Introduction

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the 15th edition of CentEast Market, supported by the Polish Film Institute.CentEast was initiated as a Polish-Russian joint venture back in 2005. And we are still friends with my Russian partner, Mr Gindilis, and the man who did the matchmaking, Mr Medvedev. Our friendship is still stronger than politics.

The beginnings were very modest. In 2000 we organised the first edition of Warsaw Screenings, showing a couple of new Polish films with English subtitles to a handful of festival programmers, who attended the Warsaw Film Festival. It worked. Years later Mr Kitanov told me that our little event inspired him to launch Sofia Meetings, which became one of the top events for film professionals in the region.

At some point we introduced presentations of works-in-progress from the region. Again it went well. At some point the Ukrainian film “Tribe”, launched at CentEast, landed at Cannes. This is how the steel was tempered.

This year’s CentEast will be quite modest. The funding decision was made only 16th September. But we hope the future will be bright. Welcome to Warsaw! Stefan Laudyn general manager of the Warsaw Film Foundation

English title: KULT FILMOriginal title: KULT FILMDirector: Olga BieniekCountry of production: Poland Year of production: 2019Running time: 80’Producer: Małgorzata MałysaProduction company: FILMICONContact person: Małgorzata Małysa [email protected]

Synopsis: A story about KULT, a band whose success is largely based on an idea that also became the title of one of their songs: “Your word is true”. You can love or hate this truth, but you cannot remain indifferent. KULT: creative power, the capacity to bring in crowds, four decades on the Polish music scene and the status of one of the greatest and most popular Polish rock bands in the history of the genre. Being on tour is these musicians’ natural environment. That is why a tour forms the narrative framework for this story. It is an element of their daily lives. “This is not a film about the band’s history. We watch them in a way that enables us to get closer to them. I don’t think anyone has been this close before. Even me, although I am a fan, love them and have a soft spot for all of them” – Olga Bieniek

English title: Mister T.Original title: Pan T. Synopsis: A writer on the front line of the war against the system. Full of dark humour, sex and emotions, this is a surprisingly contemporary story about Poland from absurd times when the improbable was quite possible. Saturated with nostalgia, it takes us into an extraordinary world in which famous writers and poets from the artistic bohemia sat around in eateries and cafés, furtively commenting on the evils of the world around them. Starring a transformed Pawel Wilczak making a great comeback. The excellent cast includes stars such as Sebastian Stankiewicz, Marysia Sobocińska, Wojciech Mecwaldowski, Jacek Braciak, Jerzy Bończak, Eryk Lubos, Katarzyna Warnke, Bartłomiej Topa, Wiktor Zborowski, Jan Nowicki and many others. Expect some acting surprises as well, including a daring scene featuring Jacek Fedorowicz, Kazimierz Kutz and Leszek Balcerowicz, and Michał Urbaniak giving a brilliant performance of his own jazz composition “Mister T.”.

Synopsis: The moving story of rapper Tomasz Chada (1978-2018), a guy from a high-rise housing estate who had the soul of a poet and a talent for getting into serious trouble. Genuine and painfully honest in his lyrics, Chada died in unexplained circumstances, leaving behind his shocked fans and the girl he loved. Music was his whole life – his passion and a world where he would take refuge whenever reality did not have much to offer. “He had and still has a group of devotees and continuators. His texts were often crude, but it wasn’t crudeness for its own sake; these were very personal and stylistically distinctive pieces. Many rappers learned from him. He has many imitators, some better, some worse, but as far as lyrics are concerned, he defined standards that are still alive today” – Michał Węgrzyn. The title refers to the rapper’s first album. Piotr Witkowski plays the lead role.

English title: Valley of the GodsOriginal title: Dolina BogówDirector: Lech MajewskiCountry of production: Poland, Luxemburg, USA Year of production: 2019Running time: 131’ Cast: John Malkovich, Josh Hartnett, Jaime Ray NewmanProducer: Lech Majewski, Filip Jan RymszaProduction company: Royal Road EntertainmentContact person: Lech Majewski [email protected], Filip Rymsza [email protected]

Synopsis: The film weaves together three narrative threads: the first one is an archaic legend of the Navajo Indians, about gods who populate the Valley of the Gods as rock monuments. The second one is the story of the wealthiest man, Wes Tauros. Suffering from a personal tragedy, Tauros lives hidden away from the world and makes a public appearance only from time to time. The third story is that of the narrator, John Ecas, who works as a copywriter at Tauros’s company. After a traumatic split from his wife and looking for a way out of a dead end, John starts writing his boss’s biography and accepts an invitation to his mansion. At this time Tauros’s company, which mines uranium ore, buys the Valley of the Gods to bore tunnels through the sacred land. The shattered peace of Navajo ancestors makes the rocks give birth to an avenger… A fascinating, mysterious, beautiful and peculiar vision of America.

Crime was thriving in Russia, and drugs began to appear in school. Now in the city cemetery there are rows of graves of school friends of Ivan, died from drugs. “The death toll from heroin was almost like WWII”, the playwright recalled, “and the local drama theatre went on with performing Lope de Vega’s plays with there huge fake mustaches!”. The film tells how young Ivan tried to change the theatre in his city, but failed and was forced to leave Siberia forever.

AGENTS A young man tries to live by his traditional ideals. Life challenges his

world view. The Brotherhood is a group of 12 young men aged between 16 and 35. According to its founders, the Brotherhood was established at a time of a masculine identity crisis. Its actions are based on four linchpins: political, military, intellectual and religious. Its members follow the ethos of knights and teach one another how to live by it in Poland in the 21st century. They are incurable dreamers. Antek is one of the members. Antek is different than his friends. He tends to listen rather than talk, he is empathetic and sensitive. Recent changes in his personal life make him neglect his Brotherhood obligations.

One day they met at a funeral of Monika’s first love and one of the attendees the gatherings at Mariusz’s apartment, and… fell in love. Together they developed a pioneer method for treating autism. Now they’re going to Saudi Arabia. They still fight.

MY BIG BIBA (MOJA WIELKA BIBA) 90’DIRECTOR: JUDYTA FIBIGERPRODUCERS: JUDYTA FIBIGER, ROBERT RHODIN WHITE SHARK STUDIOSPRODUCTION STAGE: DEVELOPMENTLOOKING FOR: CO-PRODUCERS, BROADCASTERS A film portrait of Barbara Hulanicki, a visionary, fashion revolutionary, founder

of the legendary Biba store in London. A story of a woman who was ahead of her time. BIBA was one of the greatest fashion revolutions of our time: a tiny store in London in the late 60s that soon turned into a huge department store in High Street Kensington. “The most beautiful store in the world,” the Sunday Times called it, “a place that defined the 1960s”. Founder Barbara Hulanicki offered something that had never been done before – iconic yet modern fashion for every budget. Biba was not just a store – it was a lifestyle. Ardent customers included David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Richard Avedon, Twiggy and Mick Jagger. It was where the first mass-produced clothing started, and it paved the way for today’s retail giants like ZARA and H&M. Presided over by Barbara Hulanicki and her husband Stephen Fitz-Simon and ruled by women, Biba may have been the first feminist company in the world. The film will be an overdue rediscovery of a major piece of 20th century cultural history.

WHEN THE WIND BECOMES SILENT (KIEDY UMILKNIE WIATR) 72’DIRECTOR: MATEUSZ GOŁĘBIEWSKIPRODUCER: MAŁGORZATA DOMIN, DOMINIKA MANDLA, KINGA MIELNIKPRODUCTION COMPANY: DOMINO FILMPRODUCTION STAGE: DEVELOPMENT LOOKING FOR: CO-PRODUCERS, FINANCING, BROADCASTERS When the Wind Becomes Silent tells the story of the unusual rivalry between

two athletes – Egil Danielsen and Janusz Sidło. The main arc of narration is the final of the XVI Olympiad in Australia, which turned out to be one of the least expected in the history of sports. In 1956, Sidło went to Melbourne as an absolute favourite. During the competition, Sidło reached an incredible score, which put him in the lead. Unexpectedly, right before the end of the competition, he decided to help his main competitor Egil Danielsen, sug-gesting him the use of a prototype, steel javelin. This unexpected behavior changed not only the result of the Olympics, but also his life and sport career afterwards. Sidło went to the olympic games again three times – every time as a favorite to gold – and every time came back with nothing. Melbourne silver medal was only olympic success in his long career.

Being 28 years old I come back home to confront my father. I invite him to take Lindy Hop dance classes with me. But the dancing course is just a part of the process to reconnect. The true dance is the one which happens at our home. I take small steps starting from doing simple house works together, renovating my teenage room and painting my father’s portrait. My dad is resistant and not easy to open. Yet a change is gradually getting visible. The dancing course comes to an end. Now, my father is giving dance classes to my mom. Will this change last for longer? Will this influence my future life?
