Our building, structural and civil engineering solutions serve not only to improve and protect industrial, commercial and domestic infrastructure old and new, they also help protect and conserve resources.

By using our product systems for their new build projects and/or the sustainable rehabilitation of existing structures, planners and clients are able to achieve a higher level of quality, combined with significant-ly longer repair intervals. This not only reduces their costs but also the volume of raw materials and resources required for such work, ultimately bringing benefits for the environment.

Our investment in ecologically compatible technologies is ongoing. Our production facilities and product systems are not only state-of-the-art, they also satisfy in full all applicable environmental and safety regulations. We were one of the first companies to implement the European chemicals regulation REACH*. All our products are tested for environmental compatibility, health and safety, and are assessed according to the REACH requirements before we launch them into the market. We are able to ensure that our systems make a real and tangi-ble contribution to environmental protection and resource conserva-tion, rendering them properly sustainable.

The Emscher river rehabilitation megaproject

For over 100 years, the Emscher has been an open sewer used to drain the industrial effluent of the Ruhr region (Germany) – with obvious consequences for the environment. In 1991, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia decided to restore the river to its natural state. Following the construction of new sewage treatment plants along the course of the Emscher, 2012 saw commencement of construction work on a 50-plus kilometre long subterranean pipeline, the purpose of which is to replace the river as the effluent conduit. This once-in-a-lifetime project is due for completion in 2017. As the concrete for this, the most advanced sewerage system in the world, needs to exhibit extremely high acid resistance and durability, special superplasticisers and concrete admixtures from MC-Bauchemie are being widely applied throughout the build.

The primary purpose of innovation is to keep one step ahead of the crowd and extend development beyond the established state of the art. This is our spur – sharpened by a desire to constantly create true added value for our customers.

The research and development work that goes into the establishment of new products and systems is integral to our corporate culture and a major contributor to the success enjoyed by MC-Bauchemie. One tenth of our workforce are employed in the Research & Development division.

Chemists, mineralogists and materials technologists from our laboratories maintain very close ties with our technical product management and our specialist field advisers around the world. Through constant contact with our customers and contracting companies operating on site, we receive feedback relating to problem areas which we can then utilise for new de-velopments. We are also regular contributors to national and international research projects, and cooperate with universities and external material testing institutes.

From this fertile soil grow innovative ideas and solutions aligned to the specific requirements of our partners and their projects. Indeed, in the course of the last five decades-plus, we have developed a number of products that have gone on to become industrial standards.

MC is continuously setting new standards with its innovative developments – product systems capable of achieving previously unattained results, e.g. by facilitating application under difficult weather conditions; or solutions aligned to conserving resources and enhancing occupational health and safety. MC’s pioneering achievements include Expert Proof, a sealing system which is both bitumen- and solvent-free; then there is MC’s DySC® technology, a purely mineral pro-tective lining system for potable water conduits and containers, offering previously unachieved density and durability. Also worthy of particular mention is the new, patented polycarboxilate ether technology developed by MC for mortar and concrete admixtures.

MC-Bauchemie currently has over 20 development and production facilities around the world – including Brazil, Germany, India and Russia.

Whether your requirements are admixtures, mortars, renderings, screed products, adhesives, coatings, waterproofing barriers, sealants or speciality reprofiling solutions, we offer our partners construction chemical products and materials of the highest quality. Using special raw materials and formu-lations, we manufacture these in our own production facilities, utilising the most advanced technology in harness with the extensive expertise of our people.

All our activities are based on the principles of quality and customer dedica-tion, and our manufacturing operations are no different. From our admixture and bitumen plants, through our laboratories and our warehouses and on to our logistics services, we maintain the same high standards. Our production facilities are certified to ISO 9001 and are regularly audited both by MC’s own quality management and external third-party inspectors. Our laborato-ries in the individual production departments test every batch before filling, packaging and despatch. This enables us to ensure that only products that meet our own high quality specifications leave our sites. With our modern logistics, we also ensure that order consignments reach our customers in accordance with their scheduling requirements.

Cutting-edge PCE production

With a patented process developed in-house and a new production plant that came into service in mid 2012, MC-Bauchemie is now able to manufacture a new generation of concrete and mortar admixtures based on polycarboxylate ethers (PCE). Production is very much state-of-the-art, underpinned by a separately managed health and safety system which exceeds all the demands of current environmental and noise control legislation. With its own PCE produc-tion capability, MC can develop, test and manufacture concrete and mortar admixtures with greater independence, greater speed and greater alignment to customer requirements.

Construction Chemicals

Whether ready-mixed concrete suppliers or the prefabrication industry, concrete goods manufacturers or screed installers – they all benefit from the high quality of our concrete and mor-tar admixtures, site products and screed systems.

We support our partners on a holistic basis. We provide key concrete-related technology, perform initial trials in construction material laborato-ries and support suitability tests. We will assist with the establishment of metering systems and we ensure the environmentally compatible supply of concrete admixtures by tanker or swap body container. With our modern systems tailored to each individual application, we endeavour to continually improve the manufacture and quality of concrete and concrete products while effectively simplifying the associated application and post-treatment processes.

With our admixtures, every performance feature of concrete and screed can be specifically tailored to an individual set of requirements – from final strength, density and resistance to surface quality and ease of application.

Consequently, we are able to provide architects and planners with new avenues for achieving high quality combined with economy in their con-struction projects, helping them to make concrete better in every respect.

Giant structures subject to special requirements

The Niederaussem power station in Germany boasts the highest natural draft cooling tower in the world. Built in 2006, it measures 200 metres high and has a base diameter of 145 metres. In projects of this magnitude and importance, special requirements are placed on the concrete, and particularly that of the cooling tower inner shell. Here, admixtures and auxiliary materials from MC were used to ensure that the high-performance concrete employed offered the requisite high resistance to acid attack. Following the success of the Niederaussem project, this technology has been applied in the construction of further cooling towers such as those at the Neurath power plant, also in Germany.

We offer an integrated range of solutions for waterproofing structures, from bitumen coatings and DPCs/horizontal bar-riers to sealing slurries and quality repair renders.

Providing effective protection against damp, moisture and water is a basic prerequisite for any repair to last. Consequently, waterproofing is invariably at the heart of the holistic solutions we offer. Such concepts include mortars for joint sealing and consolidation, moisture-regulating renders for internal applications, and waterproofing systems for structural components in contact with the earth. With our Oxal, Nafulex and Exzellent product systems, we offer clients, architects, planners and applicators a fully comprehensive portfolio for the protection and repair of damp-damaged structures – providing effective waterproofing both for new constructions and historical buildings.

Conserving and refurbishing our heritage

An 800-year history and proximity to the river Main have taken their toll on the Historical Museum of Frankfurt. The masonry and render have been heavily damaged by rising damp and unrelenting salt ingress. However, extensive restoration work in keeping with the original appearance of the fabric, using MC-Bauchemie’s speciality moisture- and climate-regulating rendering system Exzellent and the special joint mortar Oxal SMTK, enabled the museum to reopen its doors – in May 2012 – to a new and resplendent future.

Modern industrial floor combines high tech and visual appeal

The floor coatings applied in the food industry need to be resistant to mechanical stress. They also have to withstand chemical attack from acids and organic substances, not to mention the rigours of frequent cleaning. In addition to quality and hygiene, however, ap-pearance also plays its part. So, for the commercial kitchens of the world’s largest aircraft caterer, MC-Bauchemie combined two MC-DUR floor coating systems in order to meet both the qualitative and the visual demands of the project.

Protection Technologies / Injection Systems

Wherever the load capacity of a structure has to be re-instated or cracks and walls sealed against penetrating water, we can provide fast and efficient assistance with world class injection technologies.

Concrete and masonry, whether in the structural or civil engineering sphere, have to meet high requirements with respect to strength, re-silience and water tightness. Wherever damp walls, cracked ceilings, unwanted cavities or unstable soils occur, the building fabric is going to be compromised. Our unique injection technologies based on duromer, elastomer and hydrostructure resins or mineral suspensions, quickly and durably protect endangered structures from water, returning them to stability.

In addition to our service-proven and environmentally compatible injec-tion systems, planners, clients, owners and applicators also benefit from the on-site advice provided by our expert consultants and application engineers. We carry out regular injection training courses and will, if required, support injection jobs from planning to implementation – be it in Europe, Australia, Brazil, India or Malaysia. The combination we offer of advanced injection systems and individual advice creates a solid basis for the effective protection and long-term stability of structures. It also provides the foundation for our global success in the injection field.

SMART tunnel sealed

Tunnel construction constitutes one of the most difficult engineering activities en-countered in the building industry. Here, injection work is a necessary component of almost every part of the process, with cracks in the concrete constantly arising from the interaction of excavation work, shifting rock and water. In addition, joints need to be per-manently sealed. During construction of the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART), a multi-tiered road tunnel system serving the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, a combination of various injection technologies from MC-Bauchemie was used.

The repair of sewer and pipeline systems is hugely impor-tant to the utilities sector. We support planning engineers and contractors right down the line – from damage analysis to refurbishment planning and implementation.

Our special product systems will provide long-term protection across the full spectrum of requirements encountered in a sewerage network – from service lines, public sewers and manholes to industrial wastewater systems. Combining the twin benefits of quality and cost-efficiency, MC-Bauchemie solutions have enjoyed huge success in this domain over the years.

In addition to individual repair concepts, high-quality system solutions and a wide-ranging service network, we offer a comprehensive service package covering all repair activities required in subterranean infra-structure. These include interceptor refurbishment, liner technology, systems for robot deployment, and injection technologies. High-profile sewerage restoration

A large part of the public sewerage system in Hamburg, the origins of which extend back to the middle of the 19th century, was constructed in the form of masonry conduits. Today, some of these sewers are showing signs of damage as a result of biogenic sulphuric acid corro-sion and leakage. Having committed to the long-term rehabilitation of a damaged interceptor section, the city’s municipal water and sewerage utility opted for a chemically resistant and durable mineral reprofiling and coating mortar from MC-Bauchemie, plus a special coating system offering resistance specifically against biogenic sulphuric acid corrosion. This was successfully applied to more than 2,000 m2 of sewer and manhole walling.

Consequently, we have a certain set of criteria according to which we develop our people, offering them individual scope and opportunities to progress their career.

Training and development writ large at MC

In addition to the classic form of training in the various disciplines of relevance, MC offers young foreign school-leavers and university graduates a two-year international trainee programme. In this, the trainees are taken systematically through all the basic training modules as well as language courses and are given an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the various divisions and departments of MC at our Bottrop headquarters and other international locations. They are then encouraged to work closely with selected mentors on specific activities and projects before they return to their home countries.
