The Carlsen Cello Foundation is a non-profit organization that has loaned instruments to young cellists for nearly twenty years

We recently sat down with Miriam Shames the

Foundationrsquos director to discuss cello acquisitions

the best pieces for cello and how you can help put

a cello in a childrsquos hand

Playing and studying the cello can be expensive Base model cellos can cost $2000 or more and terrific ldquostudentrdquo cellos can cost another $10000 to $15000 The Carlsen Cello Foundation provides a fine instrument while a recipient is actively studying giving serious and deserving students the opportunity to practice and perform on a cello that matches the quality of their study and growing talent

Miriam Shames is the Foundationrsquos director With a Masterrsquos Degree from Juilliard in Cello Performance Shames is no stranger to the expenses involved with the cello nor the beauty the instrument can bring While being involved in the Foundation she also works with cello students in her Seattle studio and has performed with such groups as the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Northwest Sinfonietta

Who is Carlsen

Ray Carlsen is a Seattle dermatologist who started taking cello lessons as an adult beginner in the early 1990s He immediately

became interested in going to auctions in London and New York and collecting older mostly European cellos Over the next two decades through his own purchases and some donated cellos his collection grew to its present ndash approximately 100 cellos that are loaned out to students Itrsquos a remarkable feat and a remarkable treasure in todayrsquos world

Why the Foundation

Besides being a player himself Dr Carlsen like so many was drawn to the particularly beautiful and human sound of the cello He also soon realized that an advancing student needed a cello beyond what was available through rentals the price of which is prohibitive The cello is enjoying a beloved place in the music world today evidenced by its huge popularity among younger students adult beginners its use in so many genres and its draw with audiences

The cellos are purchased or donated They are often restored in Seattle and then maintained by Rafael Carrabba of Rafael Carrabba Violins He is a world-renowned restorer of the most beautiful and rare string instruments

What is your favorite piece of cello

music

My usual answer is ldquowhatever Irsquom listening to right nowrdquo But of course there are the Bach Cello Suites and the Schubert ldquoCellordquo Quintet in C Major

John BianchiServantJohn is excited to be working again with Seattle Shakespeare Company where he appeared as Sebastian in The Tempest John received his MFA from Rutgers Universityrsquos Professional Actor Training Program and has called Seattle home for the last 20 years He has worked with many local theaters including Book-It Repertory Theatre ACT Theatre Seattle Public Theater Annex Theatre and Theater Schmeater among others Some favorite roles performed include Mr Pucci in Shersquos Come Undone Mr Elton in Emma DeFlores in The Changeling David in Santaland Diaries and all eight characters of the solo show 21A by Kevin Kling

Maya BurtonChorusMaya is honored to make her Seattle Shakespeare Company debut with Medea She grew up in Sunrise Florida and has worked with Florida Childrenrsquos Theatre as a teacher director and performer Her favorite productions with Florida Childrenrsquos Theatre include Hairspray (A Dynamite) and Spamalot (The Lady of the Lake) She is a recent graduate of Cornish College of the Arts Some of her performances with Cornish include Singinrsquo in the Rain (Cosmo Brown) Quixote Book One (Dorotea) and Twelfth Night or What You Will (Olivia) She is currently working on making a bigger better bolder version of her and Lexi Chipmanrsquos original play Raisins in a Glass of Milk

Peter CrookKreonPeter previously appeared with Seattle Shakespeare Company as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and King Richard in Richard II He recently alternated the roles of Prospero and Caliban in New City Theaterrsquos production of The Tempest His more than twenty years of Seattle performing began as a company member of Seattle Repertory Theatre Other favorite credits include Angels in America (Intiman Theatre) Mary Stuart (ACT Theatre) and Cabaret ( Village Theatre)

Donald ByrdChoreographerDonald is the Executive Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theater a TONY-nominated and Bessie Award-winning choreographer His career has been long complex and his choreographic and theatrical interests are broad The New York Times says of him ldquoa choreographer with multiple personalities an unabashed eclectic Yet he does more than hop like a magpie from style to style taking any subject matter and imagery he finds along the way that strike his fancy His unruliness is accompanied by a love of orderhellip[he] is preoccupied with harmony and disruptionrdquo Donald has been referred to as a ldquocitizen artistrdquo a descriptive that aligns with his work at Spectrum Dance Theater dance as an art form and as a socialcivic instrument He has traveled extensively and loves Jerusalem and Bali

Shenandoah DavisComposerShenandoah is a Seattle-based musician and composer She holds a degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Northern Colorado has released two albums of original material and performs regularly around town She has completed artist residencies at the Art Monastery in Calvi dellrsquoUmbria Italy and in Fairfield IA through an Iowa Artistrsquos Grant She is currently working on a third record of new songs and is thrilled to be making her debut as a composer for theater with this production of Medea

Rachel DelmarAssistant DirectorRachel is excited to be back at Seattle Shakespeare Company after assistant directing Titus Andronicus last season She received her degree in Theatre and Greek Classics from the University of Southern California and has since worked around the country as an actor director teaching artist producer and marketer Some favorites include Seattle Vice YPP at ACT Theatre

1448 Arcadia at Seattle Public Theater and For Christmas mdash a new play developed by Rachelrsquos company Playing in Progress Through Playing in Progress she has spent the last 5 years producing opportunities for playwrights actors directors and artists to gather together and develop new work most notoriously through SnowGlobed (an evening of holiday-inspired scenes and spectacles) that takes place every December

Maria GrayAssistant Stage ManagerMaria is delighted to join Seattle Shakespeare Company for her first production on the West Coast as she recently moved to Seattle from the Philadelphia region This past summer Maria enjoyed stage managing West Side Story in Connecticut Prior she was head of props on Million Dollar Quartet (2016 National Tour) Memphis (2015 National Tour) and Hair (2014 National Tour) Her favorite recent stage management experiences include The Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical (Montgomery Theater) Master Class (Shakespeare amp Company) The Little Prince (Bristol Riverside Theatre) and Joe Turnerrsquos Come and Gone (Plays amp Players) In addition to stage managing Maria also works as an electrician props mistress and general stagehand Maria has a wonderful husband Nathan

A LITTLE FAMILY HISTORY

Not only a princess Medea was the grand-daughter of the sun god Helios and the niece of the witch Circe

BUT DID SHE REALLY WANT TO

According to the myth it was the goddesses Hera and Aphrodite that conspired to help Jason get that fleece They convinced Eros to shoot Medea with a love arrow so that she had no choice but to fall in love with Jason

The Chorus in Greek drama was physically separated from the main events but always within hearing distance of the central characters They commented on and interpreted the actions but didnrsquot intervene or interact

HE WAS A BIT OF A LONER

Euripides is said to have written his plays in a ten-chambered cave now known as the Cave of Euripides

THE BIG GREEK TRIO

One of the three major Greek tragedians that included Sophocles and Aeschylus Euripides was known for creating fully developed female characters and for plays that centered on internal psychological conflict rather than on destiny-driven dramas

Jasonrsquos life began on the run Just before he was born his power-hungry uncle Pelias stole the throne from his father King Aeson and condemned all of Aesonrsquos children to death Thinking quickly Jasonrsquos mother enlisted her midwives to pretend that the infant had been stillborn and had him spirited away to be raised in safety

As a young man Jason returned to demand the throne from his usurper uncle Pelias promised to give up the throne if Jason could bring him the Golden Fleece from Colchis a magical kingdom to the east (modern day Georgia)

Jason began by assembling a band of heroes including the Boreads the sons of the north wind who could fly and the famed hero Hercules They name themselves the Argonauts after their ship the Argo which would carry them nearly 3000 miles

On their journey the Argonauts had typical dude adventures like stumbling across an island inhabited solely by women and sowing a few seeds before getting back to the quest They fought six-armed giants lost a teammate to lusty nymphs and saved a cursed king from harpies that kept stealing his food

When Jason and the Argonauts arrived in Colchis the king promised the Golden Fleece to Jason on the condition that he complete three nearly impossible feats Fortunately the goddess Hera had pulled some strings in the pantheon causing the princess Medea to fall in love with Jason The two worked together and depending heavily on Medearsquos knowledge and potion-craft Jason was able to win the fleece When Medearsquos father attempted to stop her running away with Jason she murdered her brother and scattered his body parts to halt her fatherrsquos pursuit

Their journey back to Greece was fraught with divine curses and divine aid deadly siren songs and a giant bronze android really

Back in Jasonrsquos home kingdom of Iolcus Pelias went back on his promise to relinquish the throne to Jason Medea tricked Peliasrsquo own daughters into killing him but failed to secure the crown and the couple was on the run again Together they settled in Corinth where they would live happily for ten years before the events of this play begin

ON THE RUN


The play takes place in Corinth some years after Jasonrsquos quest for the Golden Fleece Medea the princess of Colchis was instrumental in Jasonrsquos success mdash betraying her father and even killing her brother in order to escape with Jason After a failed attempt to claim Jasonrsquos throne from his usurper uncle the couple fled to Corinth and both now living in exile started a family together in a period of relative peace

When the story begins Medea has learned that Jason intends to leave her for Glauce the Corinthian princess Glaucersquos father King Kreon has anticipated Medearsquos anger and plans to exile her from Corinth Medea pleads with Kreon to delay banishment by one day and he eventually concedes

When Jason and Medea meet he defends his decision reasoning that he couldnrsquot pass up a marriage that would establish him as heir to the Corinthian throne As Medea is considered a barbarian among the Greeks Jason argues that his marriage to Glauce is a better fit and suggests their relationship and family can remain intact with Medea as his mistress Not believing this plan Medea reminds him of her role in his success that none of his achievements could have happened without her Jason promises to support her but she rejects him warning that he will live to regret his choice

Medea then seeks Aigeus the king of Athens She learns that Aigeus is struggling with impotence and currently without an heir Explaining her situation Medea offers to give him medicine to restore his fertility in exchange for sanctuary in Athens Aigeus agrees unaware that Medea is plotting vengeance

Medea plans to poison robes and a crown which she will arrange to have presented to Glauce as a gift She also plans to kill her children both to hurt Jason even more and to spare them from Kreonrsquos wrath after Glaucersquos death She meets with Jason again saying that she had overreacted Pleading forgiveness she asks that their children be sent with offers of robes and a crown to Glauce in the hopes she will convince Kreon to change his mind about the exile order Jason agrees to her request

Everything goes better than Medea had planned As relayed by messengers Glauce puts on the poisoned robes and dies As he tries to save his daughter Kreon touches the robes and is likewise poisoned

Faced with the task of killing her own children Medea struggles with her resolve but ultimately carries out the murders Jason enters to confront her about the deaths of Glauce and Kreon and is faced with the sight of their dead children

THE MYTHOLOGY OF MEDEAMuch like todayrsquos popular hero franchises (think DC Comics or Star Trek) major characters in classic mythology had their stories retold and reimagined mdash but over centuries instead of decades Details changed between versions and new adventures were contributed to collective narratives

The earliest Medea stories predate theater itself and were sung for audiences by a single performer This form of musical storytelling permeated the ancient world and extends back to oral traditions established before the advent of writing The written lyrics for these performed narratives are today commonly referred to as ldquopoemsrdquo

By the time Euripides penned his take on Medea in 431 BCE versions of the story had already been circulating for at least 300 years

In several versions Medearsquos children are executed by the Corinthians for aiding their motherrsquos revenge In another she kills her own children by accident Euripidesrsquo version is considered the first in which Medea purposefully kills her children a reimagining of events that influenced later versions of the story

And while Medearsquos mythology begins within the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece it does not end with the events of this play On the run again Medearsquos adventures take her first to Thebes then Athens There she marries King Aegeus and starts a new family but her tragic impulse to resolve conflict with murder mdash a trait common for male heroes in Greek myth mdash displaces her again

Finally in one version of the story she returns to the kingdom of her birth killing her usurper uncle and restoring the father she once betrayed to his rightful throne

Bring Down the House an adaptation of Shakespearersquos epic Henry VI trilogy of plays is a project that Seattle Shakespeare Company has been involved in helping to create for over a year As a company committed to classical theatre we rarely get to participate in the development of new work Early workshops and readings solidified our enthusiasm as did the unique opportunity to showcase some of our arearsquos finest actresses

Director Rosa Joshi who along with actress Kate Wisnewski created the ambitious Bring Down the House shared some of her early thoughts about the project What follows is a condensed and edited version of that conversation

Power and Politics

As a director who loves classical plays Irsquom always thinking about what is relevant about these plays for use today Yes theyrsquore universal theyrsquore classics but I really believe that you have to not be topical but relevant At the center of [these plays] is a massive civil war thatrsquos fought for personal political gain Thatrsquos fought for people grasping for power and also political personalities

When I think about how to tell this story for a modern American audience mdash this is not our history So it doesnrsquot play the way it does in England or even in Europe where therersquos a history of monarchy But it does play for us in a Game of ThronesHouse of Cards way Itrsquos the political machinations itrsquos the back room dealings Itrsquos the way these people maneuver in a political sphere I think that really resonates for a contemporary American audience

Then someone told me about the War of the Roses and Game of Thrones I did learn from watching Game of Thrones which is the thing that I took back into the adaptation is that this is about family The plays are about brothers and sisters and fathers and mothers and what they will do for power What they will do to each other and what they will do to the common people for power

The political maneuverings the family politics and dynamics and the human story mdash I love in this play that the most despicable of characters have moments of real empathy They have moments when theyrsquore genuinely human Thatrsquos the challenge for us mdash to not just say ldquothere are evil people in the worldrdquo but realize that we are all capable of really terrible things That it lies within us all and therefore how we conduct ourselves is really important Wersquore not off the hook as individuals or as a society

Why All Female

There are very few female roles in the canon period mdash but the history plays especially are usually a showcase for a ton of men I really enjoy the subversiveness of a ton of women taking on these macho plays When you look at power in the political arena and you think about gender and you think about ways in which masculinity in that world affects relationships and affects what happens I think itrsquos really provocative to turn it on its head and have a bunch of women play those roles

This now being my third production when people ask ldquoWhy all womenrdquo Irsquom pretty political about it Here are all these incredible women in this town who have real chops Theyrsquore really good because they have to compete for the few opportunities available They have to be really good to even get seen mdash never mind called back Thatrsquos an imparity To me it is about a balancing of the scales It is about creating opportunities for an underserved population of artists I am more clear about that as a political stance than when I first started doing the work

Working on King John way back I remember Sarah Harlett standing onstage in one of those big group scenes that you have in Shakespeare She was looking around and said to me ldquoIrsquom onstage with her and her and her and herrdquo That never happens Not even in contemporary plays and especially never in Shakespeare One of the things that has come up again and again [with upstart crow] is that fact that these women get to work with each other instead of competing with each other for these roles


Director Kelly Kitchens and composer Shenandoah Davis met less than a year ago to begin collaborating on Medea The chorus in the play comprised of the women of Corinth presented a unique challenge While Kitchens has a wealth of experience both onstage and off this was Davisrsquos first time creating music for a play let alone a play with thousands of years of history to it Dramaturg Sara Keats spoke with both Kitchens and Davis to get their views on approaching Medea The interview has been condensed and edited for clarity

Kelly Kitchens This play has always held a fascination for me and when it circled back into my orbit about two years ago I knew it was a story I had to tell Irsquom thrilled to be directing it this dark disturbing playmdashitrsquos a story for the brokenhearted for the marginalized for the betrayedmdashand for me ultimately a love story that goes terribly terribly wrong

Euripidesrsquo use of the chorus in this piece is particularly fascinating It is so different from his other choruses or those of his contemporaries Aeschylus and Sophocles In Medea the chorus is not merely an innocent bystander or moderator They are not solely the voice of reason nor a counter to the turmoil Not exclusively devoted followers rather they become at times all of these things and eventually they become accomplices to murder

We all bring our individual histories to the theatre where we share a communal experiencemdashso too our chorus often has a variety of points of view on the unfolding events They donrsquot stop her

They comment debate and even protest but they donrsquot stop her This is an unusual Euripidean chorus who could no oaths were sworn Their will is free

Shenandoah Davis Irsquove never composed for a play before but the music I write on my own tends to be very narrative and story-based so the transition was fairly straightforward for me I treated the music as adornments for Euripidesrsquo words

Kelly first approached me in late January It was perfect because I remembered reading Medea in high school drama classes and feeling really drawn to her story in particular I began writing music based on the play sat in on auditions for the chorus and began composing the lsquomusical momentsrsquo after I knew exactly who the fierce women of Corinth were going to be and what they sounded like

Kitchens Shenandoah is a marvelous recording artist composer and collaborator Her works beautifully weave together strains of classical ragtime and klezmer piano Therersquos an otherworldly quality about her music that suits perfectly the ldquoothernessrdquo that is at the heart of the play

Medea like other titular Greek female characters dominates the stage challenges the order and ideas of society and is fantastically adopting what would traditionally have been seen as the male heroic Therersquos that Terry Collits essay we read [Intimations of Feminism in Ancient Athens Euripidesrsquo Medea] where she talks about the epistemic crisis going on in Athens when this play was first

performed that therersquos all this great humanist discourse going on but women continue to be denied the most basic reward of [a humanist] line of thinking That crisis feels incredibly present to me in our world even though the play is from 431 BCE The modernity of it is shocking

Davis Given whatrsquos happening politically right now wersquore in danger of moving very quickly back to a state of complete disenfranchisement for women people of color members of the LGBTQI community Irsquom so grateful for all of the progress that has been made in the last few years in protecting minority rights but we are still so far away from equality

Kitchens We see a whole world of characters that are oppressed or disenfranchised Itrsquos a play about vows promises that are broken The broken promise of a marriage of this partnership is at the center of it but there are plenty of other characters who suffer the failure of what this world has promised them

Davis I love that Medea is so much stronger than the typical lsquowoman scornedrsquo and that she acts based on conscious decisions rather than hysterics

Kitchens Therersquos common reads of this play that shersquos mad but shersquos notmdashshersquos under extreme conditions When she decides to do the unthinkable the undoable then actually does itmdashthatrsquos not madness but meditated action And the play this production is making the case for understanding the path to that decision It will beg conversation and I think that conversation is timeless and absolutely necessary

There are Hobbits gathering A dragon is in the wings Children are on stage eager to speak their lines in English and Spanish and Vietnamese Seattle Public Theater is putting on a multi-lingual The Hobbit as part of their youth programming Another time in a production of Shakespearersquos King Lear a teenage girl was playing the title role Still another time there was a co-production of The Mikado with the Seattle Opera and the production became part of a national conversation about race and representation

Why is theater important to kids ldquoWhy is life important to kidsrdquo asks Shana Bestock who is the founder of the youth program at Seattle Public Theater that began in 2001 and who is the currently the theaterrsquos artistic and education director ldquoTheater is a language a discipline a group activity an art form a recreation an entertainment

opportunities for students to learn lighting stage fighting directing all the skills needed to create a play Thatrsquos just what the kids do once theyrsquore enrolled create

In 2007 for his final senior production Irving had learned a lot by then not only about theater but about himself ldquoLoyalty creativity teamworkrdquo he listed ldquoIngenuityrdquo During summer stints from college Seattle Public Theaterrsquos stage still pulled at him The Bathhouse Ensemble was soon formed a way for graduates of the SPT youth program to still perform and participate in theater ldquoIt wasnrsquot about teaching theaterrdquo Irving said ldquoIt was about making theater and making it for ourselvesrdquo

Irving is now SPTrsquos education coordinator ldquoItrsquos amazing that I get to work here with Shana She was the director of one of my proudest moments on stage when I was a kidrdquo The show was a one-man monologue of Edgar Allan Poersquos The Tell-Tale Heart As the education coordinator he manages all of SPTrsquos youth programs executing it at ground level ldquoThey have the same experience with a production as a professional actorrdquo Irving says ldquoNow I see myself mirrored in every success with every successive generationrdquo

Bestock wrote out her vision of the program for those future generations when she was all of 17 A vision inspired by her mentors like Seattle Childrenrsquos Theatrersquos Linda Hartzell and by theaters she grew up with as a kid herself ndash ACT Theatre Empty Space Theatre and others ldquoI wanted to create a space for young people that could be a home a doorway a place for adventures and for self-discoveryrdquo She is amazed at how far itrsquos come and how far itrsquos taken her ldquoItrsquos a safe place an authentic place where young people have autonomy and ownership and agencyrdquo

Irving agrees with his boss and his former director ldquoItrsquos a third place between home and school where children can feel saferdquo Even if those children are Hobbits with a dragon lurking nearby lt

an escape and a social connector all rolled into one glorious packagerdquo She continues ldquoTheater is vital for kids because they need structures in which they can try on different hats take on different personalities be inside foreign stories wear funny clothes and put on makeup and give voice to emotionrdquo The things learned in in a childrsquos life in theater ndash empathy human connection imagination ndash are applied to their life outside the theater

It gave voice to Simon Irving for one As an 8th grader he had fun playing a pompous man of the manor in a production of The Passion of Dracula A great experience for him he got the theater bug fast and was in the Seattle Public Youth Program for the next five years Serving approximately 500 students a year the organization donrsquot offer classes per se they simply immerse children like Irving was at the time in a show And not just acting They offer
