Message from the President & CEO Message from the Board Chair

Dear friends,

The past two years have been difficult for all not-for-profits in our community. In spite of the challenges we face however, I remain heartened by the dedication of our supporters. Their commitment – your commitment – to our mission means we can continue to provide a range of services to homebound elderly and disabled folks who need our help... something

we could not otherwise do. In the past year, we have provided more than a million meals, made other services available that help our clients stay in their homes, and began two new programs that are seen as models for the community: Mike’s Place, the only Alzheimer’s respite program in East Austin, and a professional home renewal and architectural barrier removal program.

Three years ago, we began a full case-management program with our trained professional licensed social workers. It is now a hallmark of what we do and one of the reasons that Meals on Wheels and More is the premier meals on wheels agency in Texas and beyond.

We develop the kinds of programs our clients need… programs that help them stay out of nursing homes… from nutritious home deliv-ered meals to transportation to medical appointments to grocery shopping assistance to minor safety related home repairs to caring friendly phone calls to abate the sense of isolation they often experi-ence.

According to a study published by the University of Kentucky, Texas has the fourth highest rate of senior hunger in the United States. There are so many older adults in our area living, as Thoreau might have put it, “lives of quiet desperation.” They depend on us– and our volunteers – to get hot nutritious meals to them and provide the other help they need.

We recently received a letter from a woman named Kathy. She wrote to thank us for delivering meals to her mother because she had been struggling to care for her mother, be a new mom, and work full time. Although it would have created new financial burdens, she even considered giving up her job to make sure her mother got a decent lunch and was reminded to take her medications.

Now, however, Kathy reports that the nutritional benefits of our meals and the boost to her spirits that her mother gets from the volunteers who deliver them has made a huge difference in her mom and she can now go to work without the nagging worry that had plagued her before.

That’s just one of many stories. The programs of Meals on Wheels and More are life-changing for the people we serve and their families so, on behalf of all our frail homebound clients, I thank you for stand-ing with us... for helping us make their lives less desperate, less lonely, less hungry... and more hopeful.

Sincerely,

Dear friends,

In the nine years that I’ve served on the Board of Meals on Wheels and More, I have learned that constant progress is an obligated expectation as much as an aspirational objective. This year has proven no different, and we are charging ahead in the face of uncertain challenges and opportu-nities to excel in what we do best.

Individuals aged 65 and older comprise the fastest-growing segment of our population, and Meals on Wheels and More is on the front lines of witnessing the growing needs that accompany this population shift. Texas continues to have one of the highest rates of senior hunger, and we see many Austin seniors who find themselves in situations they never thought possible – unable to access food or other basic and criti-cal services.

In 2010, we served more than 1 million meals to more than 3,200 men, women and children. However, we also continue to look beyond the meal to meet the many additional growing needs of our community.

Ensuring that our clients can remain in a familiar environment with personal security and comfort has proven to be effective in preserv-ing family connections, reducing rates of depression and preventing undue burdens on our clients and the healthcare system.

We are committed to a holistic and expansive service model. For example:

-formed necessary repairs and updates on more than 45 troubled or di-lapidated client homes across Austin, with 50 more slated for this year;

12 senior centers in the greater Austin area;

which also provides respite care for their caregivers, now hosts 15 neighbors each week.

I especially appreciate the compassion of our volunteer network. Giv-ing of their time and willingly driving their own vehicles as gas prices hover near $4 per gallon, I truly believe that these 6,000-plus generous souls are the highest quality volunteers in our community. At the same time, I’m often met with stories of joy that our volunteers experience while delivering meals and other services, with many stating that they feel they get more than they give.

-bound and elderly population continues to set the standard for similar programs around Texas and beyond. I firmly believe that we are poised to do even greater work to help those in need in Central Texas, and on behalf of the people we serve, I thank you. Meals on Wheels and More succeeds at improving lives because of your continued support.

Sincerely,
