documentary, 26 minutes, 2005Egypt on the Neva Banks

The historical plotline of the film is dedicated to the comparison of destinies of two reformers on the throne: the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep IV and the Russian emperor Peter I. In spite of 3000 years devided them, the author finds alike features of reforms carried out by the rulers.

Egyptian monuments and sculptures are mystified with different stories: sphinxes on the Neva embankment, a “fountain of witches” in Pulkovskoye highway, Egyptian gates in Tsarskoye Selo and others.

The 2nd film from the cycle “Myths of Palmyra of the North”

Modernization in Russianpopular science film, 2 episodes for 39 minutes, 2011

It’s a kind of provocation against the present. «Democracy with adjectives», the lack of real pluralism, a dominant role of «super-elite» in government, strict media censorship? These methods have been tried in the country’s history ... The authors appeal to the suc-cessful experience of great Russian reformers: Empress Catherine II, Prime Minister Sergei Witte, the first secretary of CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev. Gathered together on an imaginary meeting, they provide advices and recommendations for the sake of Rus-sia, applicable to current modernization and on the eve of presidential elections of 2012.

The rise to this investigation was given by a little known full dress portrait of Ekat-erina the Second painted by D.G.Levitsky.

The generals, who played key roles in res-cuing Russia from invasions of invaders, as a rule, not for long were in triumph.

Legendary Marshal Zhukov felt it in full.

All representatives of the high society that lived in St.Petersburg knew about this Emperor’s route and obstinately tried to catch the attention of Emperor Alexander the First.

It’s a philosophically historical parable about relationships between the authorities and those who had to entertain them.

A clown can become the king too – the king of fools.

Pray to God for Us

My Father GULAG

Butovsky firing ground is a sacred place. From a special NKVD site of the 1930s it has turned into “Russian Golgotha” - a place of grief for those whose nearest and dearest had to get through the terrible times of repressions.

None of his names is the real one. He has never met his father, he doesn`t know whether he is a child of love or violence. He doesn`t even know, where his homeland is. This documentary film is a story of Jan Antal who was born in a Russian GULAG to a wrongfully deported Slovak mother. This is the first time Jan returns to the place where he was born. He has only one question: «Did you know my father?». The story of Jan and his mother reveals the fate of thousands victims from GULAGs.

But the fact remains: the double eagle tied by itself the centuries-old succession of national transformations on the territory of our country.

What does the double eagle mean? Why was it the main emblem of Russian State over centuries? Why did it become single-headed bird now and spread his wings or fold them then?

Everything has its own explanations. Just such plots define the contents and graphic treatment of the picture.

The peasant revolt in Tambov province remains one of the most mysterious phenomena of Russian history. Many secrets associated with the beginning of the revolt remain unsolved.

documentary, 39 minutes, 2005

Behind the armament and the uniform of the Russian Army of the beginning of the XIXth century were hidden the glorious battle traditions, which are cherished and multiplied by the new generation of the officers of the Russian Army. This film is a kind of a dialogue between centuries, generations and cultures.

In 1990 on the studio “Lentelefilm” the film directed by Vladislav Vinogradov created the film “Russian home” about first-wave emigrants found themselves in France by fate and historical circumstances.

Fifteen years passed away. Many changes have taken place during these years. And now the film directed by studies another aspect of this topic. Has France become “Russian home” for lived-in-there people? Why did the Russians, such as Mother Maria and Nikolai Virubov, become the Gaullists? Do people think themselves emigrants left Russia in the last twenty years? Do they yearn for home?

The cast list: the participant of French Opposition Nikolai Virubov, the writer Boris Nosik, the actor and film directed by Yulian Panich, the English-speaking writer Igor Panich, the chairman of Graduate Union of Cadet corps-lyceum of Emperor Nikolai II in Paris – Dmitry Shmeman and others.

A space vehicle for interplanetary travels is already elaborated and flight ready. The ground module is an imitation of a real space ship. It will be run by the crew consisting of test-bionaunts who will be the first and yet the only people ready to stand both physical and mental test on space loneliness.

The Team

Alferov’s Impulse

Zhores Ivanovich Alferov recollects, creates, meditates and assures that science is a real “engine for progress”. He have been devoted himself to science more then 50 years.

Spectators will discover for themselves another, unknown Alferov. Few people know that his complete surrender to science was born, perhaps, during the last talk with his elder brother…

The film is about close associates of the Nobel prize laureate – Zhores Ivanovich Alferov come to continue the glorious history of the famous Ioffe Physics and Technology Institute.

The meaning of all “team” created by Alferov went down in science history for ages, but this history was founded by 25-years-old young men led by vocation and intuition of 33-years-old leader to the laboratory later become Alferov’s.

This film is about a unique educational institution created by the academician Alferov. It’s the education research center attached to Ioffe Physics and Technology Institute. Only thanks to incredible efforts, scientists managed to fulfil their dream – to create and open a school-laboratary free of dogmas and evolving children’s creativity and research talent. It’s the unique school in Russia attached to RAEN that unifies schoolchildren, students and scientists under the same roof and is called to teach and educate the future native elite.

Health by Notes or Mozart by Prescription

Ivan Sechenov’s Case

The film is dedicated to the influence of music on the human body. The medicinal usage of the music has the centuries old history. In the most ancient evidences and documents, that reached us, the music appeared to be the medicine.

The coryphaei of the antique civilization such as Pythagoras, Aristotle, Plato called their contemporaries’ attention to the medicinal influence of music, which according to them establishes a proportional order and harmony in all the universe, including the destroyed harmony in the human body.

The film is about a famous scientist, founder of Russian physiology school, Ivan Sechenov. One of his talented pupils was the Nobel Prize laureate Ivan Pavlov…

This film is based on the film “Ivan Sechenov’s Case” (Lennauchfilm, 1968), in which invaluable chronicle materials have been put together. New variant of the film presupposes “class approach” denial and modern comprehension of epoch events and role of Sechenov.

Stairs to the Sky

Ships of the Frozen Seas

Do you know who is Artur Klark? Of course it’s a famouswriter-fantast. And who is Yury Artsutanov? You don’t know. But Artur Klark knew and came on purpose to make acquaintance with him. Because the modest Russian engineer is the author of a genius invention of the space ascensor – stairs into the sky. This idea was born in the 60’s and it was from remote future. Today this future seems to be near, and Yury Artsutanov, fortunately, is a long-liver…

The film is devoted to the history of Russian building ice-breaking fleet starting with the first traditional boats used by seacoast dwellers to modern edge nuclear ice-breakers. This is also a story of hard work done by generations of Russian scientists, seamen and ship-builders, as well as training of professionals for nuclear fleet today.

The film was shot in St.-Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Murmansk and Kandalaksha.

The Bridge

The World of Nanotechnology

St.-Petersburg bridges are more than mere links between the riverbanks, they are also splendid pieces of architecture. In 2004 a new bridge across the Neva was constructed – a non-drawn cable bridge.

The Bolshoy Obukhovsky cable bridge is nearly 3 kilometers long and 126 meters high and it is a key element of the St.-Petersburg Ring Road. Its construction is unique in terms of engineering.

This large-scale project raised some concerns. Some citizens worried that with this new structure the city would miss some of its charm and beauty.

Now the bridge has been built. Its light and elegant shape is in harmony with the city landscape. The new structure symbolizes going forward and progress of the 21st century St.-Petersburg.

Will we manage to defeat such terrible diseases as cancer or AIDS? May we hope that cars will become ecologically safe? And if we could find answers to those questions in science fiction only earlier, today, thanks to the achievements of science and technology, many fan-tasies and dreams of the mankind become the reality, and to a great extent with the help of nanotechnology. What is nanotechnology? What is nanometer equal to? What is nanoma-chine? What are the great opportunities nanotechnology gives us?

Prophet

Enthusiasts Near Us

This film tells the audience about the life and scientific efforts of a remarkable person – Vladimir Vernadsky, who combined the professions of a geologist, agrologist, biogeo-chemist, physicist, radiologist, mineralogist, crystallographer, ecologist, philosopher, sci-ence historian, pedagogue, science initiator, political figure, and an advocate of a strong state. The fact that some of these disciplines were created either by him or with his active participation brackets Vernadsky with such geniuses as Aristotle, Avicenna, Leonardo da Vinci, Mihail Lomonosov. In terms of his cosmic views and the feeling of unity between the man and the world, he might be compared to a Biblical prophet as well.

These people are living and working near us and each of them, as a true enthusiast “is known for his great deeds in his field”, but few – mostly their colleagues and patients – are aware of these deeds.

The Structure of Vacuum

Man of Scandal or Letters About Love

The film is about life and work of an outstanding Russian scholar, author and written by Victor Shklovsky. He began as a futurist, and together with his friends Vladimir Mayakovsky and David Burlyuk “threw Pushkin off the ship of modernity”. Like any creative person of that time he had to choose whether to accept the revolution or not. Everything in Shklovsky’s life was a scandal, a challenge to traditions. The film’s aim is to show the brightest moments of this life tightly interlaced with the life of the XXth century. And the authors of the film could by no means neglect the love affairs described by Shklovsky himself in his “Letters Not About Love”.

Valeriy Gavrilin. Easy in My Mind

Boris Pokrovsky. Revelations

There are three characters in the film – the composer Valeriy Gavrilin, the writer, actor and film directed by Vasiliy Shukshin and the poet Nikolay Rubtsov. They are people of one generation and are knit together by love of country and worry about its destiny, expressed with incredible depth and pain in all works.

The film dramaturgic base is a choral symphony-play “Chime” of the composer Valeriy Gavrilin. It’s performed by the Saint- Petersburg academic choral chapel under the direction of Vladislav Chernushenko.

The name of Boris Alexandrovich Pokrovsky is known all over the world. The importance of his contribution to the world art can hardly be overestimated. He is a man of a very unique talent, who put the performances on the biggest opera stages that became the world classics. In spite of his declining years Boris Alexandrovich is still working.

The film gives a memorable description of the work of the outstanding opera expert and his speculations on life and creation.

Illusion

Architects of the Sun City

This is the story about Moscow architecture of the 30-50-ies, of the so called “Stalin style”. The house on the river bank, the famous tall houses, the palaces on the ground and under the ground, the houses built by the captive Germans and political prisoners…

This film is not a scientific research, but an essay, a look at “Stalin Moscow” like at the city in the city; stone chronicle of the great and terrible epoch. Moscow of the totalitarian style is shown as a part of the modern megalopolis, seen by the eyes of the present and future generations.

Graphic and photographic materials from the architecture museum funds as well as the news reels of the 30-50-ies were widely used in the film.

The film tells about the Soviet vanguard architecture of the 1920s, the peak of the Revolution-born art.

Fate of some of the talented artists of the time was tragic. Ivan I. Leonidov, a prominent world-famous constructivist architect, was one of them.

The film was shot in Moscow, St.-Petersburg and Kislovodsk.

An example of a person on the screen for a person in front of a screen can be as a medi-cine, and the seductive poison.

The influence of «the most important of all arts» to the masses can’t be overestimated. After the example of heroes of your favorite movies the viewers upturned virgin

soil, as Ivan Brovkin, and easily crushed moral barriers («Flights in Dream and Reality») became physicists («Nine Days of One Year») and joined the ranks of «prostitutes servic-ing foreigners».

The task of the cycle - to trace the evolution the filmstar whose fictitious character indi-cates the time of his formation.

As Long as the Bells Ring

The First Russian Planetarium

documentary, 40 minutes, 2010

documentary, 13 minutes, 2006

Church bells have always been admired in Russia. Listening to the bells ringing people sought spiritual comfort as well as cure from diseases. So what happened to us and to our country what made us destroy the churches and silence the bells?

Is there a spiritual or genetic memory? Can it be possessed by a nation on the whole or by a person individually? What happened in the late 20th century when the Russian Orthodox Church was revived confirms it. While talking about bell ringing, the film authors also paid attention to scientific research done in this field.

Scenes from “Andrey Rublev” directed by A. Tarkovsky have been used in the film. It also includes chronicles and interviews with medics and scientists which will definitely be of great interest for the audience.

The globe-planetarium. The diameter of this unique technique, culture and art miracle is close on 4 meters. In 1713 the globe was made as a gift to the Russian tzar Peter I. His surprising, at times tragic history of the globe goes on. Today it’s the major exhibit of Petersburg Kunstkamera museum. The film was created in St Petersburg, Tsarskoye Selo and Kunstkamera museum.

To Become a Lion

Silhouettes of Anzhu’s House

It’s exactly Moscow and not St.Petersburg that is a city of stone lions in Russia, according to a widespread view. Besides, Moscow lions differ from the St. Petersburg ones the same as those two cities differ from each other. You will hardly meet Moscow lions on quays and on big squares – and though some of them are rather famous (such as the lion sculpture in Tverskaya Street near the Revolution Museum), most of them are hiding in the shade of mansions or in distant streets. The tale about some of the most interesting lion pairs in Moscow will be built in the form of a detective investigation. From archive materials and historical data of the 19th century, we learn what building the lions accompany, and then we start the search.

Two talented painters regenerated form nothingness an ancient mansion, the Admiral Anzhu’s house. Regeneration of the mansion required huge physical labor and spiritual intension, but they consider that in times of destroying it needs to have the courageto create.

Nowadays the house lives its interesting and bright life. Modern sailors and polar explorers, children and youth find their shelter and happiness here.

Vvedensky. God Might Be Around There

Kharms. The Other Line

Alexander Vvedensky used to call himself “the authority of nonsense”. Behind his cold appearance and affected cynicism he tried to hide his vulnerability and naked, “skinless” feeling of reality. The world created by him was scary and bewitching, piercing and subtle. Fear of the absurdity of life and death – “The world died out. The world was slaughtered, it is a cock”. And a wild guess – “God might be around there”.

The film will reveal secrets about art and life of Daniil Kharms – one of the most striking members of avantgarde grouping of Russian post-Futurist poets called OBERIU. Kharms was both exquisite and foolish, vice and absurdity coexisted in his life. In order to understand this, one has to indulge into the life of poetry of OBERIU. Such approach is chosen for this film to uncover Kharms’s personality and views on life in the best way.

A Girl- X-ray

Everything Begins from the Childhood

Every man has his own talents and abilities. A film character tells us about her talents gone beyond borders of ordinary man’s abilities. If desired she can see through objects…

Researching the brain, scientists have already convinced of the fact that a man doesn’t use even one tenth of his inner potential. That’s why it’s not surprising that children with extraordinary abilities are regularly born all over the world. It’s not a sensation anymore.

In the film “Everything begins from childhood” psychologists, pedagogues and children themselves suggest their variant of a future school. The film raises a problem of child existence in the crazy and cruel megapolis world; how the creative realization, the communion with nature and animals can help children to recover strength and to live in harmony.

Professions

Magic of Words and Soundspopular science film, 39 minutes, 2011

This is a historical and ethnographic study of the traditional way of life of Russian North: Veps, Karelian, Russian, and their mystic rites, rituals, relationships with the world.

A shepherd in Russia - one of the oldest professions. This is a man who takes under his responsibility alien cattle - the main material value of a peasant family, on which their survival is often depended at that times.

Call of the Sea

Living Planet

The film is about people belonging to a profession that is ancient and new at the same time – modern divers. Not to be confused with tourist divers! They don’t look for adventures, the sea bottom is their source of income. Wet or fine, summer and winter alike, they find shellfish and then sell them to maintain themselves and their families. The film features a parallel research telling about the life and craft of ancient divers, plungers of the 19th and the early 20th century, and aqualungers of the 21st century.

Such notion as “rubbish” doesn’t exist in nature at all. It’s exceptionally a human invention. But what is rubbish? A valuable resource, capable to solve ecological and economical problems? A “culture layer” of civilization? Where does it get into after we take it away out of borders of our living space...

This film gives food for thought and helps to understand the essence of this problem.

Ladoga – the Unknown Lake

The Сat Vaska’s Сlinic

Do you know where the Great Lakes are? Certainly, in America – everybody says. American film-makers made them internationally known. But few people ever think of the Great lakes of Europe that are mostly located in Russia. The film about Ladoga lake tells us what everybody has to know today. The Ladoga coasts are really a geological book of the Earth with great landscapes and unique nature.

Hopefully, our film will make people think again whether we are living our lives and planning our future correctly and whether we should try to save Ladoga, this valuable nature reserve now, before it’s too late.

The film addresses people of different age groups, primarily the young audience. The film was shot in different parts of the Ladoga region.

Both animals and people live with inequality in a huge megapolis: some go on the bum and starve, others lead a life of luxury. And even so these worlds cross… Film characters are kind, dedicated to their work people that try all-out to ease animal life in the megapolis: animal shelter workers, veterinary doctors and just citizens loving animals.

Sea Magpie

Ledindocumentary, 44 minutes, 2005

popular science film, 26 minutes, 2011

Film-portrait of the operator, film directed by, legendary man Yuriy Ledin, devoted his 30 years to filming of popular science films about wild animals of the North.

Each film takes about half a year of living in Arctic, on the islands of The Arctic and Pacific Ocean. Despite all the difficulties of expeditions, Ledin family - his wife Lyudmila and daugther Veronica were always together.

Sea Magpie! It sounds intriguing. In fact, the name is not scientific. This is a catcher: a large, stocky bird with contrasting black and white plumage and bright red beak. Why is it called «sea magpie»?

The movie was filmed in famous Kandalaksha Nature Reserve in the Netherlands.

Russian Map

The 2nd film of the cycle “Russian map” is dedicated to the theme of Russian entry into the international market.

Are Russia and the world market com-patible? Does it exist the only right “espe-cial” geopolitical way for Russia?

Does a demographic catastrophe await for Russia. These and other vital important questions are a controversial theme of notable political figures, representatives of the “fourth estate”.

What do ordinary upcountry people think all about it?

Why does Russia need Kurils, Arctic Regions, Polar Region, the Kaliningrad Region? What attitude should we have towards territorial and ethnical pretensions of our

neighbors? What did we get after the USSR’s disintegration? What are geopolitical interests of Russia? The author of the film pores at these and many other questions.

The Endurance of the Cruise is not Limited

The interviews with the people that survived in the camps for prisoners of war and the extermination camps in Germany and that went through the filtration and then the soviet camps were assumed as the basis for all the three films of the series “Victims of the two dictatorships”. Our interlocutors are the people of different fates and of different views on what was happening to them and to the country in those years, but all their stories subjugate with their sincerity and trustworthiness. The films contain a lot of chronicles from the Russian and German archives, as well as a lot of photos from the private collections. The films were shot in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Minsk, Berlin, Cologne, Buchenwald.

Autumn of Childhood

The Fisherman and His Soul

The swing squeak… ringing children’s laughter… the gramophone in the yard and the couples dancing nearby… frisking house cats… Childhood is a happy, carefree time! But disaster is already sitting on your window like a crow. And soon the cruel wind of adult life will whirl you like an autumn leaf. The film relates to the thirties of the last century – the time of repressions and mass shooting. We will see this time by the eyes of the political prisoner that came back to his home yard many years after.

Based on the fairy tale by Oscar Wilde. The main character is a young fisherman who fell in love with the Sea Maiden. Because he

loves her so much and wants to unite with her, he decides to send off his soul. A preacher chased him off, but a young witch agreed to help him. The young fisherman sends off his soul without giving it his heart. Having traveled for some time, his soul returned to him and though it united with him by deceiving him first, the young fisherman’s heart still belonged with the Sea Maiden.
