printing technologies used in the dental profession to orthopaedics.
Managing director Ed Attenborough said the proposal was not being trialled anywhere else in the world and he expects 24 patients to be fitted with one of the custom-made devices by the end of 2015.
Liz Fothergill - healthcare entrepreneur and Chair of the Board of Pennine Healthcare, Derby and Medilink East Midlands
member company has been named Inspirational Woman of the Year at the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce Enterprising Women Excellence Awards.
Liz joined the family business in 1977, and helped it grow from an engineering business. By the end of the 70s it was selling a small range of medical products and today, now known as Pennine Healthcare, it turns
over £30m a year, has 380 employees and produces 200,000 items a day, of which 70 per cent are exported to
70 countries worldwide.
Renfrew Group and De Montfort University’s’ collaborative project - The InSmart Artificial Pancreas - has been chosen as the overall winner of the British Inventors Project as part of the Gadget Show Live 2014.
The artificial pancreas automatically releases the correct insulin dose to diabetic patients and is an implantable device with the potential to end multiple insulin injections for sufferers of Type 1 diabetes - a large proportion of whom are at risk of over or under medicating with current treatment methods.
Nottingham-based Scientific Laboratory Supplies Ltd (SLS) has donated nearly £3,000 worth of medical supplies and protective equipment to help the Ebola crisis in West Africa. Working through the charity International Health Partnership (IHP), the SLS items were transported free-of-charge by PSJ Couriers to a dedicated DHL depot in Banbury. The consignment includes medical-grade gloves, disinfectants, syringes, needles, cannula and hooded coveralls.
“We are proposing to scan the patient in 3D and then produce a custom-made spinal implant for the patient using 3D printing and manufacturing technologies. In theory the process could be expanded to knees or hips, for example.”
“I was really concerned by what I heard and read about the Ebola outbreak. The company encourages us to think about community investment programmes and it made me wonder what we might do. Then I realised that SLS has just the kind of medical supplies and equipment the hospitals in the affected areas need.”
SLS Business Support Coordinator Amy Skaith came up with the idea and approached her company to help.

Medilink EM Grant Creates New Jobs in Healthcare Sector
Collaborative Chambers
Drug Development Gets Backing
Products Developed to Help Women After Childbirth
As a direct result of Innovation Grants, five new jobs have been created with two Medilink EM members, the AES Group and Patricell, taking on new staff this year.
The AES Group required four full-time software developers to customise their new advanced diagnostics system, HaeomoSys® V2 and match this system to the clinical journeys of blood cancer patients in the UK and overseas. Without grant funding, this product development would have been delayed significantly, and the project would not have been resourced with the calibre of staff required.
In addition, Patricell, providers of immunology and biotech products, made a new appointment in their sales division to support the UK market and its expansion into Europe. Patricell specialises in marketing cell systems and the team facilitates enquiries from laboratories researching which antibodies should be applied against antigens. With its great procurement success rate, the company required an individual with a specialist skill set i.e. both an in-depth technical knowledge of biotech products as well as sound business acumen. The company’s new recruit, part-funded by the grant, will be instrumental to Patricell’s future growth.
John Longworth, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce and George Cowcher, Chief Executive of the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce met with Darren Clark, Chief Executive of Medilink East Midlands, to discuss the region’s growing life sciences industry and greater ongoing collaboration between Medilink EM and the Chamber of Commerce. By forging stronger links between the work of the Chamber and Medilink there is potential to accelerate industry growth, and support more businesses in this field.
Nottingham-based Molecular Profiles Ltd., a subsidiary of Columbia Laboratories, Inc., (Nasdaq: CBRX) and XenoGesis Ltd. have announced a collaboration to support pharmaceutical and biotech drug developers during the pre-clinical and formulation development stage.
Molecular Profiles’ pharmaceutical development services will be supported by XenoGesis’ expertise in pre-clinical drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) to give clients a smarter route into formulation development and a better understanding of a compound’s bioavailability.
This will allow the companies to help drug developers in the initial design and selection of compounds for key DMPK and ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination) studies, as well as supporting lead candidates, which have solubility issues during formulation development.
Founded by two entrepreneurial midwives in 2011, The Natural Birthing Company was started primarily to give women a bit of extra care. Jane Mason and Theresa Mounsey are using their expertise to give women a better experience before, during and after birth with a range of natural products to help with the more painful aspects of pregnancy.
They discovered the market niche for these products and worked to create their own pilot range. After significant toil, and with the help of an IAG grant awarded by Medilink EM in 2013, their work came to a positive result with four products created, including a body spray to cool pregnant
“The East Midlands has very strong academic and commercial life science heritage, it is also a region blessed with a keen entrepreneurial spirit, and engineering heritage the combination of which is a compelling proposition for business.”
women down and a massage oil to help ease the pain of childbirth.
The products have already been taken on by high street shops, the pharmacist for the royal family, Argos, Superdrug, Amazon and distributors in Europe and the Far East. Jane said, “It’s just flying. It’s only when you sit down and talk to somebody about it that you realise how much you’ve achieved. We do feel proud - it’s taken hard work and money as well.”
Theresa added, “We are really proud of it (the company) - it’s a natural product and that’s the basis of all of it, to support the
natural birth. That’s why we both wanted to be midwives - we’re making a mark.”
Alison Atkinson, head of midwifery for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust said,
“The Natural Birthing Company, which is the idea of two of our experienced midwives, is an excellent example of how Nottingham is very much leading the way when it comes to supporting women through pregnancy, labour and life as a new mum in the best possible way.”
The East Midlands currently has the third largest cluster of MedTech businesses in the country, with the combined East and West Midlands having the largest accumulation.

Our MembersMedilink East Midlands (EM) strives to help members become more innovative, competitive and profitable. Here are some examples of how we have assisted in taking their businesses to the next level.
Hear, HearThe Ear Foundation has been awarded a £10,000 innovation grant, from a project managed by Medilink EM and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), to help launch an innovative online facility designed to help all those concerned with hearing loss, for deaf children to young people and adults.
SoundSpace online is an educational resource and the first initiative of its kind in the UK. The system provides current information on hearing loss and management in one central place and draws upon the academic expertise of specialists in e-learning and hearing loss in both the UK and Canada. It is supported by the University of Nottingham and NIHR Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit.
Dr Rosamund Graves, Innovation Team Leader, Medilink EM commented,
“The innovation grant forms part of Medilink’s support offer to health and life science businesses across the East Midlands. A key aim of the project is to facilitate the development of innovative technologies, products and services to address some of today’s most pertinent health issues.”
Collaboration Key to SuccessB & V Group’s success in winning the 2014 Medilink EM “Collaboration with the NHS Award” stimulated them to work proactively with the East Midlands Academic Health Science
Network (EMAHSN) on a number of projects. Woundox Irrigation Solution, a Class 3 medical device, manufactured by B & V Group and marketed by Martindale Pharma contains the same antimicrobial generated by white blood cells (phagocytes). This
antimicrobial works alongside the body’s natural defence system and is optimised at a pH which favours healing, therefore supporting the treatment of diabetic leg ulcers. B & V Group were also invited to a number of face-to-face meetings at Downing Street with the Policy Minister, Oliver Letwin, following a recommendation by Medilink EM. Mr Letwin was particularly interested to hear B & V Group’s experiences with the NHS to date and their recommendations to inform Policy about how companies can work better with the NHS.
Woundox stood out to the EMAHSN, as diabetes is one of their priorities and the medical device had already been introduced to wound care units within the NHS and there is potential for a joint case study with a health centre in the East Midlands.
New Dental Initiative Follows Medilink IntroductionA collaboration cultivated through Medilink EM’s networking services is enabling an innovative new initiative in the dental industry between two leading Nottingham dental companies.
Currently dentists operating in the UK who offer dental implant surgery source the various components required for the surgical procedure from a variety of different suppliers.
Pooling the complementary expertise of the two Directors, Wollaton Implant Solutions Ltd will offer dentists a complete dental implant package. This new kit will include all of the parts necessary to complete a fully anchored prosthetic implant into the jawbone as well as the bespoke dental prosthetic teeth such as crown and bridge.
Wollaton Implant Solutions brings together two of the region’s leading dental device experts, each with substantial experience in the marketplace. Attenborough Dental Ltd is the UK’s longest established dental laboratory and Wollaton Medical Consultancy is an expert in the field of medical devices. The combined skills, experience and backgrounds of this partnership make it uniquely qualified to deliver the ultimate, fully comprehensive packaged solution.
Smart Material Takes Pressure Off Baltex have been members of Medilink EM for 4 years and have received a number of grants and advice on avenues of finance through the support of the Innovation team. After seven years of R&D a smart material product to support wheelchair users has been brought to market and is about to go into its second phase of research development.
Airospring is a pressure-relieving, moisture-wicking, breathable and fully machine washable cushion which has qualities to help prevent an unpleasant medical condition that can affect wheelchair users - pressure sores. Sores form when people are stuck in one position for too long, which stretches the skin and cuts off the blood supply and these sores cost the NHS £1.8-2.6bn a year.
The Airospring cushion has been created by Professor Subhash Anand MBE of the University of Bolton’s Institute for Materials Research and Innovation and retired Golborne Engineer, Bryan McArdle and Derbyshire company, Baltex Technical Textiles. Thanks to a Technology Strategy Board grant, the R&D team has £500,000 research funding to develop new products using their unique technical textile, XD Spacer Fabrics made at Baltex. These include mattresses and shoe insoles, as heel ulcers can be a huge issue for people with diabetes which experts think is likely to increase given our aging population.
