MDHSA Business Meeting Minutes - March 30, 2015

The meeting was called to order at Chambersburg Mennonite Church at 7:03pm. There were

about 20 members in attendance. Chairman Joe Hege opened the meeting with prayer. The minutes

from the October 20, 2014 Business Meeting were read by Secretary Patti Eby. A motion to accept

the minutes as read was made, seconded, and passed.

Reports

Co-op South – Kim Travis reported that they had 45 families. The have elementary classes and high

school credited classes. They have two 15-week semesters each school year.

Co-Op West – No one was present to report.

Co-Op North – Tanya English reported that they have 32 families. They have 21 classes plus nursery.

They have had some scheduled visitors days that were very well attended.

Diploma Program – Barb Snider reported that there were 217 graduates in 2014. They updated the

diploma by changing ACT 169-1988 to ACT 196-2014.

MDHSA Admin – Barb reported that there are about 150 members this year. The new homeschool

bill is on the website. Membership for the new year starts April 1st. The home page has been fixed up

with some photos. If you have photos of your kids to be added, e-mail them to Barb. You must also

include a note and signature giving her permission to post the pictures on the website. Barb would

like to see more members organizing field trips or activities. A small number of clubs have met at the

Chambersburg BIC church. She mentioned that Rebecca Henry has organized a “Tournament of

Science” presentation and is inviting non-MDHSA members. Before the presentation there will be

some information shared about MDHSA.

Old Business

Box Tops – Valerie Eby reported that she was planning a March skating party but had to cancel it

due to funds not being in the account. A check had not been deposited. She will be making another

submission in June. And there should be sufficient funds to have a swim party in August and a skate

party in the fall. She wanted to remind people that in order to attend the swim party in August their

membership must be renewed before the party.

Facebook page – Angel Snowberger reported on the FB page. Currently there are 100 members. On

it people have been asking questions, announcing field trips, and sharing community events. Please

post co-op only info on the co-op pages and any info relevant to the whole group on the MDHSA

Members page.

Child Abuse Information – Mary Hudzinski shared that they received an email from the PDE home

education coordinator who said they are trying to exempt homeschool co-ops from the clearances.

However, the Dept of Human Services has not signed off on it yet. So Mary suggests you do your

clearances if you are able. If you have lived in PA 10+ years, two clearances are required. If you’ve

lived in PA less than 10 years, an FBI clearance is also required. These clearances are good for 3

MDHSA NEWS

MDHSA Business Meeting Minutes - March 30, 2015 (continued)

years. A form with information on how to do the clearances will soon be available. Those who need

clearances for MDHSA are those in co-op, those leading a club, or those leading a group activity

where parents may not necessarily be present. Mary also wanted to say that as a mandatory reporter

one is required to report abuse seen any place, not just in the group or organization where you

volunteer or work.

Law Book – Mary is updating the law book. If you have websites where you order achievement tests

from or take achievement tests on, please e-mail or private message them to her.

Newsletter – Kim Sheffler reported that she is thoroughly enjoying doing the newsletter. She said

some of the teens are doing a newsletter club and have been contributing to a large portion of the

newsletter. She said the club would like to encourage the MDHSA teens to read their portion of the

newsletter and submit items as well. She asks that the parents forward the newsletter onto their

teens or print it off for them to read it. Kim would like to encourage members to submit articles and

she would love to have some things from the co-ops. The newsletter’s name was changed to

“Homeschool Connections”. If you have any photos of activities for the newsletter, parent’s approval

signatures have to be included for each child in the photo.

There was some discussion on ways to have parents give permission for children’s photos to be used

in the newsletter or on the website. At present the best way is to send an e-mail with your signature

or a hand written note with your signature.

New Business

A. Election of officers

A slate of new officers was presented:

Chairman – Michael Henry

Secretary – Lydia Peckman

Development Chair – Jana Hege

It was asked if there were any additional nominations from the floor. There were none. So a vote

was taken on this slate. All positions were unanimously approved.

B. Any topics from the floor – No topics were presented from the floor.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made. The motion was seconded and passed. Joe Hege,

Chairman, closed the meeting in prayer at 7:58 pm.

In requesting music pieces, I will adhere to the MDHSA music policy which states in part: “…the Executive Committee is

proposing that certain music not be played at formals in the future, which includes music requested by students at the formal.

Music that should not be played includes that which mentions drugs, alcohol, sex, violence and unacceptable language. With

this, it should be understood that certain discretion should be used by chaperones in enforcing this policy. By this we mean

that there may be certain appropriate exceptions to this policy. For example, a song that speaks of someone who, through

redemption, no longer is doing drugs or alcohol and has chosen a new path may be acceptable. This policy permits secular

music as well as Christian music as long as it fits the above criteria.” By signing below, I understand these rules and the

Raising Rabbits

By Danielle Sheffler

This week I asked 17 year old, Jackie

Swope, about her rabbits and got a bit of great

information that I thought I would share with you!

Jackie and her brother, Kyle, got their first

rabbits nine years ago for Easter, as a present.

They thought they were both girls but soon found

out one was a boy when the other got pregnant

and had babies.

Jackie said that the rabbits do make great

pets and are not hard to take care of. She said that

all you need to do to take care of them is, feed

them every other day and give them water. She

also said that you only have to clean the cage once

a year. I asked which she preferred, the female or

male rabbits as pets. She said, “I really prefer the

females because the males tend to spray you on

occasion and fight with one another.” Jackie also

said that she really likes to play with the

babies because they are “so cute!”

Jackie breeds the rabbits and sells the bunnies in

order to make money to help feed the rabbits they

have. They can be kept, as pets, for 5-6 years.

I enjoyed talking to Jackie, even though it was

only over the phone, and learning more about the

cute, fluffy animals some people keep as pets!

Newsletter Club

Interested in being part of

Newsletter Club? Keep

looking for detailed

information in the coming

future.

We will meet once a

month throughout the

school year.

Every day we went back to the secret room, and every day the lady of the painting answered one question for

us. It took over a month but we now know what was going on. The lady’s name is Eldora and she lived in the

secret library for as long as she could remember. The books allow you to go into a story and take part of it. If

something goes wrong all you had to do was close the book and it would all go back to normal.

Now all three of us were going back to the library. Inside we called for Eldora. When she came to us she

asked as she always did “what is your question?”

I answered back “Can we go into a book?”

Eldora smiled “I thought you would never ask.” She pulled out a book and opened it. We were then

transported to a small farm. In the distance we could see a twister heading towards us.

“Were in Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz.” Tess said

“Come on lets go into the house” Eve called as she raced inside.

Little by little we watched the story go by. We joined the band on the journey to Oz and learned things

about the characters even the writer didn’t know. It was a journey I will never forget.

When the book ended we went back into the library. We discovered that only an hour had passed.

Eldora told us it was time to go back and that we could come back the next day. We left talking about all that

had happen. We couldn’t wait to go back to the secret library,

Pen Pal Program

Home School Association for

Military Families

I wanted to let you know about the HSAMF (Home

School Association for Military Families) Pen Pal

Program for both military and civilian

homeschooled children.

Our Pen Pal Program is a FREE literacy based,

traditional letter writing program. It is a great

way to get children writing traditional

letters, a skill that is often lost in today's society,

as well as make friends with children they would

otherwise not have met.

Quite honestly, it has been a great way to work on

grammar and spelling with my children, without

them even realizing they are

"working on school."

If you are interested, or know of any other

homeschooling families that may be interested, we

encourage you to check out our website,

www.hsamf.org Look for the Pen Pal Program

under the Programs tab.

We also want to encourage you to sign up for our

e-newsletter. Pen pal Tidbits is a bimonthly

publication that will give you fresh ideas to

share with your pen pal. For example, August 26th

was Australia Day, so the children were

encouraged to learn something new about

Australia and then share it with their pen pal.

Don't forget to share this with your homeschool

group and social networks. Thank you so much!

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me

know!
