MedCruise president Carla Salvadóparticipated in the openingceremony making a keynote speech

where she applauded the Mediterranean forbeing ready to host vessels all months of theyear, thanks to a concerted effort ofinfrastructure development and expansiondespite political and economic issues.Antonio Sevilla, president, Port Authority ofCartagena welcomed participants toCartagena and the Murcia region.

Opening the Forum, Giora Israel, svpglobal ports & destination development,Carnival Corp. & plc and chairman of CruiseLines International Association’s GlobalPorts Committee said the barriers to year-round cruising in the Mediterranean arefalling, just as the pressure to increase callsoutside of peak season is rising.

‘Experienced cruisers are demanding newitineraries, congestion is a problem in keyports in peak periods, vacation habits arechanging in Europe and airlift is becomingmore affordable,’ Israel told delegates.

‘All of these factors support the growth ofyear-round cruising,’ he said.

Statistics prove year-round cruising isalready established in the region. The 4.16mpassenger movements and 2,246 calls atMedCruise ports from November 2012 toMarch 2013 represented 15.7% of the totalpassenger movements and 15.8% of total callsin the 12 months from November 2012,Thanos Pallis, secretary general of

MedCruise, told delegates. In the three months from December 2012

to February 2013, just 829 or 5.8% of the year’scruise calls were made, with 6.1% ofpassenger movements.

Despite the low numbers, the wintermonths were showing increased numbers ofcalls and passengers year on year, Pallissaid.

Kerry Anastassiadis, ceo Louis Cruises,

said the cruise industry needs to change itsown perception and stop referring to ‘wintercruising.’

Anastassiadis believes that blamingseasonality strictly on the weather isdeceiving. Employing MedCruise statisticsAnastassiadis noted Piraeus had 159,000passengers in the winter season, fewer than

Hamburg. ‘If you compare theweather of Piraeus and Hamburg, where would you rather be?Piraeus. So something is nothappening,’ he remarked.

‘We sell the majority ofcruises on warmth and weather,’Anastassiadis argued, ‘so Medequals summer. So people do notthink of it in the winter. It is asummer destination.’

On the final day MedCruisemembers Port of Cartagena,Costa Brava Ports, Tenerife, andBalearics participated in theworkshop sessions with one-to-one meetings with cruise lineexecutives.
