    OUR STAFF

I had the pleasure and honor to present the HHS Nursing Excellence Award - MUMC to Joan Vardy during Nurses Week Celebrations.

“Joan  is an excellent Diagnostic Imaging nurse as she advocates for her patients, comforts them and makes sure they receive the best care while in the department. Joan's nursing skills really shine during difficult procedures as she is ready for anything. Though nursing in Diagnostic Imaging is not mainstream nursing, it is an area that requires talented, experienced and caring nurses, and Joan is one that should be recognized as such. “

Joan, we thank you for your leadership and contributions to those in our community who we are privileged to serve. Congratulations from your friends and colleagues in Diagnostic Imaging.

    Joan Vardy

Code Captain of Excellence Congratulations to Maryellen Chambers, who   has   the   distinction   of   being   honored   with   a   ‘2012   Code   Captain  Excellence   Award’. Mary Ellen works as a Booking Clerk for the Diagnostic Services Department in the Central Booking Office. Upon moving to Central Booking in 2010, Mary Ellen volunteered for the role of Code Captain for the new office. Since  the  office  was  a  ‘new’  space  with  many  employees  who  came  together  from  all  of  the  sites,  Mary Ellen stepped forward as a leader and immediately started organizing the area for emergency preparedness. Mary Ellen reached out to the Code Captains in the main Diagnostic Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Departments for guidance when orientating herself to the role. Mary Ellen worked diligently to prepare all EDM resources for the area, including the Code Binder, Evacuation Routes and Maps, Attendance Lists and Toolkit. Her enthusiasm to the role was recognized and appreciated by all of her colleagues. They  even  presented  Mary  Ellen  with  a  special  ‘Code  Captain’  vest,  which  they  created  themselves,  complete  with  safety  reflectors,  caution  tape  and  an  orange  feather  boa. Nobody can miss who the Captain is now! Mary Ellen works collaboratively with management to ensure that any safety concerns the staff may have are brought to our attention. She works independently each month to organize the staff for monthly drills and always ensures she orients new staff regarding Emergency Preparedness. Mary Ellen shows her commitment to her Code Captain role by ensuring everyone is informed of any changes or updates to procedures. She also provides exemplary leadership during incidents, such as the recent Code Grey at Hamilton General, when she ensured all CBO staff were aware of procedures to follow and located flashlights for staff in mere seconds!

Congratulations and thank you both for your dedication!

Your  patients  move  through  the  healthcare  system;  now  their  images  can  too… Kathy Fader has joined the DI-r Division within Mohawk Shared Services, to work directly with hospital stakeholders within each site and location to ensure optimum use and adoption of the DI-r.    Kathy’s  role  as  Business  Delivery  Manager  will assist sites with training and adoption of the DI-r with clinicians and other care-givers. Kathy can be reached at 289-426-5315 or by email at [email protected].

Access x-rays, diagnostic images and associated reports from other hospitals. Use the DI-R to reduce the possibility of unnecessary re-takes and duplicate studies. Bypass the need to have images burned to CD and shipped from other hospitals; access images directly from the DI-r. Gain  access  to  your  site’s  exams  and  reports  via  OneView,  the  DI-r viewer, even if your local PACS is unavailable. View patient images and associated reports from over 50 participating hospitals in LHINs 1, 2, 3 and 4. Use DI-r images to collaborate with colleagues and take advantage of specialized diagnostic imaging captured at other hospitals. Get a more complete picture of your patient, use the DI-r to access the full DI exam.

Clinicians may request access to the DI-r OneView© web application for use within the HHS network by contacting HHS Computer Access Management at [email protected] or phone ext. 44201. A hospital ID badge must be presented at this  time  and  the  “One  View  User  Terms  &  Conditions”  form  signed. Clinicians will be provided with a copy of the “Cheat  Sheet”  and  the  list  of  current  sites  available  in  One  View  –SWO DI-r.

Changes in OHIP fee schedule - David Wormald As you may be aware, The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC) announced changes to the OHIP fee schedule  on  May  7,  2012  as  part  of  Ontario’s  Action  Plan  for  Health  Care.    To  that  end,  it  is  the  provincial  government’s  intent  to  update  and  rebalance  OHIP  fees  to  reflect  current  medical  practices  and  new  technologies  allowing the government to invest in more home care and expanded health care services. The new funding policy will result in the following changes effective April 1, 2012:

2.5% reduction in technical fee ( Diagnostic Imaging and Nuclear Medicine) 5.0% reduction in professional fee ( Diagnostic Imaging only ); 5.0% reduction in professional fee for BMD The addition of a professional fee code for Pet scan - Esophageal carcinoma MRI and CT – 3D reconstructions reduced by 50%. Computed Tomography (CT) and/or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for Chronic Low Back Pain ; X-ray, CT or MRI studies of the lumbar spine are only eligible for payment when rendered for low back pain with suspected pathology. Examples include, but are not limited to: infection, tumour, osteoporosis, ankylosing spondylitis, fracture, inflammatory process, radicular syndrome, and cauda equina syndrome.

Diagnostic Services has been working with our colleagues in the Finance Department to identify the financial impact and make the requisite changes in our financial billing system. We have also implemented a communication plan to advise key stakeholders of these changes.

Over the past several days, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) has received several inquiries from hospitals respecting recently announced changes to the OHIP Schedule of Benefits in relation to diagnostics, particularly the reduction in fees for self-referral. While this latter provision remains ambiguous for Diagnostic Imaging and MDU, HHS continues to work with the OHA and the MoHLTC about this and related matters in an effort to clarify important details, such as operational implementation of technical and professional fees. The MoHLTC has advised that they will be consulting with the health sector to support implementation that will not impact patient access.

Cancer  Care  Ontario  has  recognized  St.  Joseph’s  Healthcare,  King  Campus  OBSP  as  one  of  the  LHIN’s  highest  performing hospitals with regards to wait times to diagnosis for breast cancer. They have diagnosed 95% of all breast assessment cases that do not require tissue biopsy within the 5 week benchmark and 95% of all breast assessment cases that require a tissue biopsy within the 7 week benchmark. These targets exceed the 90% target for diagnosis without a tissue biopsy within 5 weeks and diagnosis with tissue biopsy within 7 weeks. The King Street Campus is the second largest organized breast screening center in Hamilton. The dedication and commitment of the staff is the major contributing factor to this excellent performance. Keep up the great work!
