    INNOVATION ANDSTARTUP PROJECTSProject Cases

    Christian Doll

    worked at Siemens IT Solutions

and Services while he was joi-

    ning our EMBA program. His

idea was to develop a businessconcept for Siemens that aimed

    at engaging and managing ex-

    ternal service providers throughout customer

    project lifecycles.

We took advantage of the innovation processes

and tools recommended by our project advisors.

    Methods like mood-boards, storytelling, brain-

storming and especially the use of prototypes

as an integrated innovation approach worked

    extremely well together.

Most of the methods Christian applied were

new to Siemens, especially the 3D LEGO proto-

type, which helped him and his team to work out

and present the main ideas of the new business

concept. Prototypes of this kind are incredibly

effective in making abstract and virtual concepts

transparent and understandable to all the impor-

tant stakeholders. This approach allowed Chris-

tian to come up with a detailed model in only five

months using just half a man-year of a team of

eight employees. We generated several new

ideas and most of them were implemented by

three different department s withi n Siemens IT

    Solutions and Services.

    Catharina van Delden

is founder and CEO of innosabi.

    Innosabi uses Web 2.0 techno-

    logies to enable active coopera-

tion between companies andtheir customers in the early pha-

    ses of product development.

This is how new products and services can be

brought to market with a higher rate of success.

The learnings and tools from the Executive MBA

in Innovation and Business Creation have been

a major success factor in innosabis develop-

ment. The program helped me to make our

whole business concept way more scalable. We

developed our company from a consulting busi-

ness to a technology driven business.

Founded in December 2010, innosabi already

looks back on successful product and service

developments for companies like Coty Beauty,

Continental, Messe Mnchen and LIDL. In 2011,

it was named the best German ITC startup by

the German Ministry of Economics and Techno-

logy. By the end of 2013, innosabi launched two

new platforms to support B2B and B2C i nnova-

tion processes and is already working on the

    next projects.

Four years after her graduation, the EMBA pro-

gram is still influencing Catharinas work: The

connections I made have proven invaluable: I

still profit from the networks I formed and from

the frequent exchange with my fellow class-

    mates and other alumni.

    Jan Philipp Hinrichs

is founder and CEO of Captcha-

Ad. CaptchaAd is the first com-

    pany to combine enhanced

spam protection with interactivevideo advertising in order to in-

    crease website security, facili-

tate the users visit and ensure a more consciou s

perception of advertising by the user. Captcha-

Ad invented this kind of spam protection and

captcha advertising. The technology is patent

    pending.

I wanted to prepare CaptchaAd for the diverse

challenges that lie ahead and for continued

business development, while at the same time

developing myself on a personal level, says Jan

Philipp describing what he hoped the MBA

would help him achieve. The programs Busi-

ness Design approach supported him with its

structure and system while his project advisor

reflected with him on the different areas of the

CaptchaAd business model. They reflected on

the strategic development of CaptchaAd fo-

cused on important skills for the future, next

strategic steps and other issues. They also con-

sidered how the company might grow over the

coming years and what markets CaptchaAd

    could enter.

During his time at the Executive MBA program,

Jan Philipp gained seed funding for CaptchaAd,

also thanks to the communication strategies he

had developed in the numerous Unternehmer-

TUM workshops and courses on pitching. Lively

discussions and exchanges with other students,

    business founders and entrepreneurs really

helped me evaluate and implement some im-

    portant strategic decisions, he says.

    Individual Innovation and Startup Advisory

Every innovation and startup project is different

and needs individual support. During the project

work you will be paired with a project advisor,

who will be your first point of contact for ques-

tions about your individual innovation or startupproject. All project advisors are experienced ex-

perts from UnternehmerTUM the Center for

Innovation and Business Creation at TUM. They

have wide-ranging experience in building up

young companies as well as market expertise

and additional skills in strategy, finance, product

and service development, marketing, sales and

HR. The project advisors have worked on inno-

vation projects with a large network of industry

    partners (including many DAX-listed corpora-

tions) for a number of years.

    The Project Advisors will

Guide the students through their innovation

    and startup projects

Support the students in developing the pro-

ject roadmap and managi ng the project

    Denise Schuster

    Class of 2013

Before the EMBA program I led

    a medium sized company as

CEO for six years and parallel

started an own company but I didnt have avision or a plan how to build up a real startup.

This knowledge, brought to me by great profes-

sors with great experience combined with the

spirit of the UC Berkeley and Silicon Valley

startups, created a totally new way of thinking

to me. In the class I found amazing people who

also had that spirit and we had the chance to

found our own startup UnserParkplatz.de. I am

very proud and happy that I had the opportuni-

ty to be part of the EMBA Class of 2013 to fur-

ther develop myself and a company.

    Dieter Klose

    Class of 2013

Years ago, I joined an innovative

    agile US-based startup that

grew fast and became one of

the worlds top three network companies. I left

this company to build my own startup or to lead

innovation in an exciting startup. During this pro-

cess of change, I enrolled for the EMBA in Inno-

vation and Business Creation to complement

my practical experiences with theoretical know-

ledge and enlarge my entrepreneurial network.

Inspired by the EMBA program, I made contact

with a Munich based startup called MYBEST-

BRANDS. Finally, I was offered the leadership

role and became CEO of MYBESTBRANDS in

January 2013. Looking back, the Executive

MBA played a major role within my pivotal chan-

    ge process.

    Shannon Layland

    Class of 2014

The TUM EMBA program is an

    ideal innovation laboratory to suc-

    cessfully envision, design, plan

and execute an entrepreneurial idea in theoryand practice. The world class professors teach

the latest in economic and leadership theory in

an international context. My classmates and the

alumni network are an accessible and reliable

foundation for my current startup venture. For

me, the program was the perfect choice.

    Aylin Koca Gleir

    Class of 2014

I chose to attend this EMBA

    program after deciding to co-

    found my high-tech startup in

Munich and before I moved here from the Ne-

therlands. This turned out to be the perfect ti-

ming: The program provided me with practical

    insights into entrepreneurial management, the

relevant network, links and entry points to the

German market while also letting me experience

the best of Silicon Valley within a great team of

fellow MBAs and benefiting from an endless

source of support from the program organizers

in everything I did. Especially enjoyable for me

was the diversity in the class, the well-seasoned

professionals involved and how this helped im-

mediately form an invaluable and accountable

    network. Highly recommended!
