includesaninsurancethatcoversaccidentsonyourwaytoandfromthecampus.

Toensureexcellentqualityand intensivestudentsupport,attendanceofcourses ismandatory.Generally,classesareheldfrom

09:00–12:15andfrom13:15–16:45.Inadditiontothetheoreticalcomponent,mostcoursesincludeapracticalcomponent,which

requirestheactiveparticipationofstudents.Instructioninsmallgroups,teamtasksandprojectsaswellascasestudiesarehighly

valued.MCIusestheEuropeanCreditTransferSystem(ECTS).TheECTSwasdevelopedbytheEuropeanCommissioninorderto

makemutualrecognitionofcourseseasier.Accordingtothesystem,eachcourseisassignedcredits,whichrepresenttheaverage

studentworkloadforthesuccessfulcompletionofthecourse.Thefullworkloadinoneacademicyearis60credits,thus30credits

persemester.Internationalexchangestudentsusuallytakecoursesworthbetween15and30ECTScreditspersemester.

Examinationsgenerally takeplace at theendof the semester. Learning achievement is primarily assessed througha written

examination,undercertaincircumstancesincombinationwithaprojectwork.Insomecases,examinationsarealsooral.Forapositive

evaluationofwrittenexaminations,60%ofthetotalpointsmustbeachieved.Ingeneral,thepositivecompletionofacourserequires

thepositiveevaluationofthewrittenexamand/orproject,activeparticipationthroughoutthecourseand80%courseattendance.

Theevaluationsystemisasfollows:

examinations & grades.

MCIoffersanumberofcoursesspecificallytargetedatexchangestudents.Thesecoursesarefrequentlytaughtbyrenownedguest

professors.Theyalsocoverextracurriculartopics(e.g.UnderstandingAustrianSocietyandCulture).Youarewelcometoattendthese

coursesinadditiontothecoursesofferedbythevariousdegreeprograms.

The“GermanLanguageCourseforIncomingStudents”isalsopartofourinternationalprogram.Studentsaredividedintodifferent

groups–frombeginnerstoadvancedlevel.Contrarytoothercourses,theGermancourseisnotfreeofcharge(coursefee:EUR95

persemester).

oldtownisoneofthemostbeautifulandbest-preservedmedievalcitycentersinAustria.

Innsbruckcanlookbackon800yearsofhistory.AfteritsfoundationInnsbruckrapidlybecameanimportantcenterfortradedueto

itsconvenientlocationonthewaytotheBrenner,thelowestpassovertheAlpsat1,372meters.Thetransportationofgoodsand

peoplebetweenVeniceandGermanymadeInnsbruckaninterregionaltraffichub.Here,tradersandtravelersfromalloverEurope

met.The locationononeofthemostfrequentedtransitroutes inEuropenotonlyprovidesbusiness impulsesbutalso leadsto

trafficandenvironmentalproblems.

ThenameofInnsbruckgoesbacktothebridgebuiltinthe12thcenturyovertheriverInn.Foundedin1180bytheCountofAndechs

ontherightbanksoftheInn, Innsbruckwassoonsurroundedbyfortificationwallsandwasgrantedcitystatus in1239. In1363

InnsbruckandTyrolcameundertheHabsburgs’dominionandthusbecameapartofAustria.InnsbruckwasacenterofEuropean

politicsandcultureunderthereignofEmperorMaximilian I (1459–1519).ForhismarriagetoBiancaMariaSforzafromMilan,

MaximiliancommissionedtheconstructionofwhathasbecomeInnsbruck‘s landmark,the“GoldenRoof”. Inadditiontothisroof

with its2,657gildedcoppershinglesanditsbalconythecourtnobilityusedforwatchingwhatwasgoingonthecitysquare,the

“BlackMen”intheImperialChurch– larger-than-lifebronzestatuesof importanthistoricalfiguresfordecoratinghistomb–are

alsoattributedtoMaximilian.

Inthe16thcentury,underArchdukeFriedrichIIandhiswifePhilippineWelser, Innsbruckexperiencedanotherheyday.Thenoble

couple’sarttreasures,rarepiecesandcuriositiescanstillbeviewedtodayatAmbrasCastle. In1765, Innsbruckwasthelocation

fortheweddingofthesecondeldestsonofEmpressMariaTheresia,ArchdukeLeopold,totheSpanishprincessMariaLudovica.

TheTriumphalArchwasbuiltattheendofMaria-Theresien-Strassetowelcometheweddingguests.In1805,Tyrolcameunderthe

dominionofBavaria,alliedwithFrance.TheTyroleanRebellionof1809againstBavarianandFrenchtroopsandtheTyroleanleader

oftherebellion,AndreasHofer(1767–1810),aredepictedinthecircularfrescoesofthe“Riesenrundgemälde”,inwhichthethird,

decisivebattleonBergiselagainstNapoleonicandBavariantroops isportrayed.TheFirstandSecondWorldWarsandtheNS

regimebroughtaboutdrasticchangesforTyrolanditspopulation.TheseparationfromSouthTyrolfollowingthePeaceTreatyof

St.Germainin1919hasinfluencedTyroleanpoliticsandidentitytothisday.

Inadditiontothecitybeingabridgebetweennorthandsouth,atrafficandadministrativecenterandtheresidenceoftheTyrolean

lineoftheHabsburgs, Innsbruckwasconnectedtothe international railwaysysteminthe19thcentury– further facilitating its

developmentasacenterfortourism.Inthe1860‘stheAlpsstartedtoemergeastheregion’smaintouristattraction.In1964and

1976InnsbruckhostedtheOlympicWinterGamesandbecameknownworldwide.Eversince,InnsbruckandTyrolhaveplayedakey

roleinAustria‘stourismindustry.

Today,theTyroleancapitalwithits130,000inhabitantsisacenterforhighereducation,business,andcultureaswellassportsand

tourism.ThecombinationofitsbeautifullandscapeandhistoricaltraditionandthevitalityofamoderncitymakeInnsbruckagreat
