Electric Dipole Moments: What is it?EDM: Permanent spatial separation of positive andnegative chargesWater molecule: d = 2 · 10−9e· cm

Water molecule can have large dipole moment becauseground state has two degenerate states of different parityThis is not the case for proton. Here the existence of a permanent EDM requires both Tand P violation, i.e. assuming CPT invariance this impliesCP violation:

That makes it interesting!

Why is it interesting?CP violation of Standard Model predicts Proton EDM< 10−31e·cmThis corresponds to a separation of two u−quarks from ad−quark by ≈ 10−30cm, i.e 10−17 of the proton radius!

Sources of CP violation

CP can have different sourcesWeak Interaction (unobservably small)QCD θ term (limit set by neutron EDM measurement)———– Part of Standard Model ———–sources beyond SM

⇒ It is important to measure neutron and proton anddeuteron and . . . EDMs in order to disentangle various sourcesof CP violation.

How to measure it?General Idea:For all edm experiments (neutron, proton, atom, . . . ):

Interaction of ~d with electric field ~EFor charged particles: apply electric field in a storage ring:

~E~s

φ

Wait for build-up of vertical polarization s⊥ ∝ |d |, thendetermine s⊥ using polarimeter

In general:d~sdt

= ~Ω× ~s13 / 37

d~sdt∝ ~d × ~E

3. Pure Magnetic RingMain advantage:Experiment can be performed at the existing (upgraded) COSY(COoler SYnchrotron) in Jülich on a shorter time scale!

COSY provides (polarized ) protons and deuterons withp = 0.3− 3.7GeV/c ⇒ Ideal starting point

, /1.) pure electric ring no ~B field needed works only for p

(BNL)2.) combined ring works for p,d , 3He, . . . both ~E and ~B

(Jülich) required3.) pure magnetic ring existing (upgraded) COSY lower sensitivity

(Jülich) ring can be used ,shorter time scale

Systematics

One major source:Radial B field mimics an EDM effect:

Difficulty: even small radial magnetic field, Br can mimicEDM effect if :µBr ≈ dEr

Suppose d = 10−29e·cm in a field of E = 10MV/mThis corresponds to a magnetic field:

Br =dEr

µN=

10−22eV3.1 · 10−8eV/T

≈ 3 · 10−17T

Solution: Use two beams running clockwise and counterclockwise, Separation of the two beams is sensitive to Br
