As the weather gets colder, more

residents are beginning to use their

fireplace as an additional heat source.

Here are some tips to ensure that you

and your loved ones remain safe while

enjoying your fireplace!

1. Do not burn trash, plastics,

chemicals, wrapping paper, magazines,

colored or coated papers (including

newspaper fliers, junk mail, etc.). Never burn charcoal,

coal or holiday wreaths/trees in the fireplace.

2. Monitor to your smoke levels. Build small fires rather

than large, smoldering or “roaring” ones. Use seasoned

hardwoods that burn hot and provide complete

combustion.

3. Use your fireplace or wood stove sparingly for special

occasions. A fireplace or wood stove should never be

used as a primary heat source within the home.

4. Use a gas log when possible.

5. Clean your chimney often.

6. Never use gasoline, charcoal lighter or other

flammable liquids when attempting to light or re-ignite

a fire. The vapors of these products can explode

without warning.

7. Do not allow small children near the fireplace without

adult supervision.

8. Never leave a fire unattended and always make sure

that a fire in the fireplace/wood stove is completely

out before going to bed or leaving the home.

9. Be sure to remove flammable materials that hang or in

close proximity to your fireplace or wood stove.

10. Make sure you have basic fire safety knowledge and

equipment before using a fireplace or woodstove. Keep

a type ABC fire extinguisher close by, install a screen

that completely covers the fireplace opening, equip

your home with smoke detectors and use a spark

arrester on top of your chimney.

For more information on fireplace safety, please contact

Risk and Safety Specialist, Amy Johnson, at 704.943.6095,

980.395.3054 or via e-mail at [email protected].

The Flying Saucer proved to be a

fun, relaxed setting for the first off

-site meeting of the Medical Journal

and ECG Club.

We reviewed six published ECG's

from patients who either died

shortly after the ECG was

obtained, or had a significant delay

in diagnosis due to ECG misinterpretation. We also

discussed two journal articles on the risks and benefits of

spinal immobilization: Out-of-hospital Spinal

Immobilization: Its Effect on Neurologic Injury from

Academic Emergency Medicine; and Spine Immobilization

in Penetrating Trauma: More Harm Than Good?

from The Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection and Critical

Care.

Attendance and interest for this meeting was significantly

increased and so we will host the next couple of meetings

at the Saucer. Please be sure to join us for our next

meeting tentatively scheduled for Friday, January 7th. More

to follow...
