in American business, with growing workforces in health and
education, technology and manufacturing, business services
and hospitality. Long Island is also the headquarters of some of

The internet and softwarehave changed the way peoplebook travel, do their taxes, andsend and receive messages, cre-ating steep job losses among
workers in those fields, localand national economists say.

cent, to 270 from 710 Couriers and messengers:down 52 percent, to 460 from950
Despite those losses, Long Is-land has close to a record num-ber of jobs: 1.34 million in Sep-tember, the most ever for thatmonth, and up from 1.25 millionin September 2005, according tothe state Labor Department.
That job growth has beenpowered by other industries —most notably health care, whichgot a boost from expansion ofservices under the AffordableCare Act, or Obamacare.
Workers in some professionsthat have lost jobs because oftechnology say they embracethe change it brings because itenhances their work and im-
