Summer internship and Major Research Project
Students will be required to register for a summer internship for a period of 8
weeks in an external organiza tion. Most importantly, the Major Research Project
in Semester 4 would be a core requirement earning 20 credits. Detailed project
guidelines would be available to the students for meeting course requirements for
the summer internship and major research projects.
These projects, carried out with the student housed in the host organization, willprovide the students with a forum to focus on sustainable development challenges
in industry and civil society, and participate in the analysis and the problem solving
process. Each internship period will culminate in a cross-disciplinary seminar where
the students will be evaluated on their problem solving ability along with learning
from the exercise regarding cross-disciplinary linkages, the importance of context
in defining sustainable development challenges, and key management issues.
Pedagogical to ols
The choice of pedagogical tools will be based on the principle of active learning based
on strong conceptual understanding. These would comprise classroom lectures, case
studies, field visits, term papers, assignments and tutorials, a large number of guest
lectures by practitioners and experts, seminars and discussion forums, and role play.
In particular, case studies, drawing from real-world sustainability and management
challenges, will be designed and integrated into the curriculum. The faculty, along with
professionals and development organizations will be encouraged to collaborate in
the preparation of case studies. These case studies, along with the field exposure
planned during the Summer Internship and the Major Research Project, would
provide relevant context to the curriculum in this programme.
Graduation requirements
As the MBA (Business Sustainability) programme has a large component of research,
each student will have to earn a minimum CGPA (cumulative grade point average) of 6.

Recent developments worldwide
have clearly demonstrated that
not only do business leaders
and managers need to acquire
new knowledge but also a totally
different set of values. The
impact of business on society
and the environment need to be
integrated with normal business
decisions. The MBA programme
on business sustainability being
launched by TERI is a distinctly
different programme of education
which would not only give
graduates knowledge on the
conventional tools and techniques
of management but also a
much larger view of business
operations as they relate to social
responsibilities and environmentalprotection. It would also equip
them with understanding of
how environmental damage and
climate change can adversely
affect business operations. This
programme is clearly the first
of its kind in the world just as
the TERI University has been a
unique innovator as an institution
of higher learning

Introduction
Management education is deep rooted in India with a largenumber of universities offering MBA degrees. The MBA(Business Sustainability) programme at TERI University
brings together this knowledge capital in a set of courses thatcover all traditional business administration disciplines such asmarketing, finance, and strategy.
In addition, as the growth story in the developing worldunfolds in these tumultuous times, both industrial and non-industrial actors are being challenged to take on new roles inmodern society. While industry, given its repository of leadershipcapital, is being called upon to play a much larger role in societaldevelopment, governments and civil society organizations arebeing encouraged to work efficiently to achieve social objectives. For industry, now more than ever, there will be persistentdemand for sustainable and ethical practices, and accountability toconsumers and the public at large. For governments, the challengeis of meeting development goals, while addressing environmentaldegradation. These challenges have increased the demand for newskills and the need to internalize, within the current managementeducation framework, a high level of social consciousness andethical behaviour.
Apart from creating a fresh cadre of managers who internalizesuch sustainability concerns in their professional careers, it isimperative that the existing leadership reorients itself, from beingdriven primarily by the tr aditional objectives of maximizing profitsand cost competitiveness to being more responsive to consumerneeds, societal pressures and environmental imperatives, fosteringvalue-added relationships with stakeholders, and dealing withpublic-private partnerships. Moreover, these leaders would needto work in progressively more diverse and multi-cultural contextsrequiring a very different vision.
The MBA (Business Sustainability), intended for both freshgraduates and mid-career professionals, is an effort to alignleadership in both industry and government to current contexts. In doing so, this program will enhance the scope and knowledgebody of management education in India by catering not only fordeveloping new skills but also to developing new perspectivesrelated to the integration of sustainable and ethical practices intomanagement education.
This is not just an MBA programme; its an MBA+ programme, which leverages TERIs knowledge capital in sustainabledevelopment to deepen the social and ethical consciousness ofmanagement education in India. The graduates of this programmewill become competent business leaders with a holistic and long-term perspective for a world that demands new skills & attitude.
