What skills do I have to use?
• Physical measuring
• Length
• Area
• Volume http://2014year9maths.wikispaces.com/Measurement+Project
Get the teacher to check your problem before starting work on solving it.
Where do I get my problem from?
• Make it up, start with something that interests you.
• Find it on the internet.
• ideas on the wiki space. http://2014year9maths.wikispaces.com/Measurement+Project
Get the teacher to check your problem before starting work on solving it.
What do we need to find out before we can answer the question?
Number of pieces of paper on the pallet
• Number of boxes on the pallet
• Number of reams of paper in a box.
• Number of pieces of paper in a ream.
Number of pieces of paper used each day
Measure or find out what you need to know.
• Show your working
• Communicate your thinking.
• Use visual images and words to help you communicate your mathematical thinking.
• Link to the language of mathematics.
• Setting out and clarity are important.
• Reference the mathematics you are using.
Calculation Section
• Pulling together all of the pieces of information to solve the problem.
• For example:
• There are 60 boxes on the pallet.
• Each box has 5 reams.
• Each ream has 500 pieces of paper.
• Number of pieces of paper on the pallet=
• 60*5*500=150,000
Calculation Section
• Number of pieces of A4 used on an average day is estimated to be 4000.
• Number of pieces of paper on the pallet, divided the number used per day=
• 150,000/4000 = 37.5 days.
Conclusion
• Answer your question and evaluate how relevant it is. Make suggestions for future investigations.
• For example: The pallet will last approximately one month. However, it is important to note that there is more photocopying done at exam time and less during holiday time, so the time of year would effect this result.
• There may be a decline in the use of A4 when students start using their devices to view and create information.
NZC Level
• Connect the mathematics you used to solve your problem to the New Zealand Curriculum.
• Use the links provided on the wiki space.
• Add to your project in order to move up a NZC level.
• Start a new project, you can do as many as you like, think of it as a portfolio of evidence.
The exemplar project is at level 3, In order to make it level 4 the surface area and the volume of the pallet would need to be calculated.
Presentation Options.
• Poster
• Powerpoint
• Movie
• Any way you like
Everyone needs to share their learning with their group, and present to the class.
