“Women Inspiring Innovation through Imagination” 2013 Women’s History Month Celebration
“Modern invention has banished the spinning wheel, and the same law of progress makes the woman of today a different woman from her grandmother,” quoted Susan B. Anthony, influential contributor to the women’s suffrage movement. Indeed, women of today can enjoy many of the freedoms that women in the nineteenth century were not afforded. The right to vote was not only a notable accomplishment, but also a sign of progression. March is National Women’s History Month. Beginning as “Women’s History Week” in 1978 in Sonoma County, California, the public celebration included International Women’s Day on March 8th. While the celebration recognizes women who have contributed to the advancement and equal rights of women, it is also a time to pay homage to women who are

currently making an impact on society through politics, medicine, arts, technology, and other fields. Since 1987, the achievements of American women have been recognized and honored. The ASU theme for the 2013 Women’s History Month Celebration is “Women Inspiring Imagination through Innovation.” Arkansas State University has a host of events planned that is a culmination of remembrance, inspiration, and appreciation. The Multicultural Center’s Living Legends Luncheon, which is a part of the Women’s Leadership Conference, features guest speaker Ginger Beebe, First Lady of Arkansas. Please see page three of the newsletter for a full list of the Women’s History Month Celebration.

A s we celebrate Women’s History Month, it is important to acknowledge the achievements of women throughout history. The MC offers you the opportunity to learn about women who made a change in society and history. One of the many books that the Multicultural Center has to offer; Sonia Sotomayor “The True American Dream.” Sonia Sotomayor made a tremendous impact to our nation on August 26, 2009; she became the first Hispanic Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. It is easy to state the facts and achievements of Sotomayor without knowing her struggles. Sonia Sotomayor worked hard to reach her goals; she was raised in poverty , suffered the death of her father at a young age, and experienced discomfort because of her ethnicity throughout her years of college. Her book is a must-read.
