GENERAL: This Technical Publication covers a measure to prevent a false size detection at the reader assembly. DETAILS: Symptom: Slamming the platen cover or the ADF may cause false original-size detection. For instance, a LTR size original is incorrectly detected as an 11X17 size original.

Cause: When closing the ADF or the platen cover, the open/close detection sensor [1] is turned on and original-size detection starts at a distance [a] from the original size sensor [2] to the ADF (platen cover) [3]. However, if the ADF (platen glass) [3] is slammed shut, the sensor starts to detect the original-size at a smaller distance [b] from the original size sensor [2] to the ADF (platen glass). In this case, the ADF (platen cover) [3] and the original [4] become closer, which causes the sensor to falsely detect the ADF (platen cover) [3] as the original [4] resulting in the above symptom.

    FACTORY MEASURE:

    A) Platen Cover Type for the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C4000 Series and imageRUNNER 3200 Series: The retaining plate [1] attached to the platen cover has been changed from the old type [A] (FC8-6450-000) to a new type[B] (FC8-6450-010) to keep enough distance from the size sensor to the platen cover when the size detection starts.

    B) ADF type (common for all models) The rib of the ADF, indicated in a red box below, has been changed in shape from the old type [A] to a new type [B] to keep enough distance from the size sensor to the ADF when the size detection starts.

SERVICING PROCEDURE: If this symptom should occur, check the operating condition of the main body (platen cover type/ ADF type) then prepare the following parts first and then follow the steps below.

    A) Platen cover type R: Prepare the new retaining plate (FC8-6450-010) for the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C4000 Series and imageRUNNER 3200 Series.

    B) ADF type Prepare the sensor lever sheet B (4Y8-0019-000).

    A) Procedure for the Platen Cover Type R Common for the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C4000 Series and imageRUNNER 3200 Series. 1) Remove the 4 screws [2] of the right and left hinges [1] to detach the hinges and the retaining plates [3].

    2) Replace the old retaining plate [A] with the new type [B]. Attach the part in reverse order of Step 1.

    B) Procedure for ADF type As the disassembling procedure varies depending on models, go through the disassembling procedure for each modelfirst. Next, refer to the common work procedure and then attach the sensor lever sheet B. iR-ADV 4051/4045/4035/4025 Series 1) Disconnect the connector [2] of the ADF [1].

    2) Remove the 4 screws to detach the reader rear cover. Go to Step 1 of the common work procedure.

imageRUNNER 3245/3235/3230/3225 Series 1) Disconnect the ADF connector [1].

    2) Remove 4 screws [2] to remove the reader rear cover [1] and then go to Step1 of the common work procedure.

Common procedure 1) Remove the 2 connectors [1] and the 1 screw [2] to detach the sensor holder [3].

    2) Remove the spring [1] and the open/close sensor arm [2].

    3) Clean the attaching surface with alcohol and attach the sensor lever sheet B (4Y8-0019-000) [2] to the open/close sensor arm [1] with reference to [a][b].

    4) Attach the part in reverse order from Step 2.
