Lee was tired of the usual suspects of youth work practice... DJ Workshops, Poetry, Dance, Graffiti, Football, CV Building, Interview techniques etc. stating "there are only so many Dizzee Rascals and Rio Ferdinands we can create." He also argues that by trying to live their dreams vicariously through young people. "I've worked with quite a few youth workers who are frustrated record producers or football managers.

MBYP enhances the entrepreneurial talents that many young people have. Forget the usual, lets make a few cakes and sell them for a quid MBYP offers practical experience of running a real business or social enterprise and great development opportunities for young People.

some youth workers actually damage young people

Lee Blake was excluded from school six times in the last two years of formal education. He just didn't get on with school. However, he went to college to study travel &tourism and really responded to the different teaching methodologies and ended up graduating with a 2:1 at the age of 21.

He then gained a teaching qualification and achieved a long held dream of living and working abroad. Five years and over 30 countries later Lee returned to England in 2001, and worked as an informal educator/youth worker in inner city Birmingham. He studied a Diploma in Community, Youth and Play Work and gained qualifications in Mentoring and Counselling. He rose up the ranks and ended up managing a £500,000 ESF Project. After taking his career far as he could - without waiting for somebody to die!! He left the safety of council employment to concentrate on a business he started in his spare bedroom - 50FIFTY CLOTHING.

When he started to make money from selling T-shirts and Hoodies he began to deliver design and enterprise workshops to young people. He then developed an alternative education programme which local youth centres delivered in partnership with 50FIFTY.

Made By Young People started as a direct response to young people telling Lee. "we want to learn about Business and legal ways to make money".

The Made By Young People (MBYP) network is coming to your area

Are you looking for an innovative way to engage young people? Want to tap into the creative and entrepreneurial talents your service users have? Want to do something about anti social behavior and unemployment? Made By Young People could be for you...

What is it all about?

MBYP teaches young people (and staff) how to set up and run a real business or social enterprise based on the business we started in 2006, 50FIFTY CLOTHING. We now have several income streams from various websites a few of which are below:

www.50FIFTYCLOTHING.comwww.tshirtprintingbirmingham.co.uk www.bannerprintingbirmingham.co.uk www.ukoffootball.co.uk

We also rank very highly on google locally (Birmingham). If you google the phrase "t-shirt printing Birmingham" or "printed banners Birmingham" you'll see we have several entries on the first page!

The exciting news is we are confident we can do the same for you.

Prior to starting the business I worked in inner city Birmingham as a youth worker and teacher with young people who were excluded from school. When I started to make money from selling T-shirts and Hoodies it dawned on me that this could be a fantastic way to motivate young people. I developed a series of youth work workshops around the five outcomes, then wrote an alternative education programme based around entrepreneurship. We are now in the process of building a Network of Made By Young People projects all over the UK.

I wondered whether you'd like to start a local branch of MBYP in your area? We'll provide you with EVERYTHING you need to empower your young people or service users and staff to start and run a profitable business or social enterprise enterprise. We can provide

thorough initial training all the equipment needed a fantastic website ongoing support and training all the processes that made our business run profitablyMBYP Resource PackAccess to Online Learning

Please call me on on 0871 595 5050 or 07878 156 010 if you’d like more information. I plan to be in your area within the next two weeks so would love the opportunity to come and tell you more about this innovative project that is transforming lives.

Many thanks

History

50FIFTY began in 2004 when I was racially abused at an England football match. I decided to mix the colours of my Father's flag (Jamaica) with the pattern of my Mother's flag (UK) as I felt the UNITED KINGDOM of Jamaica Flag better represented my own identity - half and half or 50FIFTY.

I sold my first products at Notting Hill Carnival in 2006, taught myself graphic and web design and started to make money. I then branched into garment decoration and soon found our sites top of google and overwhelmed with orders.

I took the gamble to leave my job as an informal educator with Birmingham City Council in March 2008 and since then turnover has more than doubled - even during the recent recession.

We started Made By Young People as a project to engage young people in design and enterprise and now offer a host of workshops - lasting anywhere from a couple of hours to a period of several weeks. We also offer alternative education for young people whose needs are not met by mainstream education.

We are now building the Made By Young People Network all over the UK. We want to deal with the most common complaints teenagers have these days:

We are boredWe have nothing to doWe have no jobWe have no money

And turn them on their heads.

Mission To give all young people regardless of ability, race or class practical experience of starting and or running a real business or social enterprise based on clothing and design.

#1 Garment Decoration

We grew our business from a part time affair running from a spare bedroom with just one staff member into having a city centre showroom turning over more than £10,000 per month by giving good service, word of mouth advertising and by understanding GOOGLE. Locally we dominate the first page of GOOGLE and until recently had more leads than we could handle. We are confident that we could do the same for you based on the success we've had in Birmingham.

One of the best things about this business is that EVERYONE is a potential customer.

Most young people (though not all we appreciate) are crazy about fashion. In our experience its up their with music and sport. By becoming a network member you'll have all the equipment, knowledge and expertise at your finger tips to start the next big thing in clothing. Some of the biggest names in fashion had very humble beginnings. The young people you work with may be sitting on the next big thing in fashion, brands such as Box Fresh, Fat Face, Animal or FUBU started from humble beginnings.

One thing is certain, if they don't try, they'll never know!! The young people you work with have probably got all the ideas, they just need a way to get them out there!

We knew nothing about design when we started our business. However we learnt basic graphic design because we had to in order to make T-shirts. Since getting to know the basics we have

When we couldn't afford to pay web designers astronomical fees for decent websites we researched the best/easiest way to design websites and taught ourselves. We now build and update all of our own sites. We will build you a website, teach you how to update it. Once confident in web design, that is another income stream you could offer to your clients.

We offer basic websites that take less than a day to build for around £200. Of course more complicated websites mean you can charge much more.

refined and improved our skills. We now charge £25 per hour to our clients, so we have created a new income stream. If you have young people or staff members who show a flair for design then why not encourage them to become your professional graphic designer?

#6. Signs & Banners

world of Signs, Banners and Vehicle Graphics await you.. The equipment you'll

receive can do these too and the good news is they are VERY PROFITABLE.

We'll show you where to source the best sign and banner material, how to make quality signs and banners and all the

tricks of the trade.

#8. Workshops

The minimum time needed is two hours, but we regularly add other elements to make a series of sessions that can be delivered once a week for 6 -12 weeks or could be delivered in a block during a half term holiday.

For example -

Add ons we have delivered are sessions such as; Dragons Den Presentations, The Apprentice style entrepreneurial challenges where participants try to make money, Sales and Marketing tasks, Using the Internet to sell Tshirts, Web Design, Social Networking and Event Management

We regularly take all of our equipment (its all mobile and fits in a car) to schools, youth centres, community centres and nurseries to run Design & Enterprise Workshops. A typical day starts with a two hour design session in the morning where young people work in teams to come up with a new design or logo. The afternoon session is usually a two hour practical session where young people cut or print, pick and press their own garments.

#9. Alternative Education

We have developed the workshops into Alternative Education Project that works particularly well with young people whose needs are not being met in mainstream education. Young people learn new skills in researching, designing, making, marketing and selling T-shirts and promotional goods.

We have wrapped all of the handouts and lessons up in valuable NCFE qualifications and developed a Resource Pack that makes it easy for informal educators/youth workers/teachers to ensure national recognition for the young people we work with.

One of our members charges £2000 per learner per term for Alternative Education and has 15 learners on each course.

That's £30,000 per term!!

#10. Business Consultancy

remember what we said earlier "in this business everyone is a potential customer" so the more networking you do, the more money you’ll make.

Once you have started your business or social enterprise and been up and runningfor a while, you'll most likely be approached by lots of other people who want to Start a Business. You can charge for your time as a consultant and advise others who want to embark on the path that you've already trodden. We are regularly asked to speak in colleges, schools, business seminars to share our story. Sometimes we charge around £500, sometimes we do it for free. However, if you

as the young people attached to them start to move on in life.

- less anti social behavior, less unemployment

- we will turn unemployed people who may be receiving benefits into tax paying employees and entrepreneurs.

- MBYP always offers fair trade goods whenever possible.

We have made a decision that wherever possible fairtrade environmentally friendly garments and products must be used by all Made By Young People Network members. This way we help people in the developing world get a fair price on the goods they produce. We'll also give priority to garments that are shipped to th UK rather than flown here - thus reducing carbon footprint.

Finally, we'll ensure that all products and services are decorated by local young people - something that your customers will be able to use as fantastic Corporate and Social

Responsibility and be your unique selling point. We have used this to win business from clients such as Royal Shakespeare Company, Ikea, Santander. We'll show you how to do the same.

Made By Young People is great for everybody concerned:
