Course Talk
Presentation by Dr. Tom Curran
Biosystems and Food Engineering
Finding Solutions for
Life on a Small Planet
• World population in 2050 will be 9.6 billion people
• Growing world population requires more food, water, energy, goods
• Limited resources demand we do more with less, without degrading our natural environment
• Climate change
Biosystems and Food Engineering
Why are Engineers needed? • Need for engineers driven by market demand,
policy and legislation
• EU Knowledge Based Bio-Economy (KBBE)
• Circular Economy
• Food Wise 2025
• Home grown companies
• Food
• Environment & Energy

Jack Browne TABE.NET Trans-Atlantic Biosystems Engineering Curriculum and Mobility
• UCD have links with Virginia Tech (US), University of Illinois (US), Agricultural University of
Athens (Greece), Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Spain) and University of Bari (Italy).
• Knowledge transfer and student exchange programs.
• I spent 1 academic year in Virginia Tech where I was able to sit classes like: Hydrology, Biodeterioration of lignocellulosic materials, Biomaterials and Sustainability.
• I was also able to experience college life in America. College football, Hiking in the
Appalachian mountains, kayaking white water rafting, travelling.
Internship
• Worked as part of the packaging innovation and renovation team. Working on new to world launches and changes to pack formats for beer globally and spirits in Africa.
• Worked on commercialisation projects such as Guinness Golden Ale. Managing the ordering
of parts for and components for the packaging sites • Worked on science and technology projects making prototypes of
pack formats on the 3D printer and testing new and innovative dispense systems.
Packaging Facilities
• While I was working with Diageo I was lucky enough to see both of the beer packaging sites in Belfast and Runcorn near Manchester.
• These bottling and canning lines were very impressive. A new filler in Runcorn meant they could fill up to 72,000 bottles per hour.
