Cuthbert By Karen Lanier T his summer, the Midland College (MC) green and gold roadrunner mascot will be “singin’ the blues.” MC will partner with Tall City Blues Fest, a multiday mu- sic festival, to offer educational workshops and seminars as part of the July 29-31 weekend festival’s offerings in Centen- nial Park in downtown Midland. Pre-registration for festival workshops will be offered through Midland College’s Community Programs Continuing Education department, and all proceeds from workshop en- rollment will benefit Midland College. “Community programs are the ‘fun’ classes in the Continuing Education catalog, and partnering with Tall City Blues Fest has opened an offering of fun classes that we wouldn’t otherwise have been able to offer,” explains Brenda Cordero, associate director of Com- munity Programs Continuing Education at MC. Additionally, Tall City Blues Fest will donate 10 percent of its advance and at-the-gate Weekend Festival Pass pur- chases to Midland College Kids’ College to be earmarked for scholarships. Lisa Grissom, festival producer, explains that the festi- val will include artists’ booths, a variety of food and drink booths, a business galley, non-profit showcase, shrimp and crawfish boil and BBQ cook off, along with some of the best blues performers around. She further emphasizes that the Blues Fest will “have something for everybody. In just 2 ½ hours, Craig Coffman will share “tricks of the trade” so that you can start having fun right away playing your favorite songs. Coffman’s approach reveals how the pros play. He has extensive ex- perience as a professional pianist and music director. For over 25 years, his “Just Once” workshops have brought seldom-taught and highly sought after information to more than 100,000 people nationwide. The workshops are now being offered online. In the live webinars, students log on with their computers (in the comfort of their own home with their own pianos and guitars) and participate in the class. They can ask questions and interact with the instructor just like they are attending a traditional class setting, but they have the added advantage of sitting at home in private! This will be a hands-on, interactive playing and discussion workshop. Prerequisites: none. Acoustic Blues Guitar Essentials, or “How to Sound Like You’re Playing the Blues” Instructor: Bernie Pearl, accompanied by Mike Barry, bass guitarist Presented by: Texas Guitar Company 1:30-3:00 p.m. This session is for guitarists of all levels who wish to improve their overall blues sound and technique. Emphasis is on hand position and more effective strumming and picking. Damping, using a thumb pick, slide guitar, and two and three-finger blues picking are some of the subjects covered. Acoustic guitars only. Thumb pick and slides will be provided to all students. Prerequisites: none. Blues Guitar 101: I, IV, V Instructor: Anthony Stauffer, blues guitar teacher, creator of StevieSnacks.com 12:30-1:30 p.m. In this basic guitar workshop, Anthony will introduce beginners to the three foundational elements in 12-bar blues. They will learn where the terms “I, IV and V” come from and how they are used to form a 12-bar progression. A major focus of the workshop will be learning how to “feel” the changes in a 12-bar progression and understanding several different 12-bar progressions found in blues music. Lastly, the 12-bar concept will be demonstrated through a variety of song styles, reinforcing the common elements in most blues songs—the I, IV and V. Prerequisites: none. Blues Guitar 202: Deconstructing SRV Licks Instructor: Anthony Stauffer, blues guitar teacher, creator of StevieSnacks.com 2:00-3:00 p.m. In this intermediate to advanced guitar workshop, Anthony will explain and demonstrate a technique for learning SRV licks by breaking them down into small, reusable pieces. Participants will also be shown how these small pieces can be put back together in various combinations to form new licks. Finally, students will be shown how to use pattern recognition to deconstruct solos faster. Prerequisites: an understanding of 12-bar blues, intermediate skill level. Touring and recording artist Woody Russell examines the possibilities of expand- ing the blues form structurally and lyrically while respecting the traditions that have made it one of America’s most popular, endearing and most exported art forms. This course is an introduction to finding your voice in the blues. Original songs encouraged, guitars welcome (song swap: time permitting). Prerequisites: none.
