Best of European films to be screened in Delhi 2nd April.’15 For 20 years, the European Union Film Festival has handled the mantle of showcasing the best of European cinema in India. And this year is no different. Beginning with Pizzas from Latvia (to be screened at Instituto Cervantes on April 8 at 5 pm) and A Palace Called Home from Greece (to be screened at India Habitat Centre on the same day at 7 pm), 19 more films from countries like Germany, Luxembourg and Cyprus will be screened in the Capital from April 8 to April 20. "Over the course of 20 years, the festival has grown along with the European Union (EU). Back then, there were half the countries in the EU than there are now. The festival itself has grown in terms of the number of Indian cities that screen the films and the number of movies being shown," says Cesare Onestini, deputy head, Delegation of the EU to India. Since it's a special year for the organisers, the film's selection has also been different this time around. Onestini says, "In earlier editions, the focus was on the theme. Past festivals have had youth-centric or women-centric films but this time around, we have chosen to focus on the recent films of European nations. There is a brighter distribution of topics this year." Many popular and critically-acclaimed films are part of the festival this year - the most prominent being Polish film Ida, which won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It will be screened on April 18 at Instituto Cervantes at 5 pm. What is special about this festival, adds Onestini, is that films from all over the European region are represented at the event. "The audience might be familiar with films from the UK, France or Italy, but with this festival they get to watch films from smaller countries as well." The festival will be held across Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and Jodhpur over the next four months. In Delhi, the films will be screened at Instituto Cervantes and A still from Oscar-winning film Ida. India Habitat Centre.

Best of EU films set to regale the city 1st April.’15 There is no better way to learn about a country than through the films made on it or

even shot there. The upcoming European Union Film Festival will also provide a

chance to Delhiites, to experience Europe in the heart of India!

The rich cultural diversity of the European Union will be displayed at the 20th edition of EU Film Festival through a cinematic prism. A repertoire of 21 award-winning European films will be screened at three different venues in the city - Instituto Cervantes, Hungarian Information and Cultural Centre and India Habitat Centre. Organised by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of Member States, in partnership with Federation of Film Societies of India, the festival will begin in Chennai and travel to Delhi, to be followed by Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and Jodhpur over the next four months. The selection of films includes all genres such as comedy, drama, romance and action to narrate the charming and sometimes unsettling stories. For instance, the festival will narrate the story of 11-year-old Freddy, a cyclist who hopes to win a race and thereby meets one of his heroes. There is also a story of two opera directors who have a common passion for music, matched by their thirst for love. These stories will bring alive European life in Delhi. “Through films, sitting in a darkened hall in front of a screen, we can laugh together, relive history, explore the beauty of distant landscapes and celebrate what makes us human,” says Dr João Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union. He too says that films portray glimpses of the life and times of people while breaking the barriers of language. “The European Union film festival through its 20 years of journey in India has provided an ideal bridge between two vibrant cultural scenes with rich film traditions and has developed into a significant annual event in the calendar of film aficionados,” adds the ambassador who will inaugurate the festival. Starting on April 8, the EU Film Festival will go on till April 20 in the Capital. On the first day, the festival will begin at Instituto Cervantes in Connaught Place. The inaugural film will be Pizzas (Latvia), which is a story of two pizza bakers – Oskars and Matīss. They have huge plans for the future but one evening their lives are turned upside down. Find out what happens. Also screened will be Go, Eddy! Allez Eddy (Belgium). This is a story of 11-year-old cycling talent Freddy whose participation in a cycling race opens up a new world, not only for him, but also for all those surrounding him. The Foreigner (Bulgaria) is a romantic comedy about a Frenchman who falls in love with a hot tempered Bulgarian village girl. Following the call of his heart he starts looking for the village where she lives without knowing the character and the language of the people living there. Vis-À-Vis (Croatia) brings together the story of a filmmaker on the island of Vis, wanting to find out if he made a good choice in

choosing his main cast. Due to the island’s isolation during winter, the two of them are unexpectedly faced with their own frustrations, which intertwine with the film’s plot in a strange way. In the romantic comedy section, Committed (Cyprus) is a must watch. It is a story about a man who takes to the road to escape the pressure of proposing to his girlfriend, only to come across a bride who has just run out on her wedding. On the contrary, The Don Juans (Czech Republic) is an amusing satire filled with sensual imagery that tells the story about love and disillusion, music and passion; story about the world of opera unmasked and stripped of its glamour, and of the people caught in between. One must also watch The Keeper of Lost Causes (Denmark), which is the story of 18-year-old Caspar who wants to reach the top, no matter what. The entry to all the films is free and the schedule can be accessed at: https://www.facebook.com/events/658619437599454/

EU Film Festival to be held across eight Indian cities 28th March.’15 The rich cultural diversity of the European Union and its Member States will be on display in its myriad hues at the 20th European Union Film Festival that begins in Chennai on 31 March. The festival brings to India a repertoire of 21 latest and award winning European films from as many countries. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of Member States in partnership with local organisations including the Federation of Film Societies of India, the festival will traverse through Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Coimbatore and Jodhpur over the next four months. Celebrating 20 years of bringing European cinema to India, the festival will screen movies from varied genres including comedy, drama, romance and action - many charming and sometimes unsettling stories. The festival will tell the story of eleven year old Freddy, a cyclist who hopes to win a race and thereby meets one of his heroes; of two opera directors whose common passion for music is matched by their thirst for love; of a man who runs away from his girlfriend but collides with a bride who has run away from her wedding; of a woman whose life in a mansion somehow mirrors the turbulent changes of an entire century; of a boy who makes unexpected friends while investigating the death of his parents in a car accident; and of the happy householder with the perfect marriage who finds love - or maybe something else – with a choreographer who loves her cooking. Speaking about the success of the European Union Film festival in India, European Union ambassador Dr Joao Cravinho said, “Through films, sitting in a darkened hall in front of a screen, we can laugh together, relive history, explore the beauty of distant landscapes and celebrate what makes us human. Films give us glimpses into the life and times of people they portray and help break barriers of languages to bring people together across the world. Thus, it is heartening to see that the European Union film festival through its 20 years of journey in India has provided an ideal bridge between two vibrant cultural scenes with rich film traditions and has developed into a significant annual event in the calendar of film aficionados. This year we have decided to bring latest films from Europe to celebrate the 20th anniversary and we hope that the viewers will enjoy it as much as they have enjoyed our earlier editions.” EUFF dates and venues will be announced in the coming days.

About the European Union (EU):

The EU, which consists of 28 countries, has the world’s largest economy and its third largest population, after China and India. Though richly diverse, the countries that make up the EU (its ‘Member States’) are all committed to the same basic values: peace, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. They have set up common institutions so that decisions on matters of joint interest can be made democratically at European level. By creating a frontier-free single market and a single currency (the euro) which has been adopted by 18 Member States, the EU has given a significant boost to trade and employment. It is also at the forefront of policies on sustainability. EU-India relations

Over 50 years the EU and India have worked together to reduce poverty, prevent disasters, expand trade, and promote joint research in energy, health, agriculture and many other fields of mutual interest. More information at: http://eeas.europa.eu/delegations/india

Chennai to host 20th EU Film Festival for next 10 days 31st March.’15 --21 European Films || From 21 European countries || 20 years of delighting Indian

fans –

The rich cultural diversity of the European Union and its Member States will be on display in its myriad hues at the 20th European Union Film Festival that began today in Chennai. The festival brings to Chennai a repertoire of 21 latest and award winning European films from as many countries. The European Union Film Festival (EUFF) was inaugurated by Dr. M. Rajaram, IAS, Secretary to Government, Tamil Development and Information Department, Government of Tamil Nadu in the presence of Dr. Bart De Groof, Consul General of the Kingdom of Belgium with the screening of the Latvian film Pizzas at the Alliance Française of Madras. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of Member States with the support of the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) in Chennai, the EUFF will be held at the Alliance Française from 31st March to 4th April and at Goethe Institut Chennai / Max Mueller Bhavan from 5th to 10th April. Speaking about the success of the European Union Film festival in India, H. E. Dr João Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union, said: “Through films, sitting in a darkened hall in front of a screen, we can laugh together, relive history, explore the beauty of distant landscapes and celebrate what makes us human.

About the European Union (EU): The EU, which consists of 28 countries, has the world’s largest economy and its third largest population, after China and India. EU-India relations Over 50 years the EU and India have worked together to reduce poverty, prevent disasters, expand trade, and promote joint research in energy, health, agriculture and many other fields of mutual interest. Chennai To Host “EU FILM FESTIVAL” for next 10 Days. 31st March.’15 The rich cultural diversity of the European Union and its Member States will be on display in its myriad hues at the 20th European Union Film Festival that began today in Chennai. Bart De Groof, Consul General of the Kingdom of Belgium with the screening of the Latvian film Pizzasat the Alliance Française of Madras. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of Member States with the support of the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) in Chennai, the EUFF will be held at the Alliance Française from 31st March to 4th April, and at Goethe Institut Chennai/ Max Mueller Bhavan from 5th to 10th April. Celebrating 20 years of bringing European cinema to India, the festival will screen movies from varied genres including comedy, drama, romance and action – many charming and sometimes unsettling stories. The festival will tell the story of eleven year old Freddy, a cyclist who hopes to win a race and thereby meets one of his heroes; of two opera Directors whose common passion for music is matched by their thirst for love; of a man who runs away from his girlfriend but collides with a bride who has run away from her wedding; of a woman whose life in a mansion somehow mirrors the turbulent changes of an entire century; of a boy who makes unexpected friends while investigating the death of his parents in a car accident; and of the happy householder with the perfect marriage who finds love – or maybe something else – with a choreographer who loves her cooking. This year we have decided to bring latest films from Europe to celebrate the 20thanniversary and we hope that the viewers will enjoy it as much as they have enjoyed our earlier editions.”
