Dear Applicant: MEChA de UCLA would like to thank you for your interest in the Xinachtli Director position this upcoming 2012-2013 school year. As we approach a new school year we are faced with the disappointing reality that the number of Chicana/o and Latina/o students at UCLA is not reflective of the greater Los Angeles community. In order to ensure that our representation and presence here at UCLA continues, we must extend our hands out to our younger brothers and sisters in the high schools and community centers so that they too can join us in the universities. Thus, we must commit ourselves to go back into the community and assist youth in entering institutions of higher education. Xinachtli was created in 1998 in response to the effects of proposition 209, which decreased the number of entering Raza students at UCLA by 50%. Xinachtli currently serves four sites: Civitas High, Santa Monica High, West Adams Preparatory High and the Pico Youth and Family Center. Through peer advising, tutoring, cultural and community workshops, and other forms of alternative education, Xinachtli seeks to address the specific needs that Raza students encounter in the high schools with a philosophy of holistic development. This philosophy aspires to develop a greater sense of self-reliance, self-awareness and self-determination in students so that they become critical agents of change and build leadership within their respective communities. The personal statement section of the application gives you an opportunity to give the hiring committee more insight about who you are, what your experiences have been, and where you are headed. The degree progress report is also an important part of the evaluation process. The hiring committee will use your degree progress report in order to get a glimpse of your academic history. It is important to note that the hiring committee does not have any GPA requirements for employment to our project. The committee does however; look at your academic progress if you are a recent graduate, and how you have dealt with problems that may have come up in your past. We have found that students with some history of academic difficulty have great insight about University policy, and their experience is valued. The resume is requested for the purpose of evaluating work experience and to see what types of community-related activities you have engaged in. The Project Director Position is a one-year contract that has the potential for renewal. The position officially begins July 1, 2013 and ends June 30, 2014. MEChA’s Xinachtli will only consider Director Applicants that are able to attend the paid SRC/SIAC training, which will accumulate to two weeks in the summer. Exceptions may be made in only very rare circumstances and by consent of MEChA de Xinachtli Application
