MID-CITIES CARE CORPS SPRINGS INTOACTION WITH THE M.A.R.I. FOUNDERS WORK DAYSpring came early to Mid-Cities

Care Corps (MCCC) and brought anuplifting burst of energy and excite-ment. This year marked the kick-offof what MCCC plans to make anannual event in our community. TheM.A.R.I. (Making A Real Impact)

Founders Work Day is in remem-brance of Mari Donaldson, a founderof MCCC.

    The Founders Work Day idea

sprang from Maris own family. The

family schedules a work day in earlyMarch as a way to honor their moth-er/grandmother/great grandmothers

birthday and her spirit that becamethe mission of MCCC in 1981 to

preserve the independence of SeniorNeighbors in Northeast Tarrant

County. Last year 14 members ofMaris family participated in the workday at a MCCC senior neighbors

home. Their energy and spirit werecontagious, as is evident in the photoat the right!!

In honor of Mari and motivated toextend this spirited outreach, MCCChas organized our first annual Found-ers Work Day in March 2009. Thisinitiative is generating interest withinour community. The Founders Work

Day program is focused on outdoorspring maintenance jobs such as rak-ing leaves, trimming shrubs, generalyard clean-up, window washing, exte-rior painting, and minor home re-pairs. A mailing to 200+ senior neigh-bors in our service footprint resultedin over 60 responses for assistance.MCCC also teamed with the City ofHurst Employee Work Day programto support homes on their list.

    The community support of this

outreach to our senior neighborshas been exciting!! The followinggroups have signed on to participatein 2009:

    Maris FamilyTree Tops SchoolPathway Church

    Compass ChristianChurch Youth Group

    Good Shepherd

    Catholic Community

    Youth Group

    MCCC Volunteers

    Birdville Retired Teachers

These groups and individualshave come together from Hurst,Euless, Bedford, North RichlandHills, Grapevine, Colleyville, South-lake, and Keller to help MCCCsenior neighbors. (See insert andvisit www.midcitiescarecorps.org)

Each group was provided with aflat of flowers to plant at their worksite, thanks to Delta Theta ChiSorority for expediting the deliveryof flowers through their annual fundraising event. Specialthanks to Mr. CsAce Hardware ofHurst for supportingthe project byproviding essentialsupplies required forthe scope of this pro-

    ject.Yards have been

    r a k e d , b u s h e strimmed and homespainted. Projects re-main; and MCCCwelcomes churches,civic, and volunteer

groups to join this program via sup-port this year and/or anticipation to

join this outreach program in 2010.Please call our office at 817-282-0531 if you have an interest or wishto explore.

    The flowers planted provide a

touch of Spring that will extend wellinto the summer for our clients.Hugs were the reward shared be-tween the youth, our senior neigh-bors, and MCCC volunteers andrevealed the appreciation thatbridged the generations during thisoutreach. MCCC is confident theFounders Work Day experiences

provided positive impressions thatwill grow in the minds and hearts ofthe participants, both the young

and the young at heart.MCCC proudly uses the M.A.R.I.acronym for this program to honorour founder. Imagine the smile Mariwould have, knowing that the seedshe planted over 25 years ago is stillgrowing heartily, blooming, andMaking AReal Impact in 2009!

Spring has a way of rejuvenating HOPE. Buds from trees create a haze with anticipation of a full canopy.Landscapes takes on new life with expectations of newly planted flowers and the recurrence of perennialbluebonnets.

Nature has a subtle way of reminding us annually that hope springs eternal. Participating with the vol-unteer youth groups in March during the Mid-Cities Care Corps (MCCC) M.A.R.I. Founders Work Dayprojects (cover page story) reinforced this basic human nature for me this season. The inaugural FoundersDay projects bridged the generations and revealed the universal truth that hope springs eternal for theyoung and young at heart! All the national/global chatter about trying times was put into perspective bythe hugs and smiles shared between the young volunteers and MCCC senior neighbors.

April is National Volunteer Month. We encourage our volunteers to meet other MCCC volunteers atthe Volunteer Luncheon on April 30 as the Board of Directors and Staff express appreciation for the serviceand caring spirit extended to our Senior Neighbors.

Booker T. Washington captured the spirit of volunteerism with the statement:If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else. Please be an ambassador forvolunteerism during April by sharing your experiences and rewards with a friend.Encourage folks to volunteer with MCCC or any organization that addresses needsin our community. HOPE is eternal and mighty invigorating. It is a real high and keepsones seeming challenges in perspective!
