UNION UNIVERSITY Season Outlook / Summary

The 2004 season came to a quicker end that any had hoped. Union ended the season with a 31-22 record and a 7-13 record in the TranSouth Conference. This season marked one that started with promise and then fi nished with inconsistent play, helped by key injuries in the lineup. Once again, the Bulldogs tallied 30 or more wins. During the 2004 year, Union posted a combined record of 3-1 versus the NAIA National Champion (Cumberland) and the NCAA Div. II National Champion (Delta State).

The season started like any other for the Bulldogs as they won13 of their fi rst 17 games, including two 6-game winning streaks. Included in those fi rst 13 wins of the season were three wins over NCAA Div. II powers North Alabama and Delta State (Miss.). After the fi rst 17 games, inconsistency set in for the Bulldogs. Union went 18-18 to close the season. The Bulldogs had several bright spots, including taking 2-of-3 games from the eventual TranSouth Tournament, NAIA Region XI, and NAIA National Champions, Cumberland University. With just two conference series left in the season, Union sitting in a tie for third place with a 7-7 conference record. However, the Bulldogs lost six straight conference games to fi nish the year and knock them out of the TranSouth Tournament fi eld.

During the season, some of the Bulldogs earned honors and posted individual accomplishments. On February 19, Union’s Jason Johnson hit for the cycle in Union 16-8 win over Lindsey Wilson College. Senior outfi elder became Union’s all-time career leader in walks in the fi nal game of the season as Union topped Lambuth 18-1. Hysmith fi nished with 119 walks, three better than the 116 set by Brandon Myhand from 1995-1998. Senior pitcher Todd Winchester earned second team All-Conference honors for the Bulldogs.

The 2005 season for the Union University Bulldogs is one of the most promising in recent history. The Bulldogs combine a returning core to a very impressive recruiting class. Union is returning three infi eld starters, two outfi eld starters, and a catcher that was in the lineup everyday as a catcher or in someother position. In addition to those returning starters, Head Coach Andy Rushing and Assistant Coach Brent Fronabarger have added a group of players that will earn starting time immediately includ-ing eight new position players to go along with six new pitchers. A few key injuries to starters Jason Johnson and Zach Lowery will cause Union to have to pull from the new talent until these return to the lineup shortly after the season begins. As always, Union is striving to advance deep into the NAIA postseason. Union missed the postseason last year, but have reloaded and are eager to erase the dissapointment of last season with a very successful 2005.

Taking a look at the pitching staff, Clint Arthur returns as a weekend starter. He has an impressive freshman campaign last season and looks to improve on that in 2005. Adam Yates returns after red-shirting last season to recover from surgery. Yates will also hold down a spot in the weekend rotation. Matt Gibbs and Garrett Pepper return as spot starters. Both has good seasons in 2004 and both will be called on to start during the week and provide relief out of the pen on the week-ends. John Mark Walls returns to provide relief out of the pen. The list of pitchers new to the 2005 roster is quite impressive, especially when you see that Union has added four pitchers that are 6-foot-5 or taller. Leading the list are transfers Daniel Adams and Charlie Ligon with Adams fi ling the fi nal spot in the weekend rotation. The two other 6-foot-5 pitchers are transfer Brian Lea and fresh-man Ben Ayris. Freshman Josh Moss and Tim Watson will also help anchor a very deep bulpen for the Bulldogs. Freshman James Brasfi eld and Judson Powers will both be everyday players, but will also see time on the mound. This season’s pitching staff has several players that could pitch on the weekends during conference play and will come in handy during postseason tournament time.

The infi eld for Union returns Josh Allen at fi rst, Seth Silcock at third and Steve Sweat will move from shortstop to second base this season season. Zach Lowery, split time as catcher his fresh-

man season in 2004, will handle the catching duties upon his return form his injury. Pepper, alongwith transfer Adam Green along with freshman Elvis Sosa will give backup to the catching position. Transfer Scott Patterson will start at shortstop for the Bulldogs. Jeffery Jackson returns as a valuable utility player that can play on the infi eld or in the outfi eld. Transfer Aaron Braithwaile is another player that can play fi rst, outfi eld, or be the designated hitter. Freshman James Brasfi eld, Andrew Maddox, and Steve Bredfeldt each turned heads this fall as freshman and will be very valuable players on this deep Union team.

In the outfi eld, two of the three starters from last season are returning including seniors Patrick Williams in center and Jason Johnson in right fi eld. Johnson is injured to start the 2005 season but will return during the year. Freshman Judson Powers will start in left fi eld for Union. Players such as Braithwaile, Jackson, and Tyler Porter will serve as replacements in the spot vacated by Johnson. Porter also serves as the pinch/courtesy runner for the Bulldogs.

NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate AthleticsNAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate AthleticsThroughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering fi rst-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.

The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.

For more information on the NAIA, visit their web site at www.naia.org.

NAIA Champions of Character A Character Development Initiative

Mission StatementThe NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative will create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, offi cial and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.

Vision StatementWhen researching the NAIA’s place in the history of sport and higher education, several consistencies are apparent, including its dedication to academic achievement along with athletic excellence. Also apparent is the organization’s role as a trailblazer in providing equal opportunities for all student-athletes. Above all, there is an expectation of ethical behavior and a commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership.

Throughout its history, the NAIA and its members have used sport informally as a vehicle for character development. Because the athletic arena has become a microcosm of society, the time has come to bring a more formal emphasis to character development on every level and especially in sport. The NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative, through awareness, education and community involvement, will continue to develop an atmosphere of integrity in sport. Character and cooperation will grace our youth as they compete in athletics and life.
