Hello this my Media task 2 Essay/Report.I will be covering the different aspects of the hit TV show House m.d such as the lighting, Sound, props, camera angle, themes. And many other Areas.

Light

During different house episodes the light often changes.For example, when he begins to hallucinate they light begins to

increase and shines brightly in the camera lens which suggest that he is not in normal reality.

When they are preforming different operations the light is also rather bright.

The director had done this because when the light is bright it suggests that the patient is possibly dying because bright lights

could symbolize near death.In my opinion this works really well because it helps again make it

feel realistic to the audience.

Sound

The TV show features many different sounds such as various medical equipment

Such as BPM monitor, Breathing machines and other various medical machines

The director has done this because it helps in force the idea of it being a real working hospital.

During a surgery a patient is near death as they operate a voice can be heard whispering in the background.

They have put this in because it makes us think that the patient is dying.

Props

The show is full of different branded items like Dell machines, Apple mac books ETC

The have included these because they have been paid by these company’s (Apple ETC)

These brands also help make the show feel more ‘real’ because they use everyday brands.

They also had props just lying around so Laurie could improvise with them.

Tone/Facial expressionsThe tone varies between episodes.

When something bad happens the light is always low and people’s facial expressions are scared.

This helps create the tone of the episode because the audience can see their facial expression and are able to figure out what is going on. The director has done this because he wants to be able to create the

tone of the episode without having one talking.

Tone/MusicThe music also helps to create the tone of an episode. House

features lots of different types of music/songs. In one episode a patient dies and at the end a soft acoustic guitar can be heard

playing.

The director has had this put in because it makes it sound sad and gives the episode a depressing tone.

The main intro music as a very modern theme to it. This helps give the idea it is

The intro starts of with the house md logo

The logo uses the Hydrogen symbol from the periodic table which suggest that it is a medical program.

The director has done this because it makes it look like a medical program.

The next shot shows a head with the brain showing which again shows that it is a medical show.

Through out the intro it shows a variety of different medical images such as chest x-ray, Skull/brain, Spinal cord and Chest with lungs.

These also contribute to the point.

For the first season of House md Massive Attack song teardrop was used.

Audience

The audience for house is aimed at of 25-45 year olds.I think this because the show has sarcastic comments and jokes that

kids would not understand. Also the shows storyline is really complicated so again it is unsuitable for kids.

The director has done this because they will get more viewers if the show is more aimed at young adults to adults.

Ratings/Views

watch it. And 688,000 Viewers in the UK.When the series was being made during the first season people were doubting that it would be successful. But in the end they were wrong

and they ended up making lots of money.

Hugh Laurie (The actor who plays House) was the most paid actor on TV while House was being aired.

Because it has gotten such a good response from critics it has become rather famous. This helped increase sales.

Camera work

The show features a lot of use of the “Walk and talk” Filming technique (This was use in shows like St. Elsewhere, ER, Sports night

and the west wing). This director has done this because it shows all the actors in the

frame and it shows the full background in the frame as well.

The show also shows outside view of the hospital (First campus center for Princeton university).

The director has put this in because it helps the view create an image of what the hospital exterior looks like.

The last episode of season six was filmed using a Canon 5D DSLR which was the first time a network tv show was filmed using an

under two-thousand-dollar consumer camera.

The set for house is really well designed. Over the years it has become more modern looking. From the first series it shows an

old/outdated hospital but every series it becomes more modern.

The show features many different famous actors like Hugh Laurie who plays House. While he was filming House he was the highest

paid actor (250,000 Pound). Over the series they gained and lost of a lot of actors (Mainly due to money)

The shows also had other actors like Lisa eldenstien who played dr Lisa cuddy the admin for PPTH.

Robert Sean Lenard played James Wilson (House best and only friend)

Omar Epps played Eric foremen house boss and employee

Jesse spencer played dr Robert Chase head of surgery and took over diagnostics after House.

Jennifer Morrison played dr Allison Cameron

The director has done this because it is usual and gives a cool effect

When both House and James are talking to each other they often argue and talk about Houses weird methods of doing stuff.

The director has done this because it shows a different side of characters that the viewers don’t normally see.
