WOMEN’S GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT LOCAL CHARITIY

Twin Creeks Country Club is proud to announce its 6th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament. Scheduled for Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10, festivities will include a ladies only golf tournament, helicopter ball drop, gift basket raffle, silent auction, keynote speaker, lunch, and awards dinner. All proceeds will benefit Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas. Texas Oncology is the event’s Signature Sponsor and a long-time supporter of it.

“Each year the ladies of Twin Creeks are excited and proud to host our annual charity event and this year is no different,” says Event Coordinator Karen Clary. “In past years we have donated thousands of dollars, with much of them staying right here in Austin. We are so grateful for Texas Oncology’s continued support and the support from all our sponsors and golfers,” she adds.

This year’s event will take on a Mother’s Day twist and will kick-off with a special “Music on the Lawn” free concert on Friday, May 9 beginning at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by Jimi Lee and family activities, face painting, food and drinks, and various vendors will be available and in attendance.

The tournament will consist of an 18-hole, four-lady scramble and the $115 entry fee includes greens and cart fees, lunch, dinner, raffle tickets, and tee gifts. For an additional $60, players are encouraged to employ an honorary “team caddie.” A “dinner only” option is also offered for $40.

Last year’s helicopter ball drop was a huge success and will be repeated this year beginning at noon on Saturday, May 10 on Hole #10, after which one lucky winner will win $1,000 based on where individually purchased balls land.

It’s spring in central Texas and you have just spotted a fawn! He is so tiny and defenseless, and he seems so alone. You wonder if he might be an orphan – like Bambi. You want to pick him up and take care of him – or at least get a closer look . . .

But the fawn is not alone. Bambi’s mother is not far away, and a deer that would otherwise run from a human or a dog will defend her baby if she senses danger. Now is the season for deer to give birth to their young, and the time to remind your children and neighbors to be deer-smart for the deer’s safety and your own.

If you find a fawn, leave it alone. Most white-tail deer fawns are born in May and June in central Texas, but they start to appear as soon as late April. For the first three to four weeks of their lives, the fawns are too small to follow their mothers, and it is normal for a doe to leave a fawn alone for several hours at a time. If you find a fawn, do move it or try to rescue it. Most fawns are not orphaned or abandoned. Unless the fawn is obviously sick or in an unsafe area, it should be left alone. If you think the fawn is in danger, call the Austin Wildlife Rescue hotline at 512-472-9453 (512-472-WILD).

Remind your children to stay away from the deer. Baby animals naturally draw the attention of curious children. Fawning season in central Texas provides a unique opportunity to teach your children about cycles of life and kindness to animals. Educate your children about the fawning season. Explain to them that the fawns are not abandoned. Teach them that they should stay away from the fawns because the mother is nearby and she will return to take care of the baby.

Steer clear of the does. The does are on high alert this time of year. If you see a doe while you are outside it is best to give her

space, especially if you feel that she is watching or following you. A doe will defend its territory if a fawn is near.

Restrain your dogs. Fawns also draw the attention of curious dogs. Walk your dogs on leash do not let them run free outside of fenced areas. Standard (not retractable) leashes are safest this time of year. Off-leash and unrestrained dogs may be seen as a threat by a doe and are a primary cause of conflicts with deer.

Use your deer deterrents. If you do not want fawns around your property, now is the time to refresh or activate your deer repellents and mend your fences. Does will not leave fawns in an obviously hostile environment.

The fawning season provides an opportunity to experience and appreciate the wildlife that live among us. The opportunity to interact with deer is a part of what makes Austin a special place to live. Ayusa, a non-profit organization that promotes global learning and leadership through cultural exchange and leadership programs for high school students from around the world, is looking for American families in the Austin area interested in sharing their America with international high school students for the 2014-2015 school year. Applications for interested Austin area host families are currently being accepted.“Sharing the American experience with an international student is a unique

opportunity for the average American to profoundly impact the life of a teenager, and provide them with a positive, transformational experience that they will remember

for the rest of their lives,” said Sherry Carpenter, executive director of Ayusa. “Austin host families are in a great position to show international exchange students an especially

authentic slice of American life, which is one reason we are actively looking for Austin area host families.”

Ayusa foreign exchange students come from more than 60 countries, are fully insured, bring their own spending money, and are proficient in English. Whether from Japan or Brazil, India or Sweden, Ukraine or Mexico, France or Lebanon, foreign exchange students are a window into another culture and a great way to travel the world without leaving your home.

“Austin host families are the heart and soul of Ayusa’s foreign exchange program,” said Vicki Odom, Community Representative for Ayusa, and the local contact for Austin and the surrounding towns. “Local families have been hosting Ayusa exchange students for the last six years, and the experience has been transformative for the students, who blossom in the local community through support from the families and schools.”

There is no “typical” American host family and Ayusa welcomes all interested families, with or without children, from both urban and rural communities. Host

families provide three meals a day and a bedroom (either private or shared). Each student is supported by a professionally trained community representative from

Ayusa who works with the family and student for the entire program. All host families must pass a criminal background check and a home visit by an Ayusa representative.

Ayusa has been a member of the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET) for more than 25 years – since its foundation. CSIET

evaluates U.S.-based youth exchange programs so that students, families and schools can identify inbound and outbound reputable exchange organizations.

Being physically active is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain or improve your health. When combined with eating a healthy diet, regular exercise can substantially reduce your risk of chronic disease, prevent weight gain, and improve your overall level of physical and emotional fitness.

HOW MUCH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DO I NEED?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) has recently published several recommendations related to exercise:

1. Any physical activity is better than no physical activity• Includes people with disabilities• Far outweighs the possibility of risk of injury or illness

2. Most health benefits occur with at least 150 minutes a week• Both aerobic and muscle-strengthening are beneficial

3. For most people, additional benefits occur when• You increase the intensity of your physical activity• You increase the frequency of your physical activity• You increase the duration of your physical activity

SHOULD OLDER ADULTS EXERCISE, TOO?

The same HHS guidelines apply, but older adults need to make sure that their fitness level and any chronic conditions allow them to safely perform physical activity. For example, if an older adult is at risk of falling, he should do exercises that maintain or improve his balance.

WHAT IF I HAVE A CHRONICMEDICAL CONDITION?

If you have a chronic medical condition, you should be under the care of a health care provider. It is important to consult your physician about the type and amount of physical activity appropriate for you.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

The health benefits of physical activity far outweigh the risks and some activity is better than none. Persons who have not been diagnosed with a chronic condition (such as diabetes, heart disease, or osteoarthritis) and do not have symptoms (e.g., chest pain or pressure, dizziness, or joint pain) do not need to consult with a health care provider prior to starting an exercise program.

With the goal to collect diapers, baby clothes and micro donations, Austin’s Largest Baby Shower is an eleven day city wide event benefiting three outstanding community organizations: Austin LifeCare Center, Any Baby Can and St. David’s Neonatal ICU. All three provide diapers and supplies to families in need

WHY A BABY SHOWER?

Although Austin landed on Forbes’ 20 fastest growing cities and is a great place to live, Austin also ranked #2 in the US with the highest rate of growing poverty in the suburbs. With the rising demand from middle class working families needing assistance, community organizations such as Any Baby Can, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children and strengthening families, combat the impact of Austin’s rising cost of living. Many of these working class families are finding providing for their family or getting ready for baby is much more expensive than they first planned. As a result community groups offering emergency assistance for daily essentials are over taxed and limiting their programs.

“No one group can meet the demand on their own. Austin’s Largest Baby Shower provides community organizations aid to continue with their much needed programs,” said Doreen Sims, founder of Austin’s Largest Baby Shower. “It is heart breaking when I hear that the rising demographic of Austin’s homeless are women and children. At no fault of their own, they are finding themselves priced out of a housing market due to divorce, loss of income or unexpected medical expenses.”

Awarding Austin’s Top Communities OrganizationsThis eleven day fundraiser starts with a great kickoff event.

On May 7th at the Balcones Country Club the LifeLine Awards Luncheon and Fundraiser will honor Austin LifeCare Center, Any Baby Can and St. David’s Neonatal ICU.

They provide free parenting classes, clothing, baby supplies and emergency assistance to those in need.” Sims stated. “Because of their dedication and commitment to be a lifeline to families in need, Texas State Rep Dawnna Dukes and former Anchor of KEYE, Ron Oliveira agreed to lend their voices to address this issue at the award luncheon.”
