Areas of Expertise

Microbial spoilage and corrosion in marine,

petroleum and aviation industries.

Staff Qualifications &

Experience

Graham Hill, Managing Director/Consultant:

Graham graduated from Southampton University in

1983 with a joint honours degree in Biology and

Oceanography and then spent a brief period

employed by the Microbiology Department at the

University of Wales, Cardiff, before helping to

establish ECHA Microbiology later that year. He has

30 years of practical experience of world wide

investigation of microbial spoilage and corrosion,

particularly in the petroleum, aviation and marine

industries. He is author or co-author of over 40

technical papers and book chapters, primarily on

petroleum microbiology and microbially influenced

corrosion and has made many technical presentations

on these subjects world-wide. These include a key

chapter on sampling and monitoring of fuels in the

ASTM Manual 47 on Fuel System Microbiology

published in 2003. Graham was the Chairman of the

International Association for Stability, Handling &

Use of Liquid Fuels (IASH) from 2008 -2009 and

also chaired the Energy Institute (previously Institute

Page 14: MCF Consultancies 2016

of Petroleum), Microbiology Committee from the

mid 90's until 2011. He retains an active involvement

in that committee and also IATA's Technical Fuels

Group and maintains an active role in the IATA task

force developing best practice for preventing

microbiological contamination in aircraft fuel tanks.

He is a voting member and active on ASTM

Committees D02 (Petroleum Products and

Lubricants), E34 (Occupational Health & Safety) and

E35 (Pesticides Anti-microbials and Alternative

Control Agents). Graham was previously director of

ECHA’s Testing and Consultancy Service and since

2012 is ECHA's Managing Director.

Gareth Williams, Microbiologist:

Gareth graduated from Cardiff University in 2002

with a First Class Honours degree in Microbiology

including an industrial placement year at Whitman

Laboratories Ltd., Estée Lauder Companies Inc. as a

Quality Assurance Microbiologist. This was

followed by a PhD in 2006, also at Cardiff

University, investigating the use of antimicrobial

agents to control catheter-associated Proteus mirabilis

infection. From 2006 to 2010, Gareth was a post-

doctoral researcher at the Welsh School of Pharmacy,

Cardiff University. His research included

investigation of the susceptibility of Staphylococcus

aureus (MSSA/MRSA) to disinfectants used in

Intensive Therapy Units and also an extensive project

examining the viability of spore-forming bacteria on

surfaces and optimising the efficacy of biocide

treatments. Gareth published 14 papers over this

period. He was also a part-time lecturer at the School

of Health and Life Sciences, UWIC.

Gareth joined ECHA in February 2010 and is now

applying his extensive microbiological experience

providing consultancy for ECHA’s customers in the

petroleum, aviation, marine and engineering

industries. He also undertakes and supervises

research projects, both for customers and as part of

ECHA’s internal product research and development

programme.
