Practical Administration of Medicines in a Primary Care Setting (Accredited)

Aim: When the needs of vulnerable and older adults mean that care workers must administer medicines, training in safe handling of medicines is crucial. The employer should provide a training package that will meet both the needs of the care workers/health professionals and their service users/clients/patients. The responsibility of the care worker/health professional is to ensure that medicines are only administered to the person for whom they are prescribed, given in the right dose, at the right time by the right route, under a legal duty of care. This training is intended for anyone taking full responsibility for administering medicines i.e. carers choosing the medicines on behalf of their clients/patients. The course offers delegates an opportunity to participate and be assessed in the practical application of medicines administration within a safe environment. Each delegate will complete a series of practical tasks during the session that will be recorded within their delegate work book. Delegates will be advised to discuss their work book and learning outcomes with their manager. Delegates who have completed this course will be able to offer effective delivery of quality medicines support to vulnerable adults within their own homes following appropriate competency assessment by the employing organisation. This practical course builds on the Medicines Awareness and Administration training package. The two training sessions together, which take a full day, provide initial basic training on administering medicines. The training session does not cover how to administer medication that is given by invasive techniques (known as level 3).
