    THE SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

    Kathmandu University, School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) is an institution established in collaboration between

    Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. KUSMS launched its own constituent MBBS program in August 2001.

    The school has infrastructure and physical facilities at two locations: basic science building with all the required facilities

    is situated at a hilltop at Chaukot in the Panauti area and the university hospital is situated at Dhulikhel, within a distance

    of 3 km. easily accessible by a permanent road. Both are easily accessible with the main university site. Basic science

    department has 7 various departments with the required number of laboratories, lecture halls including PBL class rooms,

    audio visual facilities (media tech.), library with 24 hour Internet facility.

    Main university hospital, Dhulikhel Hospital is situated at Dhulikhel. Class rooms, library facilities are availableseparately at all sites. There are a total of 14 various clinical departments as required by the Norms. For community

    training and field visit there are separate sites under Dhulikhel Hospital at Kavre, Bhaktapur districts.

    Compulsory hostel facilities are provided. Recreation facilities are available at main university site.

    The school also started the postgraduate program in medical sciences since September 1999. They are MS Orthopedics

    (1999) at B&B Hospital, Lalitpur, MCh Neurosurgery (2000) at Bir Hospital, Kathmandu and MD pathology and MSc.

    Microbiology (2000) at Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara. Currently PG programs are running at B&B

    Hospital (MS Orthopaedics), Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MD Pathology/M.Sc.(Medical), College of Medical

    Sciences,Bharatpur (MD Pathology/M.Sc.(Medical) and Kathmandu Medical College (MD Pathology).

    In view of the shortage of the specialist medical manpower in the country as a whole and particularly in basic medicalsciences, Kathmandu University has started postgraduate medical and dental programs leading to MD/MS and MDS in

    association with Manipal Education and Medical Group of India (Bangalore, Mangalore and Manipal) from February

    2003.

    Since then KUSMS has also started MD/Ms programs in clinical subjects in affiliated colleges inside the country from

    February 2007.

    The school started 4 yrs. B.Sc. Human Biology Program in association with School of Science, from year 2005 August.

    Certificate level programs in General Medicine, Nursing, Laboratory Technology, Ophthalmology and Physiotherapy are

    also offered at Dhulikhel Medical Institute under the School of Medical Sciences from 1998.

    ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF SCHOOL

    The Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences is governed by the Health Sciences Executive Committee, which

    is its apex body. The Vice Chancellor is the Chairperson of the Executive Committee. Members of the Committee include

    Registrar, Dean, Associate Dean/Hospital Director (Constituent Program) and Chief Administrative Officer.

    The Dean/ Associate Dean is responsible for carrying out policy decisions taken by the Committee. The Faculty Board

    and Subject Committees is the focal body of the School in academic matters. Its main responsibility is to maintain the

    academic standard of the School. It recommends the standard and quality of teaching, curriculum, methods of evaluation,

    nature and types of examinations, and prescribes teaching materials.

    MBBS/BDS PROGRAM

    Admission to the MBBS/BDS course:

    To be eligible for selection to the MBBS/BDS program, a candidate should have:

    a. Completed 17 years of age, and

    b. Completed 10+2 years of education or Intermediate of Science (I.Sc.) or equivalent, with Biology, Chemistry,

    Physics and English as main subjects and he/she should have secured not less than 50% of marks in the subjects

    mentioned above put together and aggregate of 50% overall.

    orCompleted Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree recognized by the University with one of the following subjects

    viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary

    level and he/she should have scored not less than aggregate of 50% marks; provided that such candidate shall

    have passed the earlier qualifying examination (10+2, I. Sc. or an equivalent examination) with the subjects

    Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
