HCMGA Members SpotlightIrene Hoadley, Master Gardener EmeritusBy Jacqueline Leo, Master Gardener

When Irene Hoadley moved from College Stationto San Marcos in the mid 90’s, she learned quicklythat the soil and plants were much different thanfrom the previous places she had lived. So, Ms.Hoadley decided to take the Master Gardener’sclass in 1998 because she knew the importanceof a “good foundation of knowledge” for gardening in this area.

Over the years, one thing she has learned through her love of gardening isperseverance. “Although, a lot of time must be devoted, and at times it can getdiscouraging, plants and trees enhance the landscape and are helpful to theenvironment.” Ms. Hoadley goes on to say,” The benefit of gardening gives youthe instant gratification of growing plants by putting your hands in the ground andmixing up the soil and then reaping what you sow. I really think that’s important.”

Page 6: mconwill@aol.com Recording Secretary – Helen Aristar- Dry ... · Holiday Succulent Arrangements Saturday, November 2, 2019 - 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Join Master Gardener, Stephanie

Ms. Hoadley uses her valuable gardening skills to serve her community. She hasspent over twenty years working at the natural plant garden behind the oldextension office in San Marcos which she thoroughly enjoyed. Ms. Hoadley hasalso served over two decades with Habitat for Humanity. There, she still works onlandscaping for the new homes being built. “I’ve had a chance to meet people Inever would have been in contact with. I’ve also been able to see different parts ofthe community and have made lifelong friends with other Master Gardeners."

Remembering Janet ConteBy Marilyn Love, Master Gardener

Our fellow Master Gardener, JanetConte, passed away on August 10after a battle with cancer. She, herhusband Mike and son Nick were longtime residents of Kyle where Janet wasan active member of the Kyle GardenClub. In 2012, Janet certified as aMaster Gardener. She served as theRecording Secretary in 2014-2015 andserved on Greenhouse and DemoGarden Committees when theExtension was in San Marcos. Someof her friends made a donation toHCMGA in her honor. As Mike said inhis acknowledgment, “Janet loved

gardening, and she especially lovedthe Master Gardeners and theirprograms. As she would always say,‘Those are my people!’” I will miss her,her love of life and her sense of humor.
