Digital Ice Breaker• Take out a digital device.
Find a file that reflects something about you . It can be anything...an image, video, sound file, message, website, memo, article, etc.
• Turn to a neighbor and take 2 minutes to share your file and why you selected it. Be prepared to share your own and/or your neighbor’s file.

basis of all creativity and

TransferTransfer is the “heavy lifting” teachers and learners do together that creates relevance and meaning. It’s a shared effort.
Transfer answers the question, “How can we use this in our life/work in the near future?”

So You Think You Know About PBL?A Team Challenge
Friday, April 26, 13
True or False?Students “making something”, “doing hands-on learning”, or “planning an activity” are automatically considered to be engaged in PBL.
Friday, April 26, 13
False!PBL students engage in:
intellectually challenging tasks leading up to activitiessolving complex and compelling problems
addressing a relevant driving questionmeeting academic outcomes
Definition: PBL happens when students are actively engaged in solving a complex problem and defend their solution in an
oral presentation or in writing

Activity-Based v. PBL
Friday, April 26, 13
True or FalsePBL and standards based knowledge and skills are not really compatible
Friday, April 26, 13
False!Well designed PBL:
Aligns a driving question, products and tasks with standards
Documents results with formative and summative assessment
Friday, April 26, 13
True or FalsePBL can be of varying lengths and are primarily designed to address key standards in depth rather than a long list of standards.
Friday, April 26, 13
True!Projects can be 1-2 weeks, a month, a semester, or longer.
Start with one or two small projects and build over time.
Collaborate with colleagues, repeat projects year to year.
Friday, April 26, 13
True or FalsePBL works best with older students, and is less effective with english language learners and students with special needs.
Friday, April 26, 13
False!Well designed PBL:
Is being used successfully in grades K-5 to address literacy
ELLs engage in meaningful reading & writing with peer support
Small groups provide opportunities for teachers to differentiate
Friday, April 26, 13
True or FalsePBL can be “messy” and requires that teachers teach, and students learn a new set of skills
Friday, April 26, 13
True!To engage in PBL effectively students need be taught how to:
Work well in teams
Manage time and tasks
Conduct inquiry
Use formative assessment to improve
Friday, April 26, 13
True or FalsePBL requires teachers to give up traditional methods
Friday, April 26, 13
False!Teachers using PBL can still use:
Teacher directed lessons
Mini Lectures
Textbooks
Worksheets
