When it comes to terrorism, it is quite routine for the mainstream media to pub-lish speculator news reports. If one reads that news, anyone can deduce that these reports betray what is called as ‘Islamophobia’.
Especially after 1993 news connecting terrorism and Bhatkal town is being pub-lished continually in the news media. After 2010 Muslim predominant Azamghad of Uttarpradesh is being termed as ‘Athankghad’. During 2011 Bihar is colossally pub-licized as another Azamghad’ In fact many youths arrested allegedly for terrorism activities belonged to Darbanga, Samastipur and Madhubani of Bihar where Muslim population predominates. It is another issue that there were no charge sheets nor an-ything is proved of those arrested? When it relates to terrorism the media instead of investigating the truth, most of the time publishes stories for mere sensation. There are many other reasons for the publication of false stories in the media.
Most of the reporters while reporting stories on terrorism instead of collecting the information from the investigating team or police head rely upon the smatter-ings doled out by hawaldars or constables. Another reason being carried over by the reports in the global media!
Bhatkal Town is also a victim of such propaganda. Bhatkal town which remains peaceful otherwise, right from 1993 due to the machinations of the media attained notoriety. This has caused immense psychological trauma to its peaceful residents. This has tended to lower the self esteem of its youth who are hesitant to reveal their identity in another town.
Students Islamic organization of India had brought out a detailed analytical re-port titled “Media and Terror: facts and fiction” on the media sensation and reports carried by the state media when few youths of Bangalore were arrested on terrorism charges during the previous year. Our Media watch team brings out another publi-cation by analyzing the media reports on Bhatkal and its multi ethnic peace loving populace. We are thankful to Mr. Azhar Pilakodan and Abu Nusaiba Koppal in edit-ing its contents. We acknowledge the cooperation extended by Sahil Online, Naseef Bhatkal and all other friends.

BhAtKAl the town of Surreal Beaches
llAzharuddin Pilakkud
Away from the din of the city and the curling smoke from industrial chimneys, Bhatkal is one of the fascinating towns to explore and
rejuvenate the mind and the soul.
Bhatkal is wedged between the lofty Sayhadri Mountains (Western Ghats) and the azure Arabian Sea. Bhatkal, situated in the district of Uttar Kannada (North Canara) in the state of Karnataka, India, is also a little paradise.
While the culture of the denizens of this picturesque vibrant town, is of mixed origin – the two significant strands being the Arab and local lifestyle. The Nawayath community here has catapulted this town to international fame for all good reasons. Bhatkal is a prosperous town with old quaint houses sharing space along with modern designer mansions and elegant shopping complexes. Steeped in history, abounding in edicts, monuments reflecting the glory of bygone era. The thriving town is a canvas of peace, affluence and piety.
HistoryBhatkal holds a very significant place in the history of our nation. Bhatkal
witnessed the rise and fall of several dynasties and rulers. Bhatkal was a part and parcel of Hoysala Empire from 1291 to 1343 before falling into the hands of the Vijayanagara Empire.
Many rulers tried to gain control over this town by hook and crook. Paradoxical thought it may seem, very little is known about the history of this place prior to the 12th century A.D. except a few stray references here and there. It was a stupendous task to reconstruct the history of the town. Notwithstanding these facts there is a conclusive evidence which goes to prove that Bhatkal was a part and parcel of the Hoysala Empire for more than
6
50 years during the rule of Ballal III from 1291 to 1343.
The rulers of Vijayanagara Empire administered Bhatkal with Honnavar as the headquarters.
Varthema, the Italian traveller speaks very highly of Bhatkal. In his words, Bhatkal was a noble city, very beautiful; Bhatkal was among the top-ranking centers of trade and commerce in the Vijayanagara Empire.
After the disintegration of Vijayanagara Empire, the Saluva Rulers of Haduvalli brought this coveted town under their rule.
Thus the dawn of 15th century marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Bhatkal. Many temples and bastis came to be constructed here during Chennabhaira Devi’s rule. It is a matter of great pride to us to recall that the eminent scholar like Akalanka II, who was the mentor of the renowned Kannada grammarian Bhattakalanka (1598) was a great son of this locality.
From Keladi rulers, Bhatkal passed on to Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan from whom it came under the British in 1799.
Bhatkal did not lag behind when compared to its counterparts in our struggle for freedom as in other parts of the country. The historic Quit India procession was taken place here during the second week of 1942.
There were two divisions of Canara in November 1800 – Northern and Southern; Bhatkal was in the northern division. In 1871, both the divisions merged to emerge as a single division. In 1862, the single division was again divided into two districts – Uttar Kannada with Bhatkal Pethe being transferred into the Bombay presidency. In 1960 – Bhatkal was elevated as a taluk.
DemographicsBhatkal had a population of approximately 110,000 as per 2011 census.
Bhatkal has an average literacy rate of 83% higher than the national average
7
of 59.5%; with male literacy of 88% and female literacy of 78%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Muslim Nawayathis predominant in Bhatkal. The people of Bhatkal are typically called “Bhatkallies” and have spread afarsince the 1960s, including UK, US, Australia but more so across the Middle East especially Bahrain, UAE and Saudi.
Origin of NawayathsNawayaths are migrants predominantly from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and
fewer from Persia who married into another trading community of India, the Jains more than 1000 years ago.
SettlementsThe settlements comprise clusters of old structures in compact areas and
are called Saiys. In every street there is a mosque catering to the spiritual needs of the devout inhabitants.
cultureThe traditional dress code of Nawayath men consists of Kurta, Lungi
and Topi. Their ladies have opted for the local Indian way of dressing. Notwithstanding this, full Purdah is a must for women. They are light skinned and good looking people. They are very religious people. There are around 100 mosques in the town.
Nawayaths of Bhatkal do not go in for intercaste marriages. Marriages are conducted as laid down in the laws of Islam. It is gratifying to note that the obnoxious and much- hated dowry system has not raised its dirty head in the Nawayath community and has been strictly prohibited.
LanguageThe community speaks a dialect called “Nawayathi”. It is an amalgam of
8
Portuguese, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, Marathi and Hindi with Konkani as its base. The script is Urdu and Persia.
FoodThe traditional food of the Nawayath has always been rice, fish and meat.
Seafood has been the mainstay of the Nawayathi diet for centuries.
Dishes forming part of the Bhatkallies cuisines;
Bhatkali Biriyani
Mudkale
Navari……..
Most of their foods are mainly adopted from the surrounding regions including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and other parts of India.
TourismBhatkal has been quite a hustling spot mainly because of various ancient
mosques and temples. The town is considered as a Spiritual town. The world famous Shiva Statue is located near Bhatkal.
Visitors to Bhatkal go back carrying with them pleasant memories of the flora and fauna, the surreal beaches, archeological treasures at Bhatkal speak volumes about the history of Bhatkal and they sketch its rich heritage. The entire Bhatkal beach area with a fishing port and a lighthouse atop a hillock offers a breathtaking view. Tourism is one of the important source of revenue.
EducationThe Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen spear – headed the long drawn battle
against illiteracy. A wide range of educational institutions ranging from the kindergarten schools to the professional colleges have come into being.
Many religious schools are established in Bhatkal. Jamia – Islamia is the premier and prestigious college for Islamic learning for boys which attracts students from far and wide. Jamiat-u-Salihath is an institution meant for girls.
9
When the Anjuman Hami-e- Muslimeen, the pioneering education trust at Bhatkal was twenty years old, Bhatkal saw the birth of yet another trust which embraced upon its soil to fulfill the needs of the Kannada speaking people.
communal ViolenceBhatkal known for its communal tension between Hindu and Muslim
community has on various occasions seen communal riots dating from 1968, 1978, 1985, and 1996. The tension has never panned down because of the demographics of the town mainly.
In 1996 communal violence erupted due to killing of Dr. Chttaranjan, Member of Legislative Assembly.
This resulted in the communal polarization of the Bhatkal society.
Political StructureThough it is a taluk, there is a special privilege of having Assistant
Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner Police. There are 23 wards in the taluk. Most of the wards are Muslim majority wards. Before election, people of the particular ward decide the candidate for the coming elections.
conclusionBhatkal is the symbol of population and unity in diversity. It is the mixture
of various cultures and traditions. Unfortunately evil forces polarized the society for vested interests. Vote bank politics had created hate and vengeance among the common people of Bhatkal. In the name of terrorism Muslim community is targeted. Number of innocent youths are arrested and missing from the town. This scenario polluted the beauty of the town as well as the minds of the people.
It’s time to wake up and rise against the fascist communal forces!!!

Has someone ever read the aforesaid names in the newspapers that have been chanting the names of Riyaz Bhatkal, Yasin Bhatkal and
Iqbal Bhatkal from past several years? How many articles, news reports, breaking news and discussions with titles like ‘Bhatkal: India’s Terror Capital “or “Bhatkal: A gateway for Jehadi terrorists’ have not been published in the media so far?
How many times did “Bhatkal” was not used as a synonym for the terrorism in our country? How many times did the media-reports not try to portray Bhatkal as a city of Muslim country like Pakistan or Afghanistan? “Bhatkal was used as a laboratory by the Jehadi terrorists to experiment and test their logistical, personal and infrastructural facilities to carry on their nefarious activities with diabolical intentions”- This was not written in any anonymous pamphlet having no address, but by the web media.
A media report said, “The RDX used for 1993 Mumbai serial blasts was first hidden in the Bhatkal and then transported to Mumbai via Ratnagiri”. The mastermind of that logistic was Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was killed in a fake encounter in Gujrat, it further added. It was also published that the rich

Nawayati Muslims are forcing local Hindus out of town to make Bhatkal as a Muslim city.
A ‘researched’ media-report once claimed that “Pakistan Zindabad, India Murdabad” (Long live Pakistan, Down Down India) was written on the walls on 26th Jan. (India’s Republic day) in Bhatkal. The media also declared that the Bhatkal has become the shelter for the Dawood Ibrahim’s aides and for the agents of ISI Pakistan.
In 2008 a news-report claimed that the Karnataka Police has raided Indian Mujahideen’s hide-out in Bhatkal and seized pro-Taliban videos. The media-report went on claiming that Osama Bin Laden had spent some time in the Bhatkal; and also that the CIA had carried out a secret investigation here in 2010.
On Sep 12, 2012, one of the Kannada dailies claimed that the mosques of the Bhatkal town are the terrorist hubs; bombs and RDXs are being supplied from here. This outrageous caused such an outrage among the people that there was a Bandh (Shut Down) declared on Oct 11, 2012 in Bhatkal. People from all the faiths supported the Bandh. Media-persons, Police officers and VIPs of the city were invited to visit the mosques. The media-report was subsequently condemned by one and all.
The fact is that, surnames like Riyaz Bhatkal, Yasin Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal, are strange to the people of this town. ‘Bhatkal’ was never a surname of any community here. Muslims of Bhatkal are identified by surnames like, Sayeedi, Shaabandri, Shingati, Siddi Ahmed, Siddibaapa, Ikkeri, Chadka, Akrami, Damoodi, Askeri, Aidroos, Delwi, Yusufji, Fakibaav, Gavayi, Jukaku, Kaak Mohiddeen, Khazi, Kola, Muhtesham, Kuresh, and Ruknuddin etc.
How many media that have been carrying names of Riyaz, Yasin and Iqbal from last eight years, have written about the aforementioned names of the town?, or have introduced them to the society? Aftab Kola is the editor of Times of Oman; Noor Muhammad Delwi is Depuy General Manager
12
of Indian Telecom Dept.; Syed Khaleel is the Executive Director of I&M Galadari group; Abdul Mateen Ikkeri is MD and Chairman of the Amtech industries; Kais Shabandri is a scientist in BioCon; Muhammad Sameer Kaak Muhyuddin is senior manager of Etisalat Telecommunications in UA; Kashim Ji is the president of Bhatkal Urban Co-operative Bank; and Savood is the CEO of famous Mohtesham Developers.
Do the media, which is keen to portray Yasin, Riyaz and Iqbal as the cultural, social and economical ambassadors of the Bhatkal and that the Bhatkal has no other face other than them, aware of the fact that late A.K. Hafeezkaar (former MLA of Bombay and India’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia in 1977) was from Bhatkal?
How many newspapers have introduced to its readers the Late S.M.Yahya, who held important cabinet portfolios like Finance and Education in Karnataka Ministry, was from Bhatkal?
Bhatkal also has a rich face; not mere financial richness, but of harmony and cultural uniqueness. Bhatkal Town has the least number of juvenile criminals in the country. Bhatkal has Islamic banking that gives interest free loans to Muslims as well as to the non-Muslims. Bhatkal Urban co-operative bank has over 25000 accounts and it brings in a huge amount of foreign income to our country.
While the Majlis e Islamee Tanzeem is famous for its social service works in Bhatkal, the Anjuman Engineering College is well-known for the technical education in India.
Out of sixty thousand population of the town, the Muslims are in the majority, and at least one member of every household works in abroad. Interestingly, this fact is being projected detrimentally by the media. The Burkha worn by Muslim women and existence of 38 mosques in the town are tangentially referred by the media to substantiate its claims.
13
Going by the media narrations, it will be difficult to imagine the existence of Hindu places of worship like Parashavantha temple, Keta Payya Narayana temple, Joshi Shankar Narayana temple, Choleshwara and other temples in the Bhatkal town!!!
What is wrong if Bhatkal men work in America, Britain, European countries, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, or in any other part of the world? Why didn’t the media mention in their report the fact that India receives a huge amount of foreign earned income through Co-operative Bank of Bhatkal.
There are engineers and doctors in Bhatkal; the ‘Bhatkal Times’ is being published since 1990 under the editorship of Aftab Husain Kola; well-known news-portal “Sahil Online” is being published from Bhatkal; periodicals like Nanakshe Nawayat and Al Ittehaad are also being published from here; why the media-reports, which always ‘shows’ Burkha, do not show this face of Bhatkal?
Why the cultural and educational developments of this town are not discussed in the media? Established in 1968, the Anjuman College of Arts, Commerce and Science is a well known institution across the country today. It has contributed to the society by educating thousands of students.
In spite of that, the media behaved as if Bhatkal means Yasin Bhatkal even though a single case is not registered against him in the Bhatkal; it potrayed Bhatkal as a terror hub. Is it fair?
Residents of Bhatkal use Mumbai or Mangaluru airports to travel overseas.
But, soon after media started linking act of terror to Bhatkal, every commuter has been undergoing intensive checks at the airports. Officers look at every Bhatkal man as if he is elder or younger brother of Yasin or Riyaz. Frustrated with that, now Bhatkal men are taking different routes viz Goa, Lucknow or Hyderabad to travel abroad. Who is responsible for all this? Is it
14
Riyaz who never born, brought up or lived in Bhatkal ? or the media?
Bhatkal has great history. It is said that, Bhatkal was named after a Jain king Bhattakalanka. Muslims of Bhatkal are commonly known as Navaytis. Writer Jafar Shareef in his book “Nawayate Islam” (1832), and Colonel Willis in his book “History of Mysore”(1930) have meant Nawayat as “new comers/people”.
According to noted historian Abu Sayeed Bin Abubakar Zamani, Nawayatis belong to “Naat”group of Yeman. Some opine that the Nawayatis might have come from Iraq, Iran and Yemen.
There is a reason to say that they have migrated from Iraq to this coastal area during the rule of Abdul Malik Marwan. Most of their surnames resemble that of Arabs. Amudi in Saudi Arabia is Damoodi in Bhatkal; Faqi is found both in Saudi Arabia and Bhatkal. Qatar’s Al Sadaa is Bhatkal’s Sada.
Historian Khwaja Bahauddin in his “Arab e Diyare Hind” has in detail discussed about the surnames of Bhatkal. The Nawayatis have distinctive matrimonial culture wherein they do not marry outside their community.
The Nawayati language is blended with the charm and fragrance of the Persian, Arabic, Marathi, and Konkani languages. The Nawayati food is also unique. Bhatkali biriyani is very famous. While rice, fish, wheat, egg are commonly consumed, Nawayatis prepare culturally significant special varieties of food like Mudukale, Nevri, Godan, Goa Godan, Muga Godan, Amatya Godan. Macroni Godan, Puttu, Kubusapoli, Chappi Poli, Madaku Kolkattai, Adharasam, Paniyam, Terlos, Bandhuli, Shayya Biriyani, Manni, Goda Appo, etc.
Five or seven people share a single plate called Supra, has cultural prominence. Nothing is special about their dressing; lungi, shirt, skull-cap, kurta-paijama, is common dress.
Ironically, the media, which always tried to see everything through Riyaz’s
15
eyes, could not distinguish such beautiful facets of this town. For media, Bhatkal’s historic background, cultural traditions, food diversities were not worth reporting.
Even though none of Riyaz, Yasin and Iqbal lived in Bhatkal, the media devoted Bhatkal town into their feet. They wrote as if there exist no Bhatkal without them. Bhatkal is also famous for the Shayaris; well-known poets like Muhammad Hussain Fitrat, Payam Sayeedi, Hazrath Bhatkali, Syed Abubakar Maliki, Haneef Shabab, Kausar Jafari, belong to Bhatkal. The melodic town was depicted as the town of blasts. The poems being written here were described as if RDX was being produced.
In fact, Bhatkal is a unique kind of flower bloomed in the seaside of this nation. Instead of exploring its milieu, exclusivity, attainments, and fragrance, the media called it a thorn. The thorn was later given a weird appearance and was spread wherever was possible.
Consequently, the entire Bhatkal episode in turn has exposed how miserably media has failed. Bhatkal stands as a classical exemplar for how worst can be the journalism. The truth, justice, honesty, social responsibility, accuracy and other journalistic values almost breathed its last here. All credits go to the media. Riyaz, Yasin, Iqbal didn’t commit anything here in Bhatkal, but media did everything. Yet, it is neither guilty nor shamed. How can the terrorism can be defined in this context? Can we still negate the subsistence of ‘letter terrorism’ that is similar to the bomb terrorism? What is the penalty for these terrorists who are in the guise of journalists? Who will reprimand them?
16
Bhatkal is a small town located in the North Canara district of Karnataka. It is popularly known as ‘Mini Dubai’, or ‘Mini Pakistan’. Media (un)
popularized it as the birth place of Indian Mujahedeen. Bhatkal came to focus after the Hyderabad Blasts.
BJP has ample support in this region. The region is a communally sensitive region. Sangh Parivar and its umbrella organizations polarized the society to create vote bank for BJP.
The residents of the town are aggrieved that their town is being viewed as the breeding ground of terrorists – courtesy bad press owing to Yasin, Iqbal and Riyaz, alleged Indian Mujahedeen operatives who are known as “Bhatkal Brothers”.
In fact, people are wary of identifying themselves as residents of Bhatkal, for the fear that they may be looked upon with suspicion. The town has grown into a linking town between Mangalore and Mumbai and a lot of educational institutes have come up here. People residing outside this town are not interested in working in these institutions owing to the bad reputation Bhatkal has got. Advertisements for vacancies see no response.
“We are pained that the media are projecting the name ‘Bhatkal’ in a negative way by suffixing the name of the town against the names of the terror elements,” said Inayathullah Shabhandri.
Dubbing the terrorists as “Bhatkal Brothers” has caused more than just psychological damage to the town. Earlier, buses going from Kerala to Mumbai used to stop in Bhatkal and passengers used to savor the special
Defamed Town - Bhatkal ? Azharuddin Pilakodan, Virajpet
17
Bhatkal Biryani, but now the buses don’t stop in the town. Now, they stop in Kundapur or Honnavar. Owing to this, many eateries in Bhatkal had to close down their business, says the town’s businessman.
Surendra Shanbhag of Seva Vahini, a social organization, said the brothers’ surname is not ‘Bhatkal’ and he did not know that the town’s name became linked to theirs.
Bhatkal got the terror tag after police and ATS of several states named brothers Riyaz, Iqbal Shabhandri and Mohammad Ahmad Siddibapa alias Yasin, with links to the town as suspects in several blasts starting 2008, and identified them as co-founders of the IM.
A Kannada paper recently reported that 10 mosques of Bhatkal were “Bomb-making factories”. Another earlier had written that Osama Bin Laden often visited Riyaz’s home and trained him in making bombs. National dailies talked of the Karnataka police raiding IM hideouts in Bhatkal in October 2008 and finding pro-Taliban videos. Last October, Fasih Mahmood, who had studied engineering in Bhatkal, was deported from Saudi Arabia and arrested for links with Yasin(Indian Express).
The then SP of Uttara Kannada K T Balakrishna, disagrees with what he calls a “carefully crafted image” of Bhatkal. “I don’t know how Bhatkal got this image of the birthplace of Islamic Terrorism. I am yet to find anything. Even the IM founders never lived here. They lived in Maharashtra”.
Former BJP Minister Sadashiv Naik says: “I don’t know what those three did or what the charges are against them, but there were none and there are no sleeper sells here. No Islamic Terrorism.”
According to the editor of a local online news portal, Sahilonline, Bhatkal was maligned on account of whatever was fed by the Maharashtra ATS. “How many journalists who write about Bhatkal have visited here? They simply reproduce what is fed to them,” says Editor Inayathullah Gawai.
18
There were no any riots except in 1993 which claimed 17 lives. Congress Ex-MLA JD Naik, who lives in a Muslim locality says “there is no terrorism here. IB and media created it... Three men are named, but they hardly lived or did anything here. The Maharashtra ATS has made baseless claims about the secret meetings…”
Media in a very well planned manner defamed the name of the town. Today, Bhatkal is considered as the breeding place for all terror activities taking place in India.
Important questions to put forward are:
If Bhatkal is added to Yasin and Riyaz because they belong to Bhatkal but are other suspects called or known by their place? If Bhatkal is used for Yasin then why not for other terror suspects?
The prime function of media is to question the Government and its agencies to bring out the truth. But when it comes to Muslims and Islam media believes and publishes all the stories which are told by investigating agencies. Is it not Partial and biased?
19
Terrorism is an evergreen topic for discussion and debate. After 9/11, terrorism became a global phenomenon being discussed in all forums of
governments. World super powers declared war on terror and accumulated huge amount of wealth from third world countries. Weapon industry becomes the most profitable business. War was commoditized and people suffered a lot. Capitalist conglomerates gained profit over profit but poor people got only sufferings. In the name of terrorism a stereotype has been made against Islam and global Muslim community.
We are living in the age of information. We are able to access information on our finger tips. This age is high-tech where not only coffee is instant; communication too is instant. Media and other information tools play a vital role in our modern society. The very subject “Terrorism” opened an arena for discussion among the common people of the country. Many writers and intellectuals used it to defame Islam and Muslims. But on the other side, people started studying Islam and today in the West, Islam is the fastest growing religion.
At global scenario media played this game very badly. The readership of newspapers increased, viewers of TV channels doubled, hits on websites multiplied. The “terror fact” helps the media conglomerates to amass huge profit. In modern world, Media is the power which manipulates the minds of the people. In the morning, along with a coffee we read a newspaper which tells us what to think, what to do and so on.
In India, 748 private television channels are owned and controlled by one or the other corporate companies. Arundathi Roy once said; “corporate companies or capitalists are the next rulers of India”. Today, to a great extent India is ruled by corporates. They dictate the economic policies of the country.
Terrorism and Media Manipulation
20
When media houses report terror cases, the language it uses is of ‘conclusive’ speculations over the involvement of particular groups long before the official reports/statements are issued by the investigating officer or the Forensic Team that is looking into the evidence.
‘Bhatkal’ is a very popular name in cases related to terror. The word is catchy and attractive. Media reported that ‘Bhatkal is the Heaven for terrorists’ (Deccan Herald 26-5-2010).
On 24th of May 2010, Abdul Sammad Zarar Siddibapa was arrested by ATS Maharashtra from Mangalore Airport. The charges against him were that he was involved in the Pune German Bakery Blast of 2009. On 25th, media comes with a story that Sammad was a key suspect of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Within a period of one week he becomes a prime suspect in five cases. This is how media played it. (Refer media reports)
The case is one among the thousands of cases related to terror and arrest of innocent youths. Muslim youths were targeted by media and Government of India. When we look into the media reports word by word it is very clear that the terror case reports don’t need news or stories but all it needs is well manipulated scripts.
The largest selling English daily declared “terrorist”, a suspect who was only an accused and charges against him were yet to be fixed, whose trail had not yet started, who was yet to be declared an offender by the court. The investigating agencies caught him on the basis of suspicion, but media declared him a ‘terrorist’ and he was given a capital punishment by criminals in the most protected place.
In normal cases our nation’s media, print or electronic, never believes in the story of police and intelligence agencies but when it comes to Muslim terror suspects, the same media becomes an amplifier of the police and intelligence agencies and not only does it believe in their version of stories but it puts a lot of spice in the story and forwards them in the direction fixed by the agencies.
In 2007 when Bangalore based Dr. Haneef was arrested for questioning
21
in a terror case in Australia, the whole Indian media was trying to gather evidences to prove him guilty while the Australian media was criticizing Australian government for the illegal detention of Haneef. When they didn’t find any proof, Australian government officially apologized to Dr. Haneef, gave him a good compensation and even offered him citizenship of the country. There was a complete blackout by Indian media of the news about the remedy steps by Australian government.
In the case of Abdul Sammad, media was very insensitive towards the facts of the case. In true sense Sammad was not arrested in Pune German Bakery blast case. His name was not mentioned in the charge sheet presented by ATS Maharashtra. He was detained for illegal arms smuggling case of 2009. ATS failed to produce any strong evidence to sustain their allegations and hence Sammad was granted bail. This was clearly stated by his counsel Mobeen Solkar.
Media becomes very biased in reporting cases related to terror. They target Muslim youths and this also results in the destruction of their life and career. Before reporting terror incidents media persons should look at their own clips of reporting on Malegaon, Hyderabad, Ajmer and Samjhauta Express bomb blasts. They should not become amplifiers of investigative agencies and police department. They should realize that, while investigating towards a certain community they are playing with the life of an accused and may commit an act of injustice as a whole.
Today media has turned into a corporate business but even business has some ethics. Insensitive journalism and irresponsible reporting not only destroys a family, defames a place, but also communalizes the society.
Partial journalism is more dangerous than Terrorism. Partial journalism can create havoc in the society. Today media and investigating agencies are hand in gloves. Media is a profit making business than service and fact finding agent. There is a strong need to regain the journalistic ethics and work with open mind and heart.

That’s not all! If you type “Bhatkal” in google just in 0.18 seconds nearly 36.6 lakh webpages will fall infront of you. It is not because of the fact that Bhatkal is a beautiful coastal place of North Karnataka but it is just a few samples to show how our media has made this place infamous in our country and abroad.
Two brothers- Riyaz and Iqbal- who infamously called as “Bhatkal Brothers” by media and investigation agencies, were born in Murudeshwar and they left Bhatkal city about 20 years ago. Afterall, their surname is not Bhatkal but Shabandri. Also the actual name of another notorious man YaseenBhatkal is Ahmed Siddhi Bappa. Similarly, Bhatkal was added to the name of Samad who was arrested at Bajpe airport, Mangalore on charges of main accused of Pune’s German bakery bomb blast in 2010.
Look at the few reports published during Samad’s arrest:

Why doesn’t Indore Become Bhatkal?
Bhatkal to police custody till 1st June (Samyukta Karnataka - 30th May 2010)
From the above headings doesn’t it look like the Bhatkal city itself is portrayed as terror instead of telling who the terrorist is?
As soon as Samad was arrested at Bajpe airport, media was keen to spread half-baked and exaggerated news just like any other terrorism cases.
A special report in Vijaya Karnataka “Cute faced Samad is the bomber!” dated May 30th 2010, has already given the ruling before any court. The statement of then Home Minister, P.Chidambaram that Samad is the main accused of Pune German bakery blast was published by all major newspapers. Furthermore, they also stated that he is the brother of YaseenBhatkal and that he is related to Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy stadium blast and said that he is going to be interrogated by the state police as well in few days. Later, just as it happens in most of the terrorism cases, in Samad’s casealso, the court released him on bail as there was no evidence against him. Also, DGP D.Shivanandan confessed that it was a mistake by Maharashtra Anti terrorism squad and he stated “Bomb blast was the first mistake and wrong investigation is the second”. Interesting thing is that,on what basis did the then Home Minister P.Chidambaram give his statement!
It is clear that there is a systematic plot which makes the Muslim majority city and a community to be viewed with suspicious eyes. We can see that citieslike Bhatkal, Azamghar of Uttar Pradesh have also become victim to this kind of suspicion.
Look at this title of Times of India -
”Azamgarh terror nursery back in focus” (Dec 10th, 2010)
Interesting thing is that, these two cities are Muslim majority cities and majority of Muslims of these cities work is Saudi or Dubai and are financially
24
good. The people of these cities are encountering situationsin which it has become difficult for them to get a visa to go abroad, to go to other cities to get education, to get a job and even to stay in a hotel. So, when people from these cities go to some other places, they hesitate to identify themselves with the name of their cities. Interestingly none of the Muslims in Bhatkal carry a surname “Bhatkal” yet this kind of behavior by media has caused displeasure among people there.
How many of us know about D.R.Nabala alias RanjanDaimare, the man who carried out serial bomb blasts on Oct 30th, 2008, which took more than 100 lives including Assam Rifles and Soldiers of BSF?.We have not heard his name itself, let alone knowing which city he belongs to. The media wrote a very little about this man who is the Head of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). Another interesting thing is, it is from Indore of Madhya Pradesh that the main accused of Malegaon, Ajmeer and Mecca masjid blasts were arrested. Also, it is to the same Indore that the probe of Samjhota Express blast case had reached. It is from the same Indore city,Sameer Kulakarni’sAbhinav Bharat has been conducting terrorist activities. But never ever any media hascalled Indore as “the heaven of Hindutva terrorism”. Nor did they add Indore to the names of SaadhwiPragya Singh Takore or Sameer Kulkarni. Yes, it is not at all acceptable to label Bhatkal or Indore as bad for the evils of few individuals of those cities, and anyone who kills innocent people and advocates violence is no doubt a devil irrespective of the religion, caste or community he belongs to. The very unfortunate thing about our country is that any incident easily becomes communal oris given political color. It is always repeated that there is no relation between religion and terrorism, but our newspapers, media and the police who are responsible for the protection of people themselves do not follow this policy.
It is now common that if any bomb blast or communal riots happen in any corner of the country, innocent Muslim youth are being targeted and
25
arrested without any evidences. Then, after spending their precious years of youth in jails with physical and mental torture, they get released finally after many years. But even after getting released they have to spend the rest of their life with the title of “terrorist” and the humiliation and psychological tension their familieshave to face is no less.
It is very unfortunate that these kind of incidents have become very common. In the past the hunting of innocent was carried out in the name of “Simi” and now the hunt is on in the name of “Indian mujahidin”. Recently few journalists and self service organizations have brought out the reality of these kind of fabricated cases.
Reporter of Indian Express wrote a series of investigative articles from September 25thto October 8th, 2012 about the suspected SimiActivists, released by courts in such cases. These articles appeared to be making fun of our Bureau of Investigation and police class. We do not know whether to laugh or cry by seeing that the security of our country is in the hands of such Irresponsible Idiots. Also, this article series is an eye opener for the news channels which publish such idiocy of investigation agency as breaking news and the newspapers that fill more fear in the hearts of common people.
Here are some of the titles in the investigative report series,
“A children’s magazine, newspaper, Urdu poetry anything can land you in jail”
Over a month, four “terror” arrests in Indore for “shouting slogans”
“2 years, 5 cities, 6 cases – and “proof ” everywhere is the same magazine”
What police found to arrest them as suspected Simi activists was not AK-47 but a copy of a children’s’ magazine “Umang” published by Urdu academy and in another case, a copy of DainikJagaran daily dated April 8th, 2008. Much more interesting is that it is the same copy of magazine (Teharik-A-Millat of
26
April 2004) that police produced in court as evidences for 6 different cases in different cities of the country for two yearscontinuously.
If it took so many years for these innocents to come out of jail even with this kind of weak evidences, it leaves one surprised at the performance of our judiciary system. If it had happened in one or two incidents we could have ignored it by saying that it is the mistake in the interrogation. But it has become common now. Arrest & release of a journalist ayear ago and recent release of youth who were arrested in charges of Malleshwaram blast and who got released by Supreme Court in Akshardhamcase testify this fact.
There are several reasons for this - Biased and communal mentality of our police system and media towards
a community.
Same way, inability of our police system and intelligence agencies to function properly because of political pressure. These facts have been explained by former IB Joint Director, MK Dhar in his controversial book “the open secret”.
And in Vanzara case of Gujarat it has become clear that some police officers can go to such a low level so as to carry out fake encounters to please their political gurus and get promoted.
Another important reason is that the police officers who created false evidences against innocents and charged cases are not punished.
In February 2011, Additional Session court of New Delhi acquitted 7 Kashmiri youth who were detained for such false cases and criticized sub inspector of Delhi police special cell along with 3 other police officers for creating false evidences. It further ordered to investigate those who brought bad name to whole Delhi police department and file FIR against them. Ironically instead of punishment, this same police officer RaveendraTyagi gets
27
honored by President’s medal in the coming days.
“Cops implicating innocents even went on to win President’s medal” (The Hindu, September 18th, 2012)
Therefore, there is no dearth of disasters caused by our police and investigation squads who fail to arrest real terrorists and arrest innocents, making them confess for the crime they have not committed by torturing them and the media too adds to this bycolorfully publishing the half-baked news floated by the police and investigation agencies.
According to the Britain’s former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, “Publicity is the oxygen of terrorism”. Therefore, when she was the Prime Minister, there was restriction on the police and investigation agencies from giving information to the media about the cases of terrorist acts carried out by Irish Red army.
But after September 11, 2001 attack because of anger of people and extreme pressure, America started sharing media, the moment to moment information about the Police and FBI investigation. So, in the coming days, in order to prove their existence, police and intelligence agencies started arresting innocents. Also, in order to increase TRP and to stay in the market of breaking news, media was under pressure to publish new stories each moment and withouteven thinking about the effects theystarted publishing news coming from different sources without any review. Therefore, the police and the media are doing what terrorists really want.
When the real terrorists whose profession is sowing poisonous seeds in people and killing innocents keep plotting crimes after each blasts, our police arrest innocent people and present them before the media as Indian Mujahidin, Lashkar-E-Tayba and HUJi members. And then the duty of these media is to promote these organizations in their prime-time and cause fear in the minds of people. It is well known how the live broadcast and minute to
28
minute news of media has helped the terrorists in 26/11 Mumbai attack.
In spite of all this, as a silver lining, there are some people who when reporting about the sensitive issue of terrorism, have complied with the ethics of press by looking beyond the boundaries of religion, caste and politics.
Therefore, inspite of hundreds of reports that deliberately tried to bring bad name to Bhatkal, there are some positive reports too infront of us,
Why ‘Bhatkal’ with terrorists name?(Prajavani Sep1st, 2013)
“Tag of terrorists’ haven damaging Bhatkal’s image” (DNA July 6th, 2012)
“Terror tag hurting Bhatkal” (Times of India September 12th, 2013)
In our country, we also have police officers like Hemant Karkare who took oath of eradicating terrorism from this nation and dedicated their precious lives for the country. Also there are Hindu brethren who struggle day and night for getting justice to the innocent Muslim youth rotting in jails. This is the Power of India.

RDX dump, warn policemen”. According to the story, “If police sources are to be believed a dump of explosive including RDX huge enough to target major south Indian cities is piled up in an unidentified house in the town.”
The report in Times of India further claimed that a joint team comprising personnel from the Anti-Terrorist Squad, Bangalore and Delhi Special police scoured Bhatkal town to identify the house, with the help of four terror suspects including one Nasir from Kerala, who is said to be the prime accused in the July 25, 2008 Bangalore serial blasts. The explosives from the Bhatkal dump, the report claimed, are believed to have been used in the Chinnaswamy Stadium blasts in 2010 and Delhi High Court last year, besides several other terror strikes across the country.
Police shocked! The day this story was published, a
Kannada daily Varthabharathi approached Mr. KT Balakrishna, Superintendent of Police- Uttara Kannada district, only to find him stunned. “Is the RDX dumping a kind of fertilizer to store like? How it is possible for a newspaper to make out, while the Central Intelligence, Police Department and other agencies them self are not aware of such thing? All this is nothing but to defame Bhatkal, he feels. I have been to Bhatkal several times but didn’t have any clue of that. It is all propaganda of the media. If that was the case I would have camped at Bhatkal town by now.” he reacted. He also dismissed the TOI report as baseless, fictitious and speculative. “Several such reports have flown
31
around in the past. This is the latest, and I request all the citizens not to pay heed to such reports” said the SP.
Mistake admitted at lastSome other Kannada and English dailies
too carried the concocted story. Finally the Times of India was compelled to issue a clarification for its ‘report’ on 26 March. Thanks to Varthabharathi for exposing the fake report.
Mission to Malign? This is not the first time that Bhatkal is
projected as terror hub by media. Fictitious reports are being published time and again undeterred, only to malign the Muslim Community by depicting Bhatkal as a terrorist centre. The prejudices have gone so deep that Bhatkal Muslims are being harassed even for issuance of passports. They are being harassed by Custom Officers at all the airports, the people allege.
Fed up of victimisation a delegation of Majlise Islah wa Tanzeem, Gulf Council and Bhatkal Muslim Jamaat Dubai led by Bhatkal Anjuman Hamiye Muslimeen President S.M.Sayed Khaleelur Rahman met Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Dy. Speaker of Rajya Sabha Mr. Rahman Khan to resolve their problems.
