RECORD BOOKS: One of the basic requirements of 4-H is to complete a record book for each

project. Whether your project is sportfishing or market swine, we hope you will learn the importance

of keeping accurate records. For some projects, you may be keeping a record of the activities and

practice sessions you’ve had while completing the project. You may also be asked to track all income

and expenses. For livestock projects, you will be asked to record all health treatments for your

animals. Remember different counties require different books and all counties have different

deadlines. So check with your local Extension Office to make sure that you are meeting the

requirements.

INTERVIEW JUDGING: For all your general or family/consumer science projects (check with your

local Extension Office for official guidelines), you will be required to participate in Interview Judging

prior to or during your county fair. You will be notified by your local Extension

Office of the time and date you will need to interview. On that date, you will

bring your completed project and/or project display board along with your record

book to be judged. A project judge will sit with you and ask a few questions

about your project while they judge your work.

Congratulations Graduating Seniors!

Lauren Bergner- Holyoke High School

Janessa Lutze- Holyoke High School

Kassidy Porter- Holyoke High School

A Special Congratulations

Brooklyn Plumb, daughter of Jeff and Kindra

Plumb, was elected president for the District One 4-

H on April 13, 2020. In this position, she also

becomes a State Officer. Brooklyn is a sophomore at

Haxtun High School and is active in 4-H and FFA.

She shows market hogs, market steers and breeding

heifers while also doing leathercraft. Brooklyn says

that she wants to be able to help kids develop their

leadership skills and become the best person they

can be through 4-H. She is very excited to meet new

people across the state and looks forward to planning

conferences as a State Officer. By meeting new

people and forming good relationships with them,

Brooklyn hopes to further develop her own

leadership skills by learning from others.

Congratulations Brooke!

Cow Patty Bingo Fundraiser

The Phillips County 4-H Council will once again be

doing Cow Patty Bingo for a fundraiser. Please see

your club leader if you haven’t received your tickets

to sell yet. Tickets are $5 for one or $20 for five.

Money and ticket stubs are due to the Extension

Office by July 1. Your leader will probably have

an earlier club deadline. All tickets you receive

must be sold. If you are having trouble selling your

tickets, talk to your club leader soon – don’t wait!

Your club leader may know of another club member

who may be able to help you sell some tickets.

Clubs will receive $.50 per ticket turned in by July

1. If the tickets and money are not received by July

1, the club will forfeit the $.50 incentive. The bingo

contest will occur Saturday after the parade at the

fairgrounds. The winner will receive $500, with

$150 in consolation money. Remember, this is the

only fundraiser the Council does each year. The

money raised is helping to assist you as a 4-H

member with different 4-H activities. If you have

any questions, please contact Jessie at the Extension

Office. Happy selling! ☺

Cloverbud Camps

Calling all Cloverbuds! You are invited to join us for

a cloverbud camp taking place in June! This year

they will be held at the Paoli Event Hall. The kids

will be making a steppingstone that will be exhibited

at fair. These can last for years and are also a great

addition to any garden or flowerbed. There also will

be snacks and games as well! We hope to see you all

there!

Record Book and Project Requirements

It’s not too early to start thinking about your

project’s requirements and record books! Electronic

record books for all projects are available online.

Go to: http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/ for

your livestock and general project record books. If

you are enrolled in a general project, it is a very

good idea to read through the State Fair Exhibit

Requirements for your project; these are the

requirements you will be judged on in Phillips

County. To find your project requirements, go to:

http://co4h.colostate.edu/statefair/StateFairExhibitRe

q.pdf.

Display Boards and Record Book Covers

The Extension Office has display boards (show

boards) and green record book covers available for

$3 each.

Livestock Nutrition Clinics

Mark your calendars for the first and second

Mondays and Wednesdays of May! Colby Hales, a

graduate student at UW and an ag teacher in

Pinedale, Wyoming will be presenting on Livestock

Nutrition. The first week will cover monogastric

nutrition so it will be very pertinent to swine

exhibitors. There will be a beginner’s session held

on Monday, May 4 and a more advanced session on

Wednesday, May 6. The following week will cover

ruminant nutrition so exhibitors with sheep, goats

and cattle will want to tune in. The format will be

the same as the week before with a beginner’s

session on Monday, May 11 and a more advanced

session on Wednesday, May 13. This is a great

opportunity for youth and parents to learn more

about livestock nutrition. The registration link for

the Zoom sessions will be on the Facebook Page.

Also watch your emails for information from Jessie.

Horse Practices

Watch your email inboxes and mail boxes for

information about when the classroom sessions and ride

nights start for horse practice. They will be starting

soon!

Colorado 4-H Foundation Raffle

Once again, the Colorado 4-H Foundation will raffle

off a 2020 Ford XLT F-150 super crew pickup, in

addition to other cash prizes. The tickets are one

ticket for $5 or five tickets for $20. Remember,

40% of the ticket sales in Phillips County will

come back to the Phillips County 4-H Council, or

to your club if your club chooses to sell tickets. If

you or your club is interested in selling tickets, or

would like to purchase tickets, please contact the

Extension Office.

COVID-19 Update

Per current CSU restrictions there will be no face to face programing until May 15th. Hopefully as we draw closer to that

date we will have more clarification on how we are able to proceed. As of now Sedgwick County Fair is as scheduled.

You will be updated as soon as I know more, thank you for your patience.

Cloverbud Members

A cloverbud refers to our youngest 4-H members who are

ages 5-7. Cloverbuds do not enroll in a project; instead, they

focus on learning more about 4-H. Cloverbud members

complete a cloverbud record book. If they choose, they can

participate in our interview judging prior to fair. At that time,

they will turn in their record book and present a “judge” with a

poster they’ve made to be displayed during fair.

We encourage cloverbud members to participate in club

meetings and seek out activities that are age appropriate. We

typically offer a handful of activities over the summer, so stay

tuned for more information.

Council Update The county council met Monday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. in a

virtual meeting. A carnival and raffle report was given. The

carnival has been cancelled for now. We will look at fall

options but it may not be rescheduled until next spring. The

raffle has been postponed and the new date for the drawing in

July 31, 2020 at 6:00 p.m.

Tate Schrock, Maranda Mason, Jared Mason, and Montana

Mason reported on a recent District 1 virtual meeting. The

district held officer elections.

Jamie updated everyone regarding continuing COVID

restrictions. She reported that state conference and CWF have

been cancelled for this year.

The talent show was discussed and will be tentatively

planned for July 21. If restrictions continue with face to face

programming, the council will look at virtual options for the

event.

The project add/drop date was discussed. Typically that

deadline is May 1st. Everyone in attendance felt the deadline

should be pushed back this year due to continued restrictions on

club and project meetings. The deadline has been moved to

June 1st.

The next council meeting will be held June 15 at 7:00 p.m.

Election of officers will take place in June.

Raffle Update Our annual raffle was officially postponed until Friday,

July 31st at 6:00 p.m. Please feel free to mail in any sold

tickets/money to our office at 181 Birch Ave, Akron CO

80720. If you have unsold tickets, we will need to update the

date and time of the drawing. The office will be sending out

labels that you can use to cover that information on your

tickets. It is our hope that you can continue to sell your tickets

into the summer months.

General and FCS Projects

As you have time between school work and chores, please

keep working on your 4-H projects and records. If you have

questions or need help, please contact your leader or the

Extension office. Call or email or message us with your

questions. We are working with the fair board to plan for the

fair. We are expecting to have 4-H members eager to bring

their completed projects for judging and public display at the

fair!! Make some decisions this month about what you can get

General & Home Ec Achievement Award

Last year Yuma County was privileged to have an

anonymous donor provide $200 cash award to Logan

Klein and Maddie Lapp. The award is based on

outstanding achievement related not only to their projects,

but to their 4-H involvement as a whole. The General and

Home Economics Achievement award will be given again

this year and is determined by what is recorded in your

record books. Be sure to keep good records so you are

eligible for this award! Keep track of all the activities you

do, committees you serve on, the help you give another

member or sibling with a 4-H activity, community service,

etc. Look for more tips on filling out your record book in

the Fair Newsletter issue.

Congratulations to:

Washington Focus Delegate, Shyanne Conde. She was

selected to represent Yuma County at the 2020 Citizenship

Washington Focus in June.

Horse Ride Nights

Beginning in June, Horse Ride Nights will be held at the

home of Ray Hendrix and Ryan Noble. Ray Hendrix’s

Friday night ride will be on May 29 and begin with a

potluck BBQ. Please bring your horse and a side dish.

Ryan Noble’s rides will begin in June so be looking for

more information on that.

Accidental Insurance Sponsors

Wray State Bank is again sponsoring accidental

insurance for all members and leaders of Yuma County.

It would be great if you would drop them a note of

thanks for their continued support of Yuma County 4-H.

They would really appreciate hearing from you, or if you

are in the bank tell them thanks!
