As one era ends another begins

As one era ends another begins and so it is with the Milton Chamber of Commerce For the past few weeks I know all of us have been saying our good-byes to Sandy Martin There are not enough accolades and adjectives to describe what she has done for the Chamber and for the Town of Milton over the past 23 years But all things must change and so we look forward to our new Executive Director Mario De Divitiis stepping into the position on May 9th

Mario may be a stranger to you now but I guarantee you it wonrsquot stay that way for long His outgoing manner and friendly disposition will capture your attention and you will be swept up by his energy and enthusiasm His education is rich in public administration business government relations and public policy and his work experience is equally as impressive Mario has held a directorrsquos position on the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce and has been extremely active within his community He has been greatly involved with Brock University and hopefully he will be able to draw upon this experience to assist our Townrsquos continuing endeavours

to bring a Wilfrid Laurier campus to the Milton Education Village

And donrsquot be fooled by Mariorsquos age Mario started working in his family business at a very young age so he has grown up in an entrepreneurial environment He understands small and large businesses their needs and how to help them grow to their full potential This knowledge translates directly into the ldquolanguagerdquo of the Chamber and the businesses that make up our over 750 members

I know that you will join me in welcoming Mario into our Milton community We are not only the fastest growing town in the country but one of the friendliest Please be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to meet Mario and share a coffee with him (especially an expresso) There will be plenty of chances at the Chamber offices to meet but why not join in Miltonrsquos Great Race or our Annual Golf Tournament and get to know not only Mario but all the other business owners that make up our Chamber of Commerce

Milton Chamber announces incoming Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the Milton Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that after an extensive search they have selected a new Executive Director for the Milton Chamber of Commerce

Mario De Divitiis will be starting his new role as the Executive Director of the Chamber on May 9 2016

ldquoThe Board is very impressed with Mariorsquos business and political acumen natural relationship building and communications skills His energy and community mindedness is clear and his vision for the Milton Chamber of Commerce is exciting We are confident that he will take the Chamber to new levels and continue to execute the organizationrsquos mission vision and valuesrdquo said Teresa Fujarczuk President Milton Chamber of Commerce

Mario brings a dynamic and cross sectorial background to Milton having worked in both the public and nonprofit sector and having being born and raised in an entrepreneurial household Most recently Mario served as the Executive Director of Leadership Niagara a community leadership development program In addition since 2013 Mario has served as an Adjunct Professor at Niagara Collegersquos School of Management teaching courses in Management and Corporate Ethics Prior to this Mario oversaw engagement efforts for Niagara Regionrsquos Integrated Community Planning department where he worked with all levels of government in order to advance the interest of various department programs and projects

Mario currently sits on the Board of Trustees at Brock University and the Governance Committee at Niagara

Health System Prior to this appointment he served on the board of the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce and was past Chair of NextNiagara Council In 2011 Mario was a recipient of Niagararsquos 40 under 40 business achievement awards and in 2014 was awarded the PenFinancial Credit Union amp Business Education Council of Niagara Community Partners Award Mario is a proud Brock University graduate and holds both a bachelorrsquos degree in Political Science and a Masterrsquos degree in Public Administration

Ontariorsquos Skills Gap Widens by 9The Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC)

released the report Passport to Prosperity Ontariorsquos Priorities for Immigration Reform which presents a series of recommendations designed to reduce Ontariorsquos costly skills gap and improve the labour outcomes of immigrants in the province

According to a 2016 OCC membership survey the skills gap in Ontario is worsening In fact the survey found that 39 percent of employers experienced difficulty filling a job opening over the last 12 to 18 months because they could not find someone with the right qualifications This represents a 9 percent increase from survey data on the same question first reported by the OCC in 2014

ldquoAddressing the skills gap has been a key priority of our membership over the past five yearsrdquo said Allan OrsquoDette President and CEO of the OCC ldquoWe recognize that there is a golden opportunity for employers and government to work together to ensure that our provincersquos employers have access to the best and the brightest talent in the world and similarly that new market entrants in Ontario have access to opportunities that align with their unique skillsetsrdquo

At the same time the evidence suggests that Ontario can do a better job of leveraging the skills and global connections of new Ontarians Immigrants to Ontario experience poor labour market outcomes relative to their Canadian-born peers Only 57 percent of recently arrived post-secondary educated

immigrants to Ontario are actually working in high-skill jobs In comparison 77 percent of people born in Canada with post-secondary education are working in high-skill jobs

ldquoCanada is home to some of the most talented people in the world Our diversity is one of our greatest competitive advantages This is especially the case in Ontario as we have the highest newcomer population in the countryrdquo said Karl Baldauf Vice President Policy and Government Relations at the OCC ldquoOntario possesses an unlimited amount of innovative potential and if our talent pool is engaged effectively we can lead the world in employment and economic growthrdquo

To improve the labour market outcomes of immigrants and to ensure that Ontario businesses are able to effectively leverage the talents and global connections of its workforce the OCC recommends that the Government of Canada take action in accordance to the following three priority areas

1 Address barriers to opportunity within the selection system

2 Prioritize the attraction and retention of international students and

3 Improve the coordination of labour market integration and settlement services

4 The OCC will continue to engage the provincial and federal governments on behalf of the Ontario business community to ensure the future prosperity of our population

MILTON CHAMBER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Scholarship applications now being accepted

Calling all high school students or parents of high school students looking to attend university or college next year The Milton Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for its 2016 Chamber Scholarship Program and application forms are now being accepted

Since 1990 the Milton Chamber of Commerce has offered $1000 scholarships ndash one for a student from each Milton high school including EC Drury for the Deaf one for a high school student registered in an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and one for a child of a Chamber member

Application forms can be downloaded from the Chamber website at wwwmiltonchamber ca and the Milton Farmersrsquo Market website at www miltonfarmersmarketca

The Chamber funds this program

through the Scholarship Cafeacute at the Milton Farmersrsquo Market and through the Annual Sports Celebrity Dinner amp Auction Proceeds from these initiatives allow the Chamber to ensure an ongoing endowment fund for advancing post-secondary education in our community which has now reached over $300000

The Milton Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the local high school guidance departments the Region of Halton Halton District School Board Halton Catholic District School Board Halton Industry Education Council members of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program initiative and the Chamber Selection Committee for their assistance in this program The deadline for submission is June 10 2016
