Foundation
In celebration of Maynard’s centennial birthday
next July, the Maynard Lundberg Foundation has
increased the scholarship amount to $4,000, paid
in four equal installments, based upon minimum
grade point accumulative eligibility of 3.0.
We are excited to bring the Maynard Lundberg
Scholarship Award to a level commensurate with
Maynard’s rich tradition in this community.
Through this scholarship, we hope to keep
Maynard’s vibrant spirit alive for future
generations.
ABOUT MAYNARD LUNDBERG
Maynard was born in July, 1904 near Hinckley, Minnesota. The Lundberg family moved to Port
Orchard in 1908 and built their family home on Mitchell road. Maynard attended school through the
eighth grade in Port Orchard. He attended his first two years of high school in Bremerton via the foot
ferry and in the fall of 1921, Maynard entered a brand new South Kitsap Junior/Senior High as a
junior.
Maynard played on South Kitsap's first football, basketball, and baseball teams and graduated
in 1923 in its second graduating class. In the fall of 1927 he enrolled at Washington State University
and graduated five years later with a degree in education. Maynard became a teacher, head football
and baseball coach at South Kitsap in 1933 and his popularity grew as a fiery and competitive coach.
In 1940 he became District Athletic Director and later was named Vice Principal of Marcus Whitman
Junior High until he retired in 1971. In retirement Maynard became South Kitsap’s and Port Orchard’s
biggest booster.
In 1995 over 1,200 Port Orchard citizens representing four generations packed the South Kitsap
gymnasium for his memorial service which was a testament to the many lives he touched. “To this
day, the football team still saves a seat on every away game bus ride for Maynard. That is our way of
acknowledging the example he set and what he meant to this school,” stated DJ Sigurdson, head
football coach, South Kitsap High School.

His love for the community was infectious!
It seemed whenever there was a need for a little more school spirit....
Maynard was always there to lend his support!
Even into his 90’s he
was a coach and
mentor…
…to some of the
greatest coaches
South Kitsap has
ever had.

Norman Vincent Peale, a clergyman and writer, once said,
“You only lose energy when life becomes dull in your mind.
You don’t have to be tired and bored. Get interested in
something. Get absolutely enthralled in something. Throw
yourself into it with abandon.” Maynard Lundberg never lived
a dull moment. South Kitsap was his “something.”
“Not only was I blessed to receive the Maynard Lundberg
Scholarship, it made me realize the significance of “SK
Pride” – spirit, dedication and a determination to
make school and community a better place. The talented
recipients before me have set high standards. I try every day
to be worthy of this great honor”

T Wolves owe many of their wins to the love, dedication of coaches like Fisher, 'Mr. South Kitsap.'
By JOSH MORTON SJ><>rl$ Ed#qr .
While valid arguments are made about who the greatest athletes were to come out of South Kitsap, there is no dispute who owns the title of "Mr. Soutl1 Kitsap".
That unoflicial Iitle belongs to Maynard ''Swede" Lundberg.
From the time he was a spitfire for the South Kitsap (Union) High School's first football team in 1921through his joy insee ing t11c SK footbaD team win its first state championship in 1994, Lundberg epito mized sports in Port Orchard. '!11elate player, coach, teacher, fatherand
proudest supporter of youth athletics inlilled all the values that are good in sports.
it to his 90th year, Lundberg never missed an SK football game.
Eric Canton, a fonner three-sport star at SouU1 Kitsap in the mid-1980s, said l..undberg had a profound effect on every
football player who had the opportunity to know him.
When legendary football coach Ed Fisher came on board in the late 1970s, Canton said Fisher made sure every player got to know Lundberg.
'That man was unbelievable," Canton 'said. "Ed forced us to recognize Maynard and appreciate him. Football was his love." . Canton said it didn't take any effort to love the man.
"Maybe he didn't coach the most suc ·cessrultemns, but he always had an incred -ible way of,staying.positi·anton said: :"He never.said a bad word about anybody.''
Dr. Bill Bloomquist, a star athlete at ·South Kitsap in the 1950s, corrunented two ,years ago how Lundberg shaped kids'lives.
''VI· Cn many of the kids' dads were in the war, and when they came back to work :one and two jobs, Maynard took a lot of kids l.Ulder his ann," Bloomquist said. "He's the one that taught us how to put our socks on, 'how to put a jock on, how to tuck in your 'pants."
Bloomquist said Ltmdberg wasn't histor ically known as a successful coach record 'wise, but he was a coach who was much 'loved.
"He was their mascot, buddy, father, _ adopted tmcle," Bloomquist said. "He was a
disciplinarian, but he was fair and gave :everybody a chance."
South Kitsap Head Football Coach
Ed Fisher 1974-1996
