Tips for a stress free holiday!

No matter what holiday you celebrate during this busy season, it can be stressful for both adults & kids. Below are a few tips to help keep everyone calm & happy!

· Keep it simple: We have a tendency to want to fit every activity and party into the holiday as possible. Sit down with your family and decide what you are going to do or participate in before the season gets started.

· Remember routines: This is really important for parents with smaller children. When their routines are continuously broken, they can get stressed out; both the child and parent! Try your best to keep the daily routine going as much as possible.

· Meal Time: This is an important one! Family meal time is important for reconnecting with each other; but during the holiday season it's even more so. It's a time to unwind at the end of the day and reconnect with each other.

· Nutrition: Serving home cooked nutritious meals is important.

· Limit video games and TV: Easier said than done, but physical activity, for both adults & kids, is important to help reduce stress.

· Hang on to those family traditions: Every family has some sort of holiday tradition. These traditions can make children feel comforted and secure. They know what to expect.

· Share: Help children to learn the real meaning of the holiday season and that it's not all about getting, but giving. Giving the gift of your time is one of the most valuable gifts a person can offer.

· Laugh & Relax: Find time this holiday season to relax with your family & friends.

Happy Holidays from Marine Corps Family Team Building!

The holidays and impending New Year are a time for resolution and change for many people. We make our lists of things we want to do and need to accomplish. Often times, we set these goals without a plan and, as the saying goes, “if you fail to plan you plan to fail.” What can you do to make your goals more achievable? Make them S.M.A.R.T.!S - Specific. Instead of “I want to lose weight this year,” try “I will lose 10 pounds in 2018.”M - Measurable. Make sure you are setting your sights on something quantifiable. For instance: “I will decrease my 5K time by 15 seconds.”A - Actionable. What are you going to do to reach your goal? If you want to lose 10 pounds, what steps are you going to take to get there?R - Realistic. Set your sights on something that you control and that can actually happen. We would all like to win the lottery, but is that a realistic way to build up your retirement savings?T - Timely. Set deadlines and stick to them. The feeling of accomplishment will make you go back for more!

SEMPER FIT

5 Tips for Holiday indulgence that keeps your program on track.

Its that time of year again!!!! Turkey, Stuffing, Mashed potatoes, Gravy and all the other stuff that causes our tables to grown with the sheer volume of food. On average Americans consume between 3000 and 4500 Calories at a holiday meal and the equivalent amount of fat equal to 3 sticks of butter. That's a lot of calories! In fact to bun 3025 calories a 200 pound man would need to run 20 miles in 2.5 hours. So what are some of the best ways to keep your program intact and keep it from going completely going off the rails this time of year? I have put together some tips that you can use to keep calories in check during this often difficult time of temptation.

1. Schedule your workouts: With the hectic season it's easy to end up missing workouts. Although exercise is not the most effective means of keeping your weight down and calorie control; workouts could end up on the back burner when other things like shopping, parties, and travel take precedence. Even if you don't normally use a little black book to schedule your life, at this time of year it can keep you on track and focused. Don't just schedule your workouts schedule everything. House cleaning, projects, meetings, appointments, etc. This is because if you don't schedule everything, including workouts, things will pop up that demand your attention and end up taking priority over your workouts. Get a pencil, appointment book and use it.

2. Choose lower calorie options at parties and Holiday Dinners: Eat your veggies! Generally vegetable dishes have fewer calories but you are going to have to choose wisely. Green bean casserole, broccoli and cheese au gratin, Honey glazed carrots, etc can have lots of calories so avoid those or eat them sparingly. Choose vegetable dishes that have less fat like salads, grilled/roasted veggies, steamed veggies, raw carrots, corn on the cob etc.. The idea is to fill up on lower calorie options and go sparingly on high fat foods like casseroles.

3. Don't drink your calories: Try to drink mostly water and not sodas, beer/liquor, juice, and sweet tea. Its very easy to drink several hundred calories. Those calories add up and if you are like me I would much rather spend my calories eating food rather than drinking them.

4. Skip the deserts: High in sugar and fat deserts are expensive in terms of calories. Fruit is always going to be better as a desert in terms of calories. But if you are like many of us it's the best part of the meal. A quick web search for Reduced Calorie Deserts will get you many different ideas for cooking lower calorie deserts.

5. Bank your calories: The day before and the day after Christmas dinner I make a point of eating very healthy and low calorie. Then the day of the Feast I eat almost nothing until it's time for the main meal. I don't eat breakfast in the morning anyway (another topic for a later date) then for lunch I will eat soup and a piece of fruit and I push that lunch out later in the day. By the time I get to Dinner I have had barely 400 calories for the day and I ate lunch 1400 so I am not ravenous by 1900. That leaves more room in terms of calories for indulgence. Weight gain is really about calories in vs out so if by the end of the week I still hit my weekly calorie total I should not gain any weight.
